The Scottish Executive's crackdown on knife crime could lead to a rise in the use of guns, a government adviser has warned.
Justice department officials have been told of a possible influx of illegal firearms into the country a result of the high-profile campaign to get knives off the streets.
Ministers have introduced a series of measures to make it harder for criminals to carry knives, including a licensing scheme for the sale of non-domestic knives and tougher sentences for people caught carrying bladed weapons. |

Steven Garcia is the Los Angeles police officer who fired 10 shots at Devin Brown, a 13-year-old boy who died as a result. The case attracted intense scrutiny, the city's Police Commission ruled it improper and it ultimately cost taxpayers a $1.5-million legal settlement.
And yet, when Garcia last week faced an administrative hearing into allegations of misconduct arising from that 2005 shooting, the charges were considered in secret. That is a sharp departure by the Los Angeles Police Department, which has historically opened such hearings to the public.
Hearings were conducted in private because officials believe they are required to exclude the public under an August ruling of the California Supreme Court. |

Under a tentative agreement with the city of Richmond's insurer, the family of Verlon Johnson will get $990,000 to dismiss a federal civil-rights lawsuit over Johnson's shooting death by a police officer.
The lawsuit alleges that the officer who shot Johnson in May 2002, David Melvin, violated Johnson's civil rights. The lawsuit also claims that the Richmond Police Department's training and policy on the use of deadly force was defective and led to Johnson's death. Melvin was acquitted of a second-degree murder charge in February 2004.
Steven D. Benjamin and Betty Layne DesPortes of Richmond represent the family. "We're very happy with the settlement on behalf of the wife and five children of Verlon Johnson," Benjamin said. |

A Lake City lawyer faces a felony weapons charge after Baker County authorities said he carried a loaded 9mm handgun into the county courthouse when he arrived for a domestic violence injunction hearing.
Sgt. Charles Ross, who is in charge of courthouse security, said the attorney said he carried the weapon because of threats against him in Columbia County.
Ross said the attorney kept asking authorities to give him a break because he was a lawyer.
"He, more than anyone else, should know better," Dobson said. "This is a serious matter."

The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms today responded to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's latest outrage -- suggesting that citizens in his city don't need gun permits -- by reminding the anti-gun rights mayor that "self defense isn't a privilege, it's a right."

"There goes Mikey again," CCRKBA Chairman Alan M. Gottlieb declared. "He still thinks there's a Bill of 'Needs' instead of a Bill of Rights. Where did he get the arrogant notion that people need to ask him to exercise their rights, especially the right of self-defense? |

For many years, Republican office seekers have sought support among members of the National Rifle Association by telling them that the Democrats want to take their guns away. As one of the most effective lobbies in the country, the NRA has maintained that an armed citizenry was a bulwark against the rise of a despotic government.
We now have a government that can arrest any American citizen that the president has declared to have aided a terrorist organization, detain that individual without due process, try them without showing any evidence against them and imprison them as long as the president wishes.

New Zealanders own over one million guns as well as anti-tank projectors, grenade launchers, machineguns and military-style semi-automatics, police gun-ownership statistics show.
But police say that people have nothing to fear because New Zealand has a good gun-safety record. |

The Ohio State rifle team lost 4,542 to 4,467 to Akron in a home meet Saturday. The Buckeye scarlet team shot 2,215 in smallbore and 2,252 in air rifle. Akron posted a 2,249 in smallbore rifle and 2,293 in air rifle. OSU's Kelly Lake (Jr., Harrison, Ohio) scored a team-high 573 in air rifle for the Buckeyes while Staci Collins (So., Waterford, Ohio) and Steven Nozaki (So., Hilo, Hawaii) shared team-high honors in smallbore rifle at 559. Akron's Julie DeBrita posted a 578 in smallbore rifle and she and Megan Reinking shared team-high honors in air rifle at 577. |

A man allegedly attempting armed robbery at a local pawnshop was shot in the head by a store employee Monday morning.
The man is in critical condition at a local hospital.

Last session's signature gun legislation, a bill to allow citizens to use deadly force if they feel that their lives are in danger, also is about freedom rather than safety. The law now requires citizens to attempt to flee before defending themselves with, if necessary, deadly force.
Opponents of the bill say it would lead to bloodbaths. That's the same thing they said about concealed carry laws.

Our nation came about as a direct result of an armed struggle with a repressive, foreign government.
...
More than 200 years later, we are fairly well invested in our democracy. Besides its romantic appeal, the Second Amendment does not in any way serve its original intent. Owning an assault rifle will not in any hypothetical situation do much to overthrow the most powerful military in the world, should it be deemed necessary to overthrow our own government.
Ed: I would suggest the author consider the effectiveness of small arms and improvised munitions against the best trained and equipped army on the planet as seen in Iraq. |

In Richland County alone, there have been ten murders in the past eleven days. So far the only connection is that a gun was used at each crime scene.
But some are asking if there could be another link? Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, says he believes there's a correlation between the murders and South Carolina's gun laws. |

The gun control movement has lost momentum in recent years. The Democratic Party has been conspicuously silent on the issue in recent elections because they know it's a political loser. In the midst of declining public support for new gun laws, more and more states have adopted concealed-carry programs. The September 11th terrorist attacks and last year's hurricanes only made matters worse for gun control proponents, as millions of Americans were starkly reminded that we cannot rely on government to protect us from criminals. Gun sales have gone up. |
