If you get past the locks, the lights, the alarms and the 160-pound Great Dane (its name is Henry), you can expect to be shot on sight.

"Of course, I will call 911, but I won't wait for the police to arrive," the Columbus-area woman told state lawmakers Wednesday morning. "I, along with my firearm, am my first line of defense. Crime scene investigators are great photographers, but I prefer my pictures without blood and bruises."

Wickham was one of several proponents to testify before the Senate's Criminal Justice Committee in favor of SB 184, sponsored by Republican Steve Buerher from Delta in northwestern Ohio.

AK: Right to bear arms clearly an individual freedom

This column was first printed in the News-Miner in 1976. Still relevant with the Supreme Court recently accepting a case involving the individual right to own a handgun, it is reprinted today at Mr. Nava’s request.

It seems ironic that in this bicentennial year, as we celebrate the 200th anniversary of our own countrymen beginning a revolution which set this country free with private arms, we should now be listening to those who are advocating the removal of firearms from the public.

The founders of the Constitution were explicit in the Second Amendment: “The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

A coalition of mayors against illegal guns, an organization co-founded by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, has sent a survey to all the presidential candidates. The coalition says it wont endorse a candidate but would publicize the responses on its Web site. It counts more than 250 mayors across the country as members. "Members of Mayors Against Illegal Guns are committed to both respecting the rights of gun owners while cracking down on illegal guns," Bloomberg said in a statement released Sunday.

IL: Cook County Board Poised to Shut Down Cabela's Superstore

Just weeks after its gala grand opening, the Cabela's superstore in Hoffman Estates, IL is facing closure by the Cook County (IL) Board. This impending action stems from a pair of proposed county ordinances prohibiting the retail sale of firearms at a location 15 miles or less from any other federally licensed firearm dealer. The proposals further prohibit retail sale of firearms within one mile of any school, church, place of worship, nursing home, homeless shelter, public housing, or military installation. With respect to these restrictions, Cabela's Hoffman Estates store loses on all counts - as does every other federally-licensed gun dealer in Cook County.

Senate confirmation of Michael Sullivan as director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has been put on hold amid controversy over the agencys treatment of gun dealers. Sullivans confirmation was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Since 2002, 85% of American firearm manufacturers have been forced to close their doors, said Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.). Shooting Sports Retailer Magazine says the number of revocations of licenses is up nearly six times from 2001-2006.

Gun Owners of America went on record against the appointment, though the National Rifle Association allegedly has not been as aggressive and is seen by some as lukewarm about this matter.

Will new Rambo movie lead to Urban Warfare? According to Stallone it will!

With the upcoming release of Rambo, it is important to remember the Hypocrisy of Sylvester Stallone. Judge Dredd, who is a big supporter of the Brady Campaign, has stated:

"It [2nd Amendment] has to be stopped, and someone really has to go on the line, a certain dauntless political figure, and say, Its ending, its over, all bets are off. Its not 200 years ago, we dont need this anymore, and the rest of the world doesnt have it. Why should we?"

Another quote from Stallone that I found interesting with his upcoming film is this:

"I know we use guns in films," but insisted the time has come "to be a little more accountable and realize that this is an escalating problem thats eventually going to lead to, I think, urban warfare."

In Mayor Michael R. Bloombergs campaign to remove illegal guns from New York Citys streets, he sued 27 out-of-state gun dealerships last year over what he said were illegal sales. Most agreed to settle, while others chose to take their chances in court. But here, in this town of 48,000 where Julia Roberts was born, the fight has become deeply personal. Jay Wallace, who owns Adventure Outdoors, one of the major gun distributors in the area and a defendant in one of the citys lawsuits, is countersuing Mr. Bloomberg, alleging fraud, slander and libel.

400 miles away in Washington, President Bush and his staff were hammering out Sullivans nomination as director of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

His nomination has cleared numerous hurdles, but he is still one final U.S. Senate vote away from formal approval as director of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives director, where he would preside over 5,000 employees and a $1 billion budget.

If that happens - and, given the support he has from Massachusetts Democratic U.S. Sens. Edward Kennedy and John Kerry, it is expected

As the twig is bent, so grows the tree. A sign bearing these severe but hopeful words marks the entrance to Cooper Village, a residential treatment facility for teenagers along the rural northern edge of Omaha.
Robert A. Hawkins, as a ward of the State of Nebraska, received extensive care at Cooper private psychotherapy, family therapy, drug counseling from 2003 to 2005.
It was his longest stop in a five-year journey through a maze of juvenile-services programs that began when he was 13 and was charged with making homicidal threats toward his stepmother.

Voters should press presidential candidates for their views on assault weapons in light of Wednesday's shopping-mall massacre in Omaha, a national gun-control advocate said Thursday. Most Democratic candidates support reinstating a federal assault-weapons ban that expired in 2004. Most Republican candidates oppose reinstating the ban, saying it was ineffective.

California hunting regulators Friday broadened a prohibition on lead bullets scheduled to take effect July 1, adding .22-caliber ammunition to the ban. The new rules will apply only in those areas where the endangered California condor roams generally, the coastal mountains from Monterey south to Ventura County and in the southern Sierra.

In recent years, massacres have occurred in the most benign settings, confronting Americans with a troubling choice move toward airport-style security in a wide range of public places or fatalistically accept the slim chance that tragedy could strike anywhere in a free society.

They offer only a troubling false dichotomy. Can anyone think of another scenario for a free society?

It's just a sign.

They have one painted on the entrance to our local Blockbuster, and there's another on the glass front door of my doctor's office, as well. The notice usually reads "No Firearms Permitted" or something to that effect, and is often accompanied by a graphic: the outline of a pistol or revolver superimposed by a big red European "forbidden" symbol.

As surely as a baseball cap turned around backwards, it is a sign of unadulterated stupidity at work. It might even be funny, if it weren't responsible for the sudden, violent deaths of eight innocent individuals this week at a shopping mall in Omaha, Nebraska, not to mention countless others in the recent past and many more in the future.

The .22 Rimfire for Survival

The little .22LR round is probably the world's most available, yet underrated cartridge. Familiar to anyone with any knowledge of firearms and ammo, the little .22LR is often overlooked by many shooters as only a plinking, training or small game round. Despite the lack of power when compared to other rounds, the .22 should be given careful consideration by survival planners.

State officials on Friday expanded a ban on toxic lead ammunition to protect the California condor, a rare bird that repeatedly has been poisoned and died after eating dead animals left behind by hunters. Meeting in Sacramento, the California Fish and Game Commission took steps to implement AB 821, a controversial bill by Assemblyman Pedro Nava, D-Santa Barbara, that was adopted in October. And the commission went further, adding more ammunition to the banned list to effectively cover more kinds of hunting.

"...This is not an oath of loyalty to the United States. The government of Missouri has been, in fact, hostile to the United States. This is matter of history. Being in armed hostility to this hostile State government was an act of loyalty to the United States: an act not to be punished, but to be rewarded.

"The loyal citizens of the State were obliged to array themselves against its government; they did so; they took up arms against it; they seized its camp and overthrew its forces. Had it not been for this act of hostility the State might have been drawn into the abyss of secession. It was, therefore, an act which was not only lawful but which was required of the citizen by his allegiance to the United States...."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
In the end, more than freedom, they wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life, and they lost it all security, comfort, and freedom. When the Athenians finally wanted not to give to society but for society to give to them, when the freedom they wished for most was freedom from responsibility then Athens ceased to be free and was never free again. EDWARD GIBBON [On ancient Athens]
