Quite possibly the most iconic cartridge in the United States, the .45 Colt was developed by gunmaker Samuel Colt as a black powder cartridge in 1872, for the Colt Single Action Army (aka the Peacemaker) revolver. This cartridge features a .454-inch bullet inside a rimmed, straight-walled case that measures 1.285 inches in length. Commonly called the .45 Long Colt (LC), the overall length of the round is 1.6 inches. It features a large pistol primer and is pressurized to 14,000 pounds per square inch (psi).

Revolvers are considered antiquated technology by many, but they remain alive and well for good reason. Revolvers maintain a simplicity of operation that is beneficial for many, and they prove resilient in terms of withstanding neglect. For concealed carry in alternate modes such as pocket or ankle, revolvers offer a high level of reliability. For the individual who wants to keep a handgun at the ready in the home but is not a shooting enthusiast, medium-frame revolvers make good sense as they hold up well to sitting, neglected, in a drawer. With that said, what are the best revolvers on the market for home defense and carry?

Indiana's own Eugene Morrison Stoner cut his teeth in small arms as a Marine Corps armorer in World War II and left the world some of the most iconic black rifles in history. Born on Nov. 22, 1922, in the small town of Gosport, just outside of Bloomington, Indiana, Stoner moved to California with his parents and graduated from high school in Long Beach. After a short term with an aircraft company in the area that later became part of Lockheed, the young man enlisted in the Marines and served in the South Pacific in the Corps' aviation branch, fixing, and maintaining machine guns in squadrons forward deployed as far as China.

One of the most interesting lawmen of the early 20th century was Texas Ranger Charles E. Charlie Miller. Miller first joined the Rangers in 1919 and served as a Texas Ranger or Special Texas Ranger until 1968, with the exception of a few years when he served as a Federal Prohibition officer. Miller was also a particular favorite of Captain Frank Hamer, who knew he could count on Miller to get the job doneno matter what it might be. I was told that Miller had survived about seven or eight gunfights.

First, determine what kind of storage situation you are dealing with. We like to break it down into two easy categories: long-term storage and ready storage.

The solid copper hollow point bullet (SCHP) can be used in both rifle and pistol ammunition. All-copper pistol bullets have the familiar large hollow opening at the end, but rifle versions have a wider range of options. The different types of rifle ammo are for different sized game, and the hollow point in copper can expand in a variety of useful ways, depending on the intended target. A deer-hunting ammo, for example, will be much different than a varmint ammo.

Solid copper hollow points can be used in most places that have gone lead-free, including ranges and hunting areas. There are several manufacturers of SCHP bullets, with Magtech and Barnes being the most well known.

When the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen (2022), it affirmed that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to carry a firearm outside the home for self-defense.

Now, in an ironicand arguably unconstitutionalmove, leaders of the Maryland county where three of the high-court justices live voted to ban the carry of firearms pretty much everywhere in the county.

Maybe its a sign of how little influence President Joe Biden has, maybe it indicates growing fear of crime, but American support for more gun control has taken a huge hit over the past five months. On the day after Biden repeated his demand for an assault weapons ban following a shooting at a Colorado gay club, Gallup today revealed that support for stricter gun laws has dropped nine-points to what is now a diminished majority.

If youre a Keystone State hunter, its hard not to get excited about Thanksgiving weekend. Thats because not only do you have the opportunity to spend time with family and friends for the holiday, it also marks the kickoff to the states most popular hunting season, the firearms deer season. And this year, hunters have much to be enthusiastic about, with decent-to-excellent deer numbers in most areas of the state, plus plenty of quality bucks likely running around as well.
