"'Historically, states have been given the right of self-determination when it comes to deciding who can vote,' Weinberg said. 'Regardless of how you feel about our voter registration laws, the federal legislation which was recently passed by the House would set a terrible precedent, and opens the door for Negro voting activists elsewhere in the country to override our own state's laws. Hopefully, the Governor and our Congressional leaders will stand up for our state and oppose this overreaching federal bill.'" "Sounds pretty ludicrous, doesn't it? I mean in this day and age who could possibly oppose peoples' civil rights? ..." ...

An Arizona police department will conduct an investigation into the bloody arrest of a 54-year-old grandfather during a Black Friday sale at a Walmart, an assistant police chief said Saturday. ... David Chadd, a CNN iReporter from Las Vegas, was among the crowd shopping for video games set up in the Walmart's grocery section. He said Newman "was not resisting" arrest as he was led away from the crowd by a police officer. That officer, Chadd said, then suddenly hooked the suspect around the leg, grabbed him and "slammed him face first into the ground." |

"When the National Rifle Association launched a TV ad campaign this month to have Attorney General Eric Holder fired, it culminated a political frenzy over a once-obscure Arizona gun-smuggling case."
"Operation Fast and Furious ... wound up increasing the firepower of cartels without getting any key players. By all accounts, both the strategy and execution were flawed, ..."
"The initial story line of Fast and Furious was about outrage -- anger that guns, let out of sight, had been used in crimes. But the backstory of the investigation is one of hidden motives, curious contradictions and strange allegiances, both among those who organized the effort and those who exposed it:" ... |

A hearing into the evidence against murder suspect Raymond F. Peake of Hampden Township continued in Cumberland County Court today. Two men testified that a man they later identified as Peake made them feel uneasy when they encountered him at the state Game Commission rifle range in North Middleton Twp. on July 20, 2010. The next day the body of Todd Getgen, a 42-year-old personal injury lawyer from Enola, was found at the range. Peake, 65, a former Camp Hill state prison guard, is charged with killing Getgen and stealing his custom-built AR-15 rifle. Cumberland County District Attorney David Freed is seeking the death penalty in the case.

A Seattle Police Department policy that allows officers to invoke their protection against self-incrimination in even the most routine use-of-force investigations is overbroad and offers unnecessary protection to police while undermining public confidence, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
In a bluntly worded letter Wednesday to Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn, the Department of Justice said the protection has been routinely extended to situations where it was never intended to be applied.
The Department of Justice said the letter was sent in hopes that the department would address the issue immediately, "given the serious nature of our concerns," wrote Jonathan Smith, chief of the Justice Department's Special Litigation Sectio |

It would be premature for us to say, categorically, that Albany and places like it will be safer in the months to come because the state and city lawmakers had the foresight to find the money to keep alive the anti-gun program known as SNUG.
Well need more up-to-date crime statistics to see if this particular anti-gun initiative is able to maintain its record in the cities where its been successful, like Albany, and work better where its record is more mixed. |

The House on Nov. 16 passed a bill that would require "right to carry" laws in one state to be honored by all other states. That's an issue in New Jersey, which is one of the hardest places in the country to legally carry a gun. Those seeking a right to carry in New Jersey must tell a state Superior Court judge why they need a concealed weapon. Generally, the only way to get that right is to be in a highrisk profession or to convince a judge your life is in danger.
The bill that passed the House would wipe away the safeguards New Jersey has had for years regarding people coming into our state. |

I want to tell you about my invisible friend. Its funny, because we all have a relationship with this friend, but most of us just cant see it. I call this friend Tyranny. You see, Tyranny is your invisible friend too.
Tyranny says, "You dont need to peaceably assemble. I will remove the protesters so that you can be safe." Since Tyranny is my friend, I trust it and give up my First Amendment right.
Tyranny says, "You dont need a gun. I have a police department and an army to protect you and keep you safe." Since Tyranny is my friend, I trust it and give up my Second Amendment right.
Tyranny says, "You dont need to worry about warrants or your privacy. We will watch and search everyone to keep you safe." |

New Jersey is not Alaska, Arizona, Vermont or Wyoming, states that allow any resident to carry a concealed firearm without a permit.
About 10 days ago, the U.S. House passed HR-822, The National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act, which would make it legal for an individual who obtains a license to carry a concealed weapon in one state to carry the weapon in the 49 other states that grant permits for concealed weapons. |

Paul's young supporters, on the other hand, say they first got involved in politics as anti-war protesters, self-described "typical Second Amendment Republicans," or marijuana legalization activists.
But where they began doesn't matter, they say. All roads lead to Ron Paul because there is only one issue in this election, they said: freedom. |

The discussion always comes back to Florida, doesn't it? Particularly when the discussion is about guns.
So it was no great shock the other day when I called the folks at the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, and I told them where I was calling from.
"Florida," the woman at the other end of the phone sighed. "Yeah, they are just about the worst." |

However, a fair number of NCAA schools, 33 to be exact, have intercollegiate rifle teams. MIT, Wentworth, and Massachusetts Maritime Academy are the only New England colleges with a gun in the game. Many of the schools dole out scholarships (the maximum allowed by the NCAA for the sport totals 3.6 per school) for these teams. Its a pretty sure shot that the likes of The Citadel, Air Force Academy, Army, VMI, and the Naval Academy dont have to concern themselves with rounding up enough shooters or fret much over the 3.6 scholarship thing. |

I do not believe that students should be allowed to carry loaded firearms with them to class.
Allowing concealed weapons on campus aims to fix a problem that doesn't exist, and will most certainly create new problems if it were ever to be implemented.
Beside the fact that allowing students to carry guns around is both unnecessary and limitlessly dangerous, it is also not constitutionally viable. Vigilantes are by nature unjust because they don't provide their victims with a fair and just trial, as is dictated by our nation's laws. |

The answer from advocates of ending the gun ban is an emphatic yes otherwise campuses become killing zones, in the words of one enthusiastic proponent of the change.
One has to wonder why, then, college and university presidents are lined up against the initiative. Presumably, they value campus safety. Ed McKay, the chancellor of the University of New Hampshire, explained in a letter to legislators that campus life can include impetuous behavior that, were guns in the mix, could lead to dangerous and potentially catastrophic consequences. |

A federal judge in Denver has allowed a lawsuit challenging the U.S. Postal Service's ban on guns in post offices to go forward.
Avon residents Debbie and Tab Bonidy filed the lawsuit last year, saying the ban violates their Second Amendment rights.
The Bonidys say they carry handguns for self-defense and both hold concealed-carry permits, and they do not receive mail service at their remote home.
They say the ban, which prohibits carrying guns both in post offices and in their parking lots, makes it impossible for them to pick up their mail. |
