FULL TEXT BELOW:

A National Guard F-16 fighter jet on a nighttime training mission Wednesday fired 25 rounds of ammunition that tore through an intermediate school. No one was injured.

The military is investigating the incident that damaged Little Egg Harbor Intermediate School shortly after 11 p.m.

Police were called to the area when a custodian heard what sounded like someone running across the roof of the school. The custodian was the only person in the school at the time.

Police Chief Mark Siino on Thursday said police officers noticed punctures in the roof. Ceiling tiles had fallen into classrooms and there were scratch marks in the asphalt outside the building.

The 2-inch long bullets are made of lead and do not explode, said Col. Brian Webster, commander of the 177th Fighter Wing of the New Jersey Air National Guard.

It was unclear why the shots were fired, Webster said.

An acting head administrator at Classic City High School on Mitchell Bridge Road reported Wednesday that a student told her another student had a pistol in her minivan that was parked on school grounds, Athens-Clarke police said.

The administrator said she was told about the weapon at about 2 p.m. and allowed both the student who told her about it and the 17-year-old student who allegedly had the gun to leave about an hour later, according to police.

"I did not get to speak with the witness or suspect," an officer wrote in a report. "The limited information I received came from (the administrator), who expressed that she didn't want to get involved."

The officer went by the alleged offender's residence twice, at 3:25 and 7:30 p.m., but each time no one was home, police said.

FULL TEXT BELOW:

New Zealand's laws covering self-defence are clear, longstanding and shared by most other common law jurisdiction countries, says Justice Minister Phil Goff. Act MP Stephen Franks, who is promoting change to the law, has got his facts wrong in politicising the issue. Phil Goff says the statutory defence permits the use of reasonable force to defend oneself and against the forcible breaking and entering of a person's house.

That force may include deadly force in certain serious circumstances. Someone being attacked with a knife or a gun would likely be justified in using deadly force to repel the attack. Phil Goff says we don't want an Americanisation of our laws that encourages people to arm themselves and take the law into their own hands by shooting first and asking questions afterwards. [emphasis added]
