U.S. financial firms and law-enforcement agencies are considering an agreement to give "authorities" sweeping power to trace terrorists...

Under the plan, law-enforcement would check groups and individuals with "suspected or known connections to terror networks"; Records would be sent to the government automatically if matches were found.

The agreement would first cover banks, but would probably extend to brokerage houses, mortgage lenders, insurance firms and wire-transfer companies.

The National Park Service is moving ahead with its prejudicial plan to ban all predator hunting in California's East Mojave National Preserve.

In spite of a huge outcry from hunters throughout the region and from detailed comments provided by the Department of Fish and Game explaining how the NPS staff was operating outside state and federal agency recommendations, the land management plan for the National Preserve was signed by the regional director and preserve staff.

Wynn believes the CIA attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon to justify passage of new laws that take away constitutional rights.

Wynn speaks gently but writes aggressively ... about the threat to civil liberties since Sept. 11. The survival preparedness group eschews violence and once rejected as a member a man who wanted to blow up Buford Dam.

The number of licenses in South Hampton Roads issued for carrying hidden guns surged after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks prompted a nationwide concern over personal safety. Vin Suprynowicz: ask why "paragraph A" of the legal code citation is always deleted from the "authorizing" fine print on the back of the IRS' standard "seize-his-paycheck" Form 668W. The reason the citation instead starts with "paragraph B" is that paragraph A specifies that said law authorizes the use of such onerous methods only against employees of the federal government...

"If the events of the last few weeks are any guide, then of course there is no Constitution. This should hardly come as a surprise to those high-minded liberals who have been hawking the virtues of a flexible, plastic, evolving Constitution for many decades. Yet, some of them, out of sheer sentimentality as regards the First Amendment, would now draw back from the militarist abyss lately reopened by the current administration in the name of Homeland Security." "His anti-terrorism law, the USA Patriot Act, has already torn holes into that document by radically expanding electronic surveillance and secret physical searches of homes and offices. Too few of these expanded powers are subject to adequate judicial review. Now...he has directly attacked the Sixth Amendment's right to effective counsel." Nat Hentoff

SHAWNEE, OK -- Deputy Johnny Austin represents safety and security at the Pottawatomie County Courthouse.

"My main purpose for being here is just to calm any disturbances both inside and outside the courtroom, and to reassure some of the folks working here at the courthouse," Austin said.

...he already has begun thinking about ways to beef up security. Topping that list is a metal detector that could help prevent people from carrying concealed weapons...

"Bellesiles does not correct any of the serious, carefully documented criticisms of scholars who have taken the time to review his sources. ...

"These criticisms have convinced me that Bellesiles misread, misused, and perhaps even fabricated some of his evidence. I no longer believe that his evidence proves his thesis. ... Some of the most significant statements in Arming America are "based" on data that do not exist." --Melissa Seckora
