Known as the "Patriot Act", the law shifts the FBI's primary mission from solving crimes to gathering domestic intelligence. In addition, the Treasury Department has been charged with building a financial intelligence-gathering system whose data can be accessed by the CIA.
Most significantly, the CIA will have the authority for the first time to influence FBI surveillance operations inside the United States and to obtain evidence gathered by federal grand juries and criminal wiretaps. |

"Though gun-control groups have tried to capitalize on the Sept. 11 attacks, those attempts have misfired. Tom Diaz of the Violence Policy Center tried to claim that Barrett Firearms had sold .50 caliber sniper rifles to Usama bin Laden. Not many in the media bought this, which was a good thing since it turned out that those rifles had actually been sold to the United States Government." |

"President Bush will soon issue an executive order allowing a sitting president to withhold a predecessor's papers from the public even if the past president wanted them released."
"The White House denied Thursday the move was designed to prevent historians and the media from delving into the activities of former executive aides who may now be working for the White House."
Not directly RKBA-related... unless Bush is looking ahead to hide his own staff's unconstitutional dealings... |

State motor vehicle authorities are working on a plan to create a national identification system that would link all driver databases and employ high-tech cards with a fingerprint, computer chip or other unique identifier.
The effort by the American Assoc. of Motor Vehicle Admins., which would take several years to implement if approved by state and federal authorities, follows disclosures that some of the Sept. 11 hijackers used false identities or obtained driver's licenses fraudulently. |

The Bush Administration is laying the foundation for a whole new classification of law.
Note: My primary focus in submitting this article is as an illustration of what I'll call "Rights Creep". Make note of Mr. Martin's reference, several paragraphs down, to Fourth and Fifth amendment "privelege".
If we do not stand up for our RIGHTS even in the language that we chose to express our opinions, what chance do we have? |

An example of how increased "security" is being applied. The problem occurred after take-off.
Local TV news reports included sighting military jets in the area, ready to fire on the commuter plane. (Nothing about this on-line, however.) |

"High-powered sniper rifles capable of piercing airline fuel tanks from a mile away can be purchased legally in Florida and elsewhere with no questions asked despite widespread efforts to tighten domestic security."
"The .50-caliber weapon, prized by U.S. military forces for its accuracy, range and armor-piercing firepower, is one of many potent assault-style rifles sold at gun shows across America."
