"To McCarthy, extending the assault weapons ban fits nicely into the war on terror. She cited both the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and last year's Washington-area sniper shootings as two reasons the ban needs to remain in effect."

-------
What unbelievable drivel! How were so-called "assault" weapons or high-capacity magazines involved in those tragedies? McCarthy won't be satisfied until each and every gun is banned, and she will stoop to using the blood of innocents to promote her nefarious cause.

FULL TEXT BELOW:

President Bush quietly signed legislation Tuesday that would extend for 10 years a ban on plastic guns that can be slipped past airport metal detectors or through X-ray machines.

The legislation bans the manufacture, sale or possession of such firearms, but exempts military and intelligence agencies. It renews a ban that was last reauthorized in 1998 and expires this month.

It was passed as officials worry that terrorists would get their hands on weapons undetectable by metal detectors at airports and other security checkpoints.

"At GOA, we realize how easy it is to just focus on the bad news. Certainly we had our share of it this year. Both houses of Congress voted to reauthorize the plastic gun ban WITHOUT A RECORDED VOTE and to send the bill to President Bush in late November."

"The President announced he would sign a bill to reauthorize the semi-auto gun ban in April, and the Supreme Court has consistently refused to grant relief to individuals that are victimized by anti-gun laws."

"Yes, there has been bad news. But there has been a lot of good news as well, and you folks have been an instrumental reason. Please take a look at a brief review of some of the highlights that we have achieved together this year."

"...Hosts of the bonfire party told participants the Lake County sheriff's office was looking for a man wearing a gray sweat shirt, a white mask and carrying an ax. They said the man was chasing neighborhood children."

"Taking the information seriously, Frederick reportedly went home 10 minutes later and locked up his house. He also got a .32-caliber revolver and tucked it into his back pocket to protect his family. He then went back to the party."

"According to the report, an hour later dogs began barking and someone yelled they saw a man lurking behind a tree, matching the description of the masked man police reportedly were chasing."

"The report said Frederick yelled that he had a gun, and fired two rounds into the ground while the masked man continued toward him."

"Frederick reportedly fired two more rounds into the ground, yelling at the man that he had a gun. When the masked man got 10 feet from Frederick, police said Frederick fired two shots hitting him in the face."

If the person on the receiving end of this handgun didn't wear a badge for a living, would this still be going to a grand jury?

And if you were a police officer with any common sense, would you not stop once the warning shots were fired?

"It's no news that banks have been conscripted to spy on you. Everyone knows that by now. But this recent measure redefines 'financial institutions,' [a term] that was previously limited to banks, credit unions, and savings and loan organizations. Now the definition also includes brokers and dealers registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission, investment bankers, operators of credit-card systems, insurance companies, dealers in precious metals, stones, or jewels, licensed senders of money, telegraph companies, airplane and boat dealers, Realtors and estate closings, and the U.S. Post Office."

"By this change, Congress has surreptitiously expanded the scope of businesses upon which so-called 'national security letters' can be served by the FBI in order to obtain financial records without any prior court order, without even the slim judicial supervision that was previously provided by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court in such matters."

"The case, which was dismissed by a Superior Court judge and appealed to the high court, has spurred debate about the section of the Rhode Island Constitution that says, 'The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.' "

"The state attorney general's office agrees that Rhode Islanders have the right to keep and bear arms in their homes, in their businesses and on their land. But it disagrees with the assertion -- made by the National Rifle Association and others -- that the right to bear arms includes a right to carry a handgun off a person's premises."

The National Coalition for Gun Control says semi-automatic handguns need to be completely removed from the community.

Coalition chairwoman Samantha Lee says the use of a stolen semi-automatic Glock pistol in a gunfight at a Hurstville carpark in Sydney on Sunday shows that legal handguns can easily become illegal guns.

Ms Lee says the ownership of such guns outside the police force should be banned.

"We question why anyone within Australia requires a semi-automatic handgun for civilian use," she said.

"The high increase or number of guns moving into the illegal market actually fuels the number of hand guns into the illegal market.
