A week after Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright made national news saying all women should carry concealed weapons to ward off attacks, eight women took part in the regularly scheduled concealed weapons permit class Sunday at Defender Shooting Sports.
But not because of Wright's message which he reiterated today for all citizens after the shooting and injury of a deputy in his county. The 20 people in Sunday's class were mostly unaware of the Upstate sheriff's plea.
They were there for a unanimous and singular purpose: defense.
"I came here to be certified, so I can be protected," Amanda Debardelabeen of Columbia said. "It's always good to have protection legally." |

There is no silencer yet on the debate over guns in our state. One week with concealed carry in effect and the law has already changed regarding training.
...
A legislative committee voted to strike the time amount on training placed in the law by the attorney general. Those who voted it through wanted instructors to decide the amount of training necessary. |

The sponsor of the concealed carry bill in the legislature, State Sen. Kit Jennings, R-Natrona, told the council, however, that just because there was no mention of open carry weapons in the law didnt mean it wasnt considered.
Id like to point out that lack of mention in a law doesnt mean it hasnt been addressed, Jennings said, while indicating some legislators might even favor fewer restrictions. You never know what may pop up in the next session or two concerning these issues, and that open carry may never be addressed because the majority of us may feel its not broken. |

If one's home is one's castle, the owner should have the right to protect himself or herself from intruders.
We're glad Wisconsin has a law that allows homeowners to defend themselves against violent people who might come into their residence and threaten them.
So we're puzzled why our lawmakers want to add another law that offers criminal and civil immunity to homeowners who act in self-defense against intruders. |

When Barack Obama became president, many people expected a new approach to drug policy. While running for the U.S. Senate in 2004, Obama said during a campaign event that he favored marijuana decriminalization. And the appointment of Gil Kerlikowske, then chief of the Seattle Police Department as Drug Czar, gave many people hope given Seattles emphasis on harm reduction policies instead of prosecution for drug offenses. In fact, one of Kerlikowskes first acts as Drug Czar was to call an end to the term War on Drugs. How people change. Today The New York Times has a story on how the Obama administration has deployed D.E.A. commando-style squads to Central America and the Caribbean to fight drugs cartels. |

As some of you are likely aware, Berkeley County Prosecutor Pamela Games-Neely sent a letter to the legislature ranting in true Sarah Brady fashion about the lack of a law preventing lawful carry of firearms on college and university campuses.
Her rant requested a ban of carry on all such institutions.
Thanks to Delegate Larry Kump (a true believer in your Second Amendment rights) for bringing this to our attention. |

There has been a lot of talk about gun rights lately, but are more people taking advantage of their right to bear arms? Some gun enthusiasts say yes.
Instructors say it is a fairly simple process to get a permit, including an eight hour class of information and about 50 rounds of hand-on experience. Grand Strand residents say they are either very supportive of the idea or they are against guns even being in the house. |

In a video recently uploaded on YouTube, an unidentified protester holding a video camera, filming a police line during the early hours of Thursday, Nov. 3, was shot with a rubber bullet or a beanbag round after repeatedly asking police officers: Is this okay? The unnamed protester wrote on his YouTube page: While filming a police line at Occupy Oakland after midnight on Nov. 3 following the Nov. 2 general strike, an officer opens fire and shoots me with a rubber bullet. I was standing well back. There was no violence or confrontations of any kind underway. At 0:31 seconds you can see a tall officer in the front raise his weapon and then fire. This is the full clip of the incident. |

Hodges said the suspect, later identified as Gary Wayne Mullins, 50, of Charleston, was acting strangely and appeared to be reaching for a gun. At that point Comer, who has a license to carry a concealed weapon, pulled out his own gun and ordered Mullins to lie down on the floor, Hodges said.
Comer held Mullins at gunpoint until police arrived, Hodges said. He said Mullins appeared to be under the influence of drugs, and police found a large number of prescription pills and amphetamines in his car. |

What should have been a quick trip to pick up a 2-year-old's birthday cake turned into a triple murder over the weekend, when gunfire tore through three people inside a vehicle outside a Chicago bakery, reports say.
Chanda Thompson, 21, was picking up the cake for her daughter when she and friend Cortez Champion, 21, were gunned down Saturday afternoon. A man described as Thompson's boyfriend, but whose name was being withheld, was also killed.
"People are always getting shot or robbed in this neighborhood," an employee at a fast-food restaurant next to the bakery told the Sun-Times. |

As the nation's biggest city deals with threats of terrorism and a variety of violent crimes, carrying a little bit of marijuana is still a big deal. There are more arrests for low-level pot possession in New York City -- about 50,000 a year -- than any other crime, accounting for about one of every seven cases that turn up in criminal courts. ... In response, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly recently reminded officers they can't make arrests for small amounts of pot in people's pockets or bags -- and can't trigger an arrest by searching people or telling them to empty their pockets. |

Navy scientists with the Office of Naval Research (ONR) hit a new milestone, successfully firing their electromagnetic railgun for the 1,000th time as the state-of-the-art weapon edges closer to real world deployment. A theoretical dream for decades, the railgun is unlike any other weapon used in warfare. And though still in testing, it's quite real, as the U.S. Navy proved in a record-setting test Monday, Oct. 31, in Dahlgren, Va. Rather than relying on a explosion to fire a projectile, it uses an electomagnetic current to accelerate a non-explosive bullet at several times the speed of sound. The conductive projectile zips along a set of electrically charged parallel rails and out of the barrel at speeds up to Mach 7 [ca. 7,875 fps]

Why not? We pay for having a terrible federal government every day. Why should this be any different just because it involves lost rights instead of lost money?
Seriously, though, having Obamas AG mumble about more gun regulation in front of a mic will accomplish two things. One: Its bound to worry all sorts of swing-state gun owners in Pennsylvania and Ohio once word of his testimony gets around, which is all to the good for election day next year. Two: The more gun owners perk up about Holders testimony, the more public interest theres bound to be in Fast & Furious. |

Thirteen-year-old Anna Yu is the first member of her family to handle a rifle, which she recently used to kill a deer with a single shot in an adult-supervised hunt in Idaho.
Yu is among the growing number of American girls and women from teens to senior citizens who have taken up hunting, a sport traditionally associated with men and still dominated by them.
"Women are not just stuck in the kitchen these days, and hunting is no longer a gender-specific activity," said Kelton Hatch, of the Idaho Department of Fish and Game.
Idaho hunting instructor Jim Toynbee said 40 years of teaching youths, aged 9 to 17, has convinced him that girls are surer shots.
