That, at any rate, is the anecdotal evidence. And certainly "knife culture", as it is called, is a government priority. There has been a nationwide knife amnesty, local knife clampdowns and an anti-knife robbery operation by British Transport Police. The government is currently pushing through legislation to raise the legal age for buying a knife from 16 to 18. The Home Secretary wants to double the penalty for carrying a knife in public "without good reason or lawful authority" to four years in jail. There is talk of a mandatory prison sentence for anyone caught carrying a knife. Only this month the Education Secretary gave schools the go-ahead to subject pupils to searches with metal detectors. |

If this hole-ridden piece of legislation was the best that a Democratic president and Democratic congress could pass in 1993, then gun control is a serious waste of time as a political issue. Gun control can only work as a total prohibition, wherein the price of guns in general becomes so high that only the most polished mafiosos can own one, or perhaps a more stringent registration system, though there is scant evidence that registration systems actually limit gang violence. |

When David Stern suggested NBA players might want to consider leaving their guns at home, the commissioner overlooked a few things.
Are nunchucks and knives still OK? Where does he stand on flammable liquids and Samurai swords? How about fireworks?
The notion of players walking around with any of these is, of course, ridiculous. But so, too, is Stern having to remind grown men to use their brains. Guns were never meant to be accessories, and toting one in public — especially to a nightclub or other alcohol-fueled spot — is nothing more than an invitation for trouble. |

The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) is today calling on the Federal Election Commission to investigate whether the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence has violated FEC regulations and Federal Election Campaign laws by advocating the election of federal candidates in communications to the general public.
"For at least the past two weeks," noted CCRKBA Chairman Alan M. Gottlieb, "the Brady Campaign has been sending out endorsements over the U.S. Newswire for public consumption. Each one of the Brady Campaign's news releases had to be paid for, and this amounts to the organization promoting the election of candidates to federal office through paid advertising. |

Somerset County investigators are still trying to determine if a shooting was self defense or murder.
Matthew Eperjesi was originally charged with the shooting death of Perry Zimmerman in April, but the charges were dropped in June after investigators could not prove Eperjesi meant to kill Zimmerman.
Police said Zimmerman and Terry Mostoller entered Eperjesi's apartment, thus making the shooting a case of self defense. |
