With Donald Trump calling on citizens to guard against a "rigged" election, some Michigan election officials are worried people may bring guns and perhaps intimidate voters to polling places on Tuesday.
Michigan law is silent on the issue of guns at polling places, and there is a question of whether schools and churches designated as "weapon-free zones" have to loosen their rules during voting hours.
"State election law does not address firearms laws in polling locations, so normal rules for carrying laws apply," said Fred Woodhams, spokesman for the Michigan Secretary of State, which oversee elections. |

In typical fashion, I spent my Saturday morning having coffee, sitting on the front porch and reading the news from my home city of Tampa. The stories all seemed pretty typical, uninteresting even, until I got to the Crime section. Several years ago, the story said, one man had shot his neighbor in a dispute in his front yard that began over a noise complaint. He immediately invoked Floridas Stand Your Ground law. He promptly called a hotline that offered legal help for people who sought protection specifically under Stand Your Ground laws. He was never charged with any crime. |

Donald Trump has tapped U.S. House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, of Louisiana, for the GOP presidential candidate's Second Amendment Coalition, a panel of advisers on issues related to gun rights and the U.S. Supreme Court.
Scalise's name was announced along with 63 others as part of the unveiling of the coalition that, presumably, would only continue to exist if Trump defeats Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in next week's election. |

After the piece went viral, I appeared on television, radio, and podcasts describing my experience, and in most of those interviews I very intentionally mentioned that my wife and I both carry handguns. Weve taught our older kids to use firearms as well (my oldest daughter is a natural with the AR-15). I had two reasons for doing this first to send the message to anyone thinking about harming our family that were armed and know how to use our weapons, and second to remind readers and listeners of the vital importance of the Second Amendment in securing the blessings of American liberty. Quite frankly, its harder to intimidate and silence armed citizens. |

Anytime a person is in possession of any kind of lethal weapon it should be taken seriously, whether it is for hunting, sport shooting or self defense purposes. Owning a firearm of any kind comes with great responsibility. Morals and ethics cannot be under minded and also need to be taken seriously.
Whether one agrees or disagrees with the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights, it has developed into an expression of ones political character rather than the original intent of being based on personal virtue.
Taking the politics out of the equation one is left with the fundamental belief of the Founding Fathers which comes down to individual choices. |

There will be a Second Amendment peace vigil Saturday in front of Haywood County Courthouse in Waynesville.
Vigil organizer Jess Dunlap said the goal is to bring awareness to the fact that an ordinance passed in 1995 bans citizens from bringing firearms into the courthouse because it is county property.
Dunlap added that there are obvious issues with the ordinance. The biggest issue, Dunlap said, is that there are individuals, such as homeless people, who dont have anywhere to store their weapon when they have to go to court. |

Both Johnson and Feingold say they are supporters of gun rights, but Feingold supports expanded background checks for gun buyers while Johnson doesn't.
"Having grown up in Wisconsin, I understand the importance of gun rights and the Second Amendment," Feingold said at an October debate sponsored by the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Foundation. "I believe people have the right to have guns for the purposes of self-defense and hunting."
But he says his is a common sense approach while Johnson's is not.
"The one thing I would make sure of is that we follow the common sense of those that demand overwhelmingly that we have background checks at gun shows and on the Internet," Feingold said. |

As the presidential election has captured the national spotlight, there are many other matters to be aware of prior to Nov. 8. Congressional elections are particularly critical this year, as a shift in the U.S. Senate is a real possibility. That would mean that Chuck Schumer would become majority leader. Retiring Harry Reid was a moderate compared to Schumer. If the House changes hands, we would see Nancy Pelosi as speaker of the House once more. Everyone should remember how well that worked. And then there are state elections, including five ballot measures dealing with firearm laws in Washington, Colorado, California, Nevada and Maine. |

Do you live in one of the 34 states electing U.S. senators this year?
If so, your failure to vote on Election Day could be the straw that breaks the back of Second Amendment freedom in America. Or yours could be the vote that saves our right to keep and bear arms.
The only thing more important than preserving a pro-Second Amendment majority in the U.S. Senate on Election Day is defeating Hillary Clinton.
Because if Hillary Clinton wins the White House next Tuesday, the only thing that can stop her from gutting the Second Amendment is a pro-freedom U.S. Senate. |

As I was packing up three 9mm revolvers to head down to my shooting range, a visiting friend asked, Why would anyone want a revolver in 9mm? I replied, Well, because And then I stopped because I couldnt think of a reason why anyone would want a 9mm revolver either.
My first memory of 9mm revolvers goes back nearly 50 years. That was when Ruger began selling convertibles. Those were .357 Magnum Blackhawks with an extra cylinder for 9mm Parabellum. Although Ive owned many Ruger .357 Magnum Blackhawks since buying my first in 1968, Ive never had a convertible one until the company loaned me this one specifically for this article. |

According to CNN, one major gun manufacturer said sales are soaring as the presidential election looms.
Sturm Ruger reported a 66% increase in its third quarter earnings compared to last year and one local business said they have seen an increase as well.
At First Stop Gun & Coin, the summer increase could be attributed to the election, but fall numbers are expected to relate to hunting season. |

Question 3 reads, Do you want to require background checks prior to the sale or transfer of firearms between individuals not licensed as firearms dealers, with failure to do so punishable by law, and with some exceptions for family members, hunting, self-defense, lawful competitions, and shooting range activity? The proposed legislation would require anyone selling a gun in Maine, or giving a gun to someone except for a few exceptions such as family members and hunting companions, to complete the sale at a federal firearms licensed dealership. A yes vote means the voter wishes to require a background check on all gun sales or transfers, including private sales and gun show sales. |

Republican congressional candidate Stewart Mills is a strong believer in the Second Amendment. He is a lifelong hunter but believes the right to bear arms is more than just hunting. Mills gets an A-rating from the National Rifle Association.
His opponent U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan says hes a hunter, too, but he gets an F-rating from the NRA.
There must be a reason. |

Accordingly, if Ms. Clinton becomes president, Senate Republicans should give her a list of acceptable nominees not limited to conservatives; that inappropriately would be dictating to the president in the mold of Justice Anthony Kennedy. Sometimes he votes with the four conservative justices, sometimes with the liberals. Providing a list of acceptable centrist nominees would not only be legitimate, but wholly consistent with the constitutional prescription that "consent" be predicated upon the phrase "by and with the Advice" of the Senate. |

Government data shows the number of people looking for gun permits is surging before Election Day -- the 18th straight month of record numbers, according to the system for tracking background checks on gun sales.
In October, 2.3 million background checks for gun-related purchases were processed, setting an all-time monthly record, according to the FBI National Instant Criminal Background Check, known as NICS data. |

A slew of conservatives in the state House and Senate lost their primary elections in August. For the sake of concealed carry, perhaps the most important Republican conservative who lost was Sen. Forrest Knox from Altoona. He was the driving force behind the loosing of gun restrictions in the state.
Moderates and Democrats will have bigger numbers in the Legislature when it reconvenes in January. And they will almost assuredly take up the issue of concealed carry on college campuses in the new session. |

Contrary to the sharp division of national rhetoric, many gun control measures garner a broad level of support. According to a Pew Research Center study published in August 2015, 85% of Americans favor expanded background checks, which includes 88% of Democrats and 79% of Republicans. Furthermore, 79% support laws to prevent mentally ill people from purchasing guns and 70% favor the creation of a federal database to track all gun sales.
In an effort to understand why this widespread support has not translated into legislative action, I spoke with a handful of people in the Walla Walla and Whitman communities whose unique experiences with the issue of guns and gun control may shed light on this complicated issue. |
