Washington voters approved much stricter gun laws in Tuesdays midterm elections, which supporters hope will help reduce gun violence.

The initiative, approved by 60 percent of residents, raises the minimum age to purchase semiautomatic rifles (or assault rifles) to 21, from 18. It calls for enhanced background checks for these purchases and proof that the buyer has taken a training course. Washingtonians looking to buy the gun will also need to wait 10 days before obtaining it.

It does seem like polymer-frame pistols have taken over the self-defense market, with Glock, Smith & Wesson, SIG Sauer and others offering utilitarian variants for concealed carry. However, theres still a stronghold of DA/SA handguns out there, joined most recently by the Springfield Armory XD-E, and many of these have replaceable grips. While polymer panels are prevalent, theres a number of upgrades available that are quite easy to make.

Its tradition, Mr. Salvini said of hunting and responsible gun ownership when he signed the pledge. Its culture.

Italian culture, linked in the popular imagination with fine art, fashion and good food, does not typically conjure up the image of assault weapons. But in September, the government loosened gun laws, making it possible to own more guns like the AR-15, an assault rifle that has been used in numerous mass shootings in the United States, most recently a Pennsylvania synagogue where 11 were killed.

Well, the 2018 midterm elections are in the books. In some ways, they went very well the GOP took out four Democrats who voted against Donald Trumps pro-Second Amendment judicial nominees, while confirming anti-Second Amendment judges selected by Barack Obama. In governors races, some previously pro-Second Amendment governorships went the other way due to retirements, and the loss of Scott Walker is a devastating blow in the Badger State.

It would be an understatement to say that gun debate partisans have different views about the proper relationship between gun rights and regulation. From a scholarly perspective, those differences are typically refracted through the lenses of constitutional law, public health, political science, andwith increasing precision and clarityhistory and sociology. When it comes to regulatory law, however, the interdisciplinary conversation has barely begun.

After the shooting massacre at a high school in Parkland, Fla., survivors found themselves taking on the National Rifle Association as they crisscrossed the country rallying young adults to register and vote against candidates opposed to gun control.

On Tuesday, the Parkland students got a dose of political reality.

While their registration drives enrolled thousands of younger votes, the students were unable to turn key races in their home state. Ron DeSantis was elected governor and Rick Scott was leading the vote for United States senator. Both Republicans were endorsed by the National Rifle Association.
