In the grand narrative of World War II, the Battle of Bryansk is a minor conflict, barely deserving of a footnote. But Bryansk has another place in history. It was there that a then-unknown tank commander named Mikhail Kalashnikov decided that his Russian comrades would never again be defeated. In the years following the Great Patriotic War, as Soviet propagandists dubbed it, he was to conceive and fabricate a weapon so simple, and yet so revolutionary, that it would change the way wars were fought and won. It was the AK-47 assault rifle. |

Police opened fire early Saturday on a car full of men driving away from a bachelor party at a strip club, killing the groom on his wedding day in a shooting that drew a furious outcry from family members but little immediate explanation from police.
The shooting, which also left two other men hospitalized, drew angry protests from family members and the Rev. Al Sharpton. The New York Police Department's chief spokesman, Paul Browne, declined to comment.
Sharpton said family members told him that there were no guns in the young men's car and "there was no reason for the police to shoot."

Veteran U.S. Rep. Howard Coble is trying to make gun regulators more effective, but critics say he's actually shooting holes in the law governing firearm dealers. A bill he introduced earlier this year would give federal investigators new power to fine or suspend dealers who break rules designed to keep pistols, rifles and shotguns out of the wrong hands. |

The National Rifle Association recently announced the promotion of Mike Krei to director of its Competitive Shooting Division. Krei is replacing Col. M.S. Gilchrist, who retired recently after leading the division since the early '90s. Krei will oversee a team of 23 staff in managing more than 10,300 NRA-sanctioned tournaments and almost 40 national shooting championships, according to a news release. Hundreds of thousands of gun owners take part in these competitions nationwide, from the novice to the world-class competitor, the release stated. |

Only recently has the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments been incoporated into our federal constitution and STILL the 2nd amendment (the right to bear arms) has not been incorporated. Meaning that if a state were to pass legislature that prohibited fire-arm ownership, then that law would be valid until it reached the Supreme Court and the Courts inevitably rule in favor of gun ownership. |

As the final election tallies come in, with only a few House races still yet to be determined, and the 2008 presidential race begun, a few things are clear: The 2006 midterm elections were a referendum on Iraq and the Republican leadership of Congress. It was a “thumping,” as the President acknowledged. But what they were not, as some on the far left would have you believe, was a mandate for more gun control. |

Regarding the column on Nov. 12 by Carmen Caldwell, A gun-free home can keep your family safer, and the follow up on Nov. 19, Prevent holiday-season crime at your business:
Ms. Caldwell mentioned in those columns how in her past 26 years of crime prevention in Miami-Dade she has not seen anything 'good' about owning a gun. In 1992, The Miami Herald itself reported on many gun owners protecting their homes during times of instability after Hurricane Andrew and, more recently, in the Hurricane Katrina lootings in New Orleans. Those without guns in their [homes] were at a great, unsafe disadvantage, no matter how strong their local Citizens' Crime Watch group was. |

As a card-carrying member of the Democratic Party of Lane County, I enjoyed Michael Moore's "A liberal pledge" (Register-Guard, Nov. 22). He had some good tongue-in-cheek thoughts on how disheartened conservatives can rest assured that the new government will not harm them. However, I take exception to Moore's flippant comments regarding our Second Amendment right:
"We will not take away your hunting guns. If you need an automatic weapon or a handgun to kill a bird or a deer, then you really aren't much of a hunter and you should, perhaps, take up another sport. In the meantime, we will arm the deer to make it a fairer fight." |

THE American People signed a contract. An agreement between the Governed and the Government. It is called the Constitution of the United States. The first ten amendments to that constitution are known as the Bill of Rights. As Justice Hugo Black stated, "It is my belief that there are absolutes in our Bill of Rights, and that they were put there on purpose by men who knew what words meant and meant their prohibitions to be 'absolutes.'" |

In yet another anti-gun rant, the Times has once again sounded the good liberal mantra: Got a problem? Throw money at it.
Apparently, outgoing Senator George Allen (R, Vir.) has introduced one of his last bills in the waning days of the 109th sitting of the Senate, a bill allowing concealed carry of firearms inside our National Parks. |

"...The end or design of government is, or ought to be, the safety, peace, and welfare of the governed. Unwise, therefore, and absurd in the highest degree, would be the conduct of that people, who, in forming a government, should give to their rulers power to destroy them and their property, and thereby defeat the very purpose of their institutions; or, in other words, should give unlimited power to their rulers, and not retain in their own hands the means of their own preservation.
"...In this Constitution, sir, we have departed widely from the principles and political faith of '76, when the spirit of liberty ran high, and danger put a curb on ambition. Here we find no security for the rights of individuals..." |

Jason Gunderson believes he is a responsible gun owner who enjoys practicing his marksmanship on the 40-acre property where he lives with his family. But his neighbor, Don Beesley, fears even a responsible marksman can make a mistake. The pair represent two sides of an ongoing township debate, pitting the rights of gun owners against the safety of their neighbors. The result could be a townshipwide ban on firearm discharges. |

It's deer season in Maine and although the hunting department of outdoor retail specialist L.L. Bean is packed, this is no old-boy's club.
Among the aisles of aerosol deer urine and digital duck calls, there are racks of women's clothing in mossy-oak camouflage, as well as plenty of fluorescent hunter orange.
Lined up behind the counter are dozens of guns, many available with a "short-stock" designed to fit more comfortably into women's shorter arms. |

Mayor Byron W. Brown, Buffalo Police Commissioner H. McCarthy Gipson and Erie County District Attorney Frank J. Clark sent out a warning to criminals this week that the city will be making the most of a tough new gun law that took effect Nov. 1. The law raises the minimum mandatory sentence for possession of a loaded illegal weapon to 3 1/2 years behind bars. Those convicted could receive up to 15 years in prison. |

Oswego County will conduct a gun amnesty program during the month of December that will allow county residents to register their unregistered pistols without penalty. The program is a joint effort by the Oswego County Clerk's office, Oswego County Sheriff's office, and the office of County Court Judge James McCarthy. "Gun amnesty programs have been very successful here and in other counties," said County Clerk George J. Williams. "The program will be especially helpful to people who possess wartime souvenirs. Veterans often brought home pistols as souvenirs of their war experience, and many of these guns were never registered. Family members who inherit unregistered guns may not be sure of what to do about registering them." |

Apparently my recent article caused quite a stir among the local hunters. I have heard too many comments not to address the issue one more time. I feel that I was misunderstood in the points I was trying to make and I take responsibility for that in the way my article was written. I did not even title the article, the publications did. I would like to take this opportunity to address some of areas of confusion. |
