"Lots of kids, when very young, worry about monsters under the bed. Even when Mom or Dad comes in to reassure them, the kids may still worry. But as they get older, they begin to check under the bed themselves. And eventually, after many monster-free nights, they figure out that the danger is purely imaginary and they stop worrying."

"You would think by now that gun-control supporters would have made the same progress on one of their most fearsome demons: the licensing of citizens to carry concealed firearms. But they seem to be trapped in a recurring nightmare that exists only in their minds." ...

"Let's see how many reasons there are to carry a concealed weapon into a national park."

"Perhaps you might encounter a rattlesnake or some other potentially deadly critter that would pose a threat. Perhaps you were with an argumentative acquaintance who had pushed you to the limit in a discussion over, well, gun control. Perhaps a little paranoia had set in since you climbed out of bed that morning and you thought you needed a concealed weapon to ward off any attackers - real or imagined."

"Surely there are others, but none of them are particularly legitimate. Yet, outgoing U.S. Sen. George Allen wants to put a cap on his one-term career in the Senate with legislation that would let visitors carry a concealed weapon into a national park." ...

Nor do I deem it necessary, after the full and elaborate discussions which have taken place before the country on this subject, to do more than state the general considerations which have satisfied me of the unconstitutionality and inexpediency of the exercise of such a power...."

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Police said a local mini-mart owner fought back during a robbery attempt, putting three of the five culprits in the hospital.

Police said a group of men pulled their guns after Germantown store owner John Lee told them to pull their hoods down.

Lee grabbed his own gun and shot three of the four suspects inside the Musgrave Street and Chelten Avenue store before they could target him.

He found the fourth gunman hiding in the back of the store.

"I found out he had a gun on him, so I beat him up pretty bad," Lee said. "Kicked them hard; I gave them a lesson."

Police did not release the suspects' name or medical conditions, but said they were all suspects in other robberies, too.

Police arrested them and a fifth suspect who was waiting outside in a getaway car.

"The extraordinary coincidence of two elected public officials in Knox County using their own firearms to thwart crimes and assist in the apprehension of suspects this month deserves comment."

"No sooner had the furor over Knox County Commissioner Greg 'Lumpy' Lamberts defense of his person and property by pulling a pistol on a suspected robber in his business died down to a dull roar when state Sen. Tim Burchett used a pistol to stop a burglary at a warehouse he rents."

"Mayor Bloomberg's decision, in the midst of the crisis over the shooting of Sean Bell, to turn to the Reverend Al Sharpton is one of those errors that he is going to have to deal with as he contemplates a campaign for the presidency in 2008. New York City itself will no doubt survive the mayor's faux pas, because the fact is that police shootings in this city are among the lowest per capita of any big city. And the idea that the leadership of the police department is somehow racist, or even indifferent to the sensitivities of the minority communities in this city, is going to be hard even for the critics of the police to credit. But the mayor's reputation as a leader in a crisis, that is something that takes a long time to earn ..." ...
