"Which group has contributed more to America and our way of life? Who has contributed more to our overall well-being? Is it the National Rifle Association and the gun owners throughout America or the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and those who believe that gun ownership is dangerous for Americans?" ...
"The NRA continues to represent a positive influence in our society. It seeks to inform rather than sway. Allegations by the Brady Campaign that the NRA promotes weapon systems dangerous to police and other government enforcement agencies dont match the evidence. In suburban New York, a schizophrenic walked into a church during Mass and shot to death a priest and a parishioner. In the second story it states that the .50 caliber...'are used by most civilians for hunting big game and in marksmanship competition.' Big Game!"

"That's a grim statistic in a city of approximately 583,600 residents. So, it might appear understandable that [some] people ... are not too keen about legislation that would make it possible for Wisconsin citizens to carry concealed handguns."
"That is, until one does a quick comparison with another city of roughly the same size and social makeup. Welcome to Seattle, Wash., a city of approximately 571,500 people. At the same time Milwaukee had posted a body count of 113 homicides, Seattle had logged a mere 27."

I am writing in reference to the opinion expressed by Manuel R. Cizek regarding why anyone would desire to carry a gun in a public park ["Have a gun? Fine, but stay out of public parks!" Nov. 16].
Mr. Cizek apparently thinks that the posting of a "no guns" sign is an effective deterrent to criminals and that state parks are somehow violence-free zones.
He is, unfortunately, wrong on both counts. Such signs do not deter criminals, and crimes do occur in state parks. It is commonly known that the reason one might want to carry a gun legally in a state park is for self-defense.
If Mr. Cizek wishes to be a victim, so be it. Neither he nor any authority has the right to make victims of the rest of us, however.
