"Gun owners chalked up a victory last week when the Illinois Senate voted for a blanket law to regulate the transportation of guns, overriding a veto by Gov. Rod Blagojevich."
"The measure would eliminate the ability of towns to toughen regulations on how guns are transported through their streets, something places like Chicago and Carbondale have done."
"Illinois Senators voted 38-20 last Thursday to override the governor's veto of the measure, sending it to the House, where legislators voted in favor of the measure 79-36 in May. It was expected to come up for a vote this week, as early as Wednesday." |

"Law Enforcement Alliance of America (LEAA) Executive Director and Retired Police Officer James J. Fotis today countered divisive claims by the Director of Illinois State Police in favor of restrictions on law-abiding gun owners. Fotis called on the Illinois Legislature to override Governor Blagojevich's veto on SB 2104, SB 57 and HB 340."
"LEAA challenged claims made at a pro-gun control press conference where the Director of the Illinois State Police claimed his personal, political views represented all of law enforcement. Said Fotis, 'Director Trent may speak for his boss, the Governor, but his claim to speak for each and every man and woman in Illinois law enforcement is a preposterous stretch.'" |

"In condemning legislation protecting firearm manufacturers from certain lawsuits, The Courier-Journal's Oct. 22 editorial, 'Special rights for gunmakers,' slays the straw man of its own making, while censoring the heart of the matter by omission. Special rights? Let's illuminate what the editorial did not."
"Groups seeking to destroy the Second Amendment rights of their fellow Americans cannot risk an honest, aboveboard exposure of their goal. Their deceitful strategy of burying this right under myriad so-called 'reasonable' rules, regulations, prohibitions, controls and other hindrances so that this second item of the Bill of Rights will become essentially nullified, in that no one can really exercise it." ... |

------- "Gun violence victimizes far too many in our state, especially those living in our cities. In addition to the physical, psychological and emotional toll that gun violence takes on victims and their families, gun violence imposes a huge economic burden on all of us. For example, treatment of a gunshot wound to the chest costs on average $322,000, according to the Violence Prevention Institute, and the cost is far higher if there's neurological damage. Because most victims have no insurance, according to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, most of this cost will be paid indirectly by private health insurance. So solving our gun-violence problem is both a public-safety requirement and an economic imperative."
"I'm proud of my strong record in the U.S. Senate on gun-violence prevention, and I would bring that same commitment to tackling this problem in New Jersey as governor. ..." |

Cook County State's Attorney's office spokesman Tom Stanton said Johnson pleaded guilty Tuesday to misdemeanor unlawful use of a weapon.
He was arrested after a valet outside the club told police he saw Johnson move a handgun from his lap to the center console of his vehicle.

"From April 2004 to September 2005, 70,098 standard licenses, and 138 temporary emergency licenses were issued to Ohio residents. On average, Ohio sheriffs are issuing approximately 130 concealed handgun licenses to law-abiding citizens per day."
