Second Amendment rights don't end in parks

Allen says the bill will "protect the Second Amendment rights of individuals to carry firearms" in all national park units, where and when this doesnt clash with state law. Conceding that such a bill may have a hard time passing in the lame-duck session, Allen said he hopes to attach it as an amendment to some other must-pass legislation. While we dont approve of such legislative end-arounds, we do support the intent of this bill.

A shady organization called the American Hunters and Shooters Association recently surfaced. It is true NRA and AHSA are not natural allies because AHSA president Ray Schoenke and executive director Bob Ricker, are gun control advocates and major contributors to Handgun Control, Inc.

But what every hunter needs to know is Ray Schoenke regularly contributes to Barbara Boxer, Dianne Feinstein and Ted Kennedy - politicians who work with extremist anti-hunting groups that detest our hunting heritage.

How can you claim you're pro-hunting when you support politicians who are anti-hunting? It's like saying, "I'm a hunter, but I support PETA."

The Guyanese-born head of the Brooklyn-based Caribbean Guyana Institute for Democracy is expressing concern over the seemingly relentless increase in shootings and gun violence in some Caribbean-American communities in New York City. His comments come just days after the killing of Jamaica, New York groom, Sean Bell, 23, who was fatally gunned down by police outside a strip club in the borough of Queens early Saturday morning. Rickford Burke is urging politicians, law enforcement officials and community leaders to collaboratively take action to reverse this trend.

A policeman shot and critically wounded a man who forced his way into the officer's Bells Mill home early Saturday. The man is being treated in an intensive care unit at a local hospital and is on life support. "We don't know if it was a run-of-the-mill burglary or if there was a specific target." Although the officer was off duty and in his home at the time of the shooting, the case will still be subject to a routine internal investigation as happens after any officer-involved shooting.

CHATHAM COUNTY, N.C. -- Chatham County's 911 system is back in service after being offline for most of Sunday.

Service was restored to most of the county by Sunday evening, but residents in the western part of the county were still without service until early Monday. Residents with emergencies were asked to call an alternate number while the system was down.

Debra Henzey with the Chatham County Manager's Office did not know exactly what caused the outage but said it had to do with the service providers.

Submitters note: Call 911 and die.

"Atlanta Police Chief Richard Pennington said Sunday his department will review its policy on 'no-knock' warrants and its use of confidential informants after an elderly woman was fatally shot by plainclothes officers."

"Pennington's comments on the incident were the first since Kathryn Johnston was killed Tuesday night after she shot three narcotics officers, who were serving a warrant at her home when they were met with gunfire from the woman. ..."

"The officers entered the home looking for cocaine based on tips from an informant, according to the search warrant released Monday ..." [emphasis added] ...

Submitter's Note: But according to the eighth paragraph of this story, it was an undercover officer who made the buy. So which was it?

Potential misfire for parks

Our national parks are for everyone, but that fact sometimes splits users into opposing camps; for example, the dispute in the past few years between those who want to use snowmobiles in the parks and those who feel the machines disrupt the parks' rustic serenity.

The gun issue could easily split users into camps, as well. But the added factor here is public safety for the 274 million who use the parks every year. There is no place for guns in non-hunting parks, because hikers and campers could be at risk of stray shots. And there is a real concern that gun crime could increase in these parks, which have historically been among the safest places in the country.

The Minnesota Shooting Sports Education Center's winter sports programs begin on Monday, Dec. 4 and continue to April 20th. The Shooting Sports Education Center, or SSEC, offers many different programs to people in the area, and has a storied history. The shooting center started back in the early 80s by governor Rudy Perpich, Minnesota SSECs Kraig Kiger said. His vision was to have Olympic-style venues across the Iron Range. The center was built by the state of Minnesota, and the non-profit, Minnesota Shooting Sports Education Center staffed it and manned the program. Recently, the Minnesota legislation took a long look at our history and decided to help us out financially.

Amadou Diallo's mother learned of the latest NYPD shooting in the most ironic of settings: an East Village screening of a documentary about her son's 1999 death at the hands of city cops.

Amadou Diallo was 22 when he was shot to death Feb. 4, 1999, by cops who fired 41 bullets as he stood, unarmed, in the doorway of his Bronx apartment. The cops were acquitted of all criminal charges by an Albany jury, but the city later paid the Diallo family $3 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit.

"The NYPD needs to be reminded that we thank them for the job they are doing, but they have to help us," Diallo said. "This is why we need to raise awareness, until people in all communities will have good policing without killing people."

Critics of the ruling say that the Second Amendment was intended not only to protect Americans' right to wear tank tops, but also their right to protect themselves with firearms. "Yesterday's ruling is a great victory for anti-constitutional forces within our borders," said National Rifle Association president Charlton Heston in a press conference. "The NRA believes in the right to bare arms, but we also fight for the constitutionally protected right to bear arms."

Everything from the number of shell casings around the car to the absence of a gun inside it to the witness accounts suggests the police officers who shot three unarmed young men early Saturday morning did so in the mistaken and panicked belief they were in mortal danger.

One cop fired 31 times; a harsher public judgment should be reserved for the senior commander. This lieutenant is said to have been so certain he was being fired upon he ducked under the dashboard of his undercover vehicle while the cops he was supposed to supervise fired a total of 50 rounds.

And the safest big city in America proved still so fearful of guns that cops who set out that night to keep us safe ended up killing an unarmed young man on his wedding day.

The police commissioner and mayor met with community leaders Monday at City Hall to discuss the weekend shooting that killed a groom on his wedding day, with Mayor Bloomberg saying he was "deeply disturbed" by the barrage of gunfire unleashed by officers.

Bloomberg said it seemed like excessive force was used in the shooting outside a Queens strip club.

However, Bloomberg was steadfast in his support for Raymond Kelly. I think hes the best police commissioner the city has ever had, Bloomberg said. Nobody takes this more seriously than Commissioner Kelly and I do.
