"Security is tight at the nation's airports too. Three years after September 11th, security officials are confiscating more dangerous items than ever."

"People are taking to the skies this holiday season. And federal security officials are taking their banned belongings. 'When people don't travel often, they tend to forget what they can take and what they can't,' a security official at the Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids says."

"At the Eastern Iowa Airport, the Transportation Security Administration confiscates 30 to 40 dangerous items a day. That's about 1,200 each month."

"Emboldened by the results of this month's elections, the nation's largest gun lobby will push again for a federal law shielding gun makers and sellers from lawsuits."

"When the new Congress convenes in January, the National Rifle Association says, it will have four more pro-gun senators. The trade group hopes that will make the difference in passing a bill that died in the Senate in March."

" 'The chance of success is greater this time,' said Bob Levy, senior fellow at the Cato Institute, a conservative think tank in Washington."

"The idea of lawsuit immunity pits gun owners and hunters in rural areas against city dwellers often beset by violence. The NRA wants a law that would exempt manufacturers from civil lawsuits, except when they violate local, state or federal law."

"Gun owners say lawsuits increase their costs and put dealers at financial risk. Gun-control advocates say lawsuits are the only means of holding reckless dealers and manufacturers accountable."

"The U.S. Supreme Court can ignore the usual liberal-versus-conservative divide in the next two weeks when it takes up California-centric cases on medical marijuana and the direct shipping of wine to consumers. Instead, the justices will be forced to decide between competing versions of conservatism."

"The social conservatives seek more government enforcement in areas such as abortion, pornography, drugs, immigration and homosexuality. The small-government, free-market conservatives seek fewer restrictions on private behavior." ...

"In the last decade, the high court's conservative justices, led by Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, served notice that they wanted to restore limits on federal power."

"They did so by focusing on the Constitution's main source of federal power, the provision that says Congress "may regulate commerce among the several states." In the 20th century, this became the basis for federal laws that set minimum wages, prohibited discrimination in the workplace and protected the environment."

"But Rehnquist said this power had limits too. In 1995, he spoke for a 5-4 majority that struck down the federal Gun Free School Zones Act on the grounds that the mere possession of a gun did not involve interstate commerce. Five years later, the same 5-4 majority voided part of the Violence Against Women Act that allowed victims of sexual assaults to sue their attackers in federal court. A sexual assault is a crime, but it is not interstate commerce, Rehnquist said."

"The gun allegedly used to kill six Wisconsin hunters is a type commonly used to hunt deer and should not be called an assault weapon, say local hunters and gun enthusiasts." ...

"The SKS, a medium-powered carbine usually equipped with a 10-round magazine, is cheap, dependable and commonly used for deer hunting, said Bill Kordus of Menasha, a state certified hunting education instructor and former president of the Twin City Rod and Gun Club." ...

"Kordus said the SKS did not fall under the nations recently expired ban on the sale of assault weapons. And he said its incorrect to label the hunting version of an SKS an assault weapon."

"In the aftermath of the shooting of eight hunters in Wisconsin it's been widely reported the shooter used an assault rifle that is totally inappropriate for deer hunting."

"The reports have been wrong on both counts."

"From the network news to the New York Times it's been reported Chai Soua Vang of St. Paul, Minn., the alleged shooter, used a Yugoslavian SKS semiautomatic rifle to kill six deer hunters and wound two others."

"The SKS has a 10-round internal magazine and holds a 7.62-by-39-millimeter round similar to the .308 popular with deer hunters. The bullet is the same diameter as a .308 but the cartridge is smaller."

"Although Chinese variations of the SKS rifles were banned from being imported in 1989, SKS rifles were never covered by the recently expired assault weapons ban."

"The most conspicuous fact about hunting in America is how safe it is. There are more than 15 million licensed hunters in this country, all armed with weapons that can easily kill a duck, a rabbit, a deer or a human being. All it takes is a split-second misjudgment or lapse of concentration to produce a lasting tragedy. But such tragedies are very much the exception."

"Take any major American city -- Chicago, New York, Detroit, Philadelphia -- and statistics reveal that annually, more people get killed by handguns in any one of these cities than all of Europe combined. Why is that?"

KABA Note: Perhaps Mr. Young has noticed a trend here. All of these cities have some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation.

"Foreign governments keep guns off their streets. They don't allow gun industry lobbyists to write their firearms laws. The safety of their citizens comes first."

KABA Note: Unfortunately, what Mr. Young fails to realize is that the citizens of Europe and Australia get violently victimized at rates much higher than Americans.

"Deer hunters don't point guns at other people. They certainly don't pull the trigger with the intent of killing another person. The person who did this wasn't a hunter, but rather a brutal killer." ...

"The media attention this story received only threw gas on the fire. I was amazed at how loosely the term 'assault rifle' was thrown around this week."

"The fact that Vang was carrying an SKS rifle generated some uninformed gun conversation that often made responsible gun owners look dirty."

"The SKS that Vang carried is a legal firearm that can be purchased over the counter like any other legal firearm. The gun is actually quite popular because it's inexpensive and easy to handle."

"In reality, that SKS is no different than your 30.06 or my shotgun. It was not a factor in these killings, although many media outlets made it sound otherwise."

"It comes down to the individual. That's the most important aspect to remember here."

"How do we pass on an outdoor heritage? Outdoorsmen have had the slogans, Take a Kid Hunting and Take a Kid Fishing, around for many years."

"But unfortunately these slogans with no true plan behind them haven't had the ability to create action. However, on November 13, the State of Alabama took a huge step toward passing on the heritage of hunting for state youth."

"On that Saturday, before the official gun season for deer opened on November 20, the state held a one-day youth-only deer hunt when a youngster 15 years of age or younger could go into the woods and have an opportunity to be the first hunters of the season to take an either-sex deer, when accompanied by a licensed deer hunter at least 25-years old. ..."

"The roughly 20 new laws that kick in this week also include tougher penalties for making methamphetamine and shooting guns at school. The General Assembly in July also approved more security for sexual assault and stalking victims and for threatened plant workers."

"The new domestic violence provisions create a new crime of assault by strangulation, now a felony. Until this week, squeezing your hands around a partner's throat may have only prompted a misdemeanor charge."

"Consider a few of the 'significant contributions' Hammer's made to the state in recent years. She lobbied hard in the last legislative session for bills to hinder police officers trying to track stolen guns, and gave a 'get out of jail free' card to gun ranges that dump toxic lead into the air, ground and water around them. She worked tirelessly to cripple local cities and counties in their attempts to close Florida's egregious 'gun-show' loophole that makes the state an arms-dealer's paradise. Her touted Eddie Eagle children's gun safety program can't make up for that harmful track record."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The prohibition is general. No clause in the Constitution could by any rule of construction be conceived to give to Congress a power to disarm the people. Such a flagitious attempt could only be made under some general pretense by a state legislature. But if in any blind pursuit of inordinate power, either should attempt it, this amendment may be appealed to as a restraint on both. William Rawle, A View of the Constitution 125-6 (2nd ed. 1829)
