Crime can happen anywhere and at any time. Last month, a woman and her female friend were attacked in front of a house while they waited in their car for a Friendsgiving party to start. This violent armed carjacking did not go the way the robbers planned.

The story started when the female driver picked up her friend. From her friends house, they drove to the location of a Friendsgiving party. They were early, so the two women sat in the car and waited.A car quickly stopped in front of them so they could not move forward and drive away.

Americans are showing they approve of the U.S. Supreme Courts ruling in favor of more individual rights for law-abiding Americans in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, instead of siding with more restrictions.

U.S. Supreme Court Justices arent elected. They dont face approval or rejection by voters at the ballot box. They are insulated from facing political pressure to rule a certain way on the cases they hear. But the Highest Court in the Land has garnered the approval of a large majority of Americans following their landmark decision last summer expanding Second Amendment protections.

In November, a federal judge in the Western District of Texasruled that this law violates the Second Amendment to the Constitution, because no such gun restrictions existed when the country was founded. But keeping guns out of the hands of domestic abusers saves lives, advocates say, and academic researchers say studies support that claim.

April Zeoli is an associate professor of public health at the University of Michigan. She coauthored an article for The Conversation about the case and joined Texas Standard to discuss. Listen to the interview above or read the transcript below.

By definition, laws are for law-abiding citizens. The law that makes murder illegal covers any murder with any weapons. Since that law doesnt prevent murders from happening, no gun control law will work better and protect people better. There is no law that could have prevented any of the recent mass shootings. The mentally ill or outlaws do not care about laws. They get guns by all means and use guns as they wish.

Local residents and officials are weighing in on a proposition to lower the age to carry firearms in the state to 18.

House Bill 1001 was authored by State Rep. Jim Olsen, R-Roland, and would amend the Oklahoma Statutes on unlawful carry. Under current law, individuals 21 and older may carry without a permit, unless otherwise disqualified from possessing a firearm. Active-duty military personnel and veterans over age 18 are also allowed to carry.

Eighteen-year-olds are often recognized as adults, and so they have the right to freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, and so, they should also have the right to keep and bear arms like the rest of us do," Olsen said.

I spent many years patrolling on swing or graveyard shiftslots of nighttime police workand I experimented with numerous flashlight techniques. In my experience, there are three that anyone who carries a flashlight and a handgun must know. There are certainly other viable techniques, but one of the things I like about these three is they can be employed with any size flashlight. And these techniques work regardless of flashlight design; theyre not dependent on whether the light has a side switch or a tailcap switch. Heres a brass tacks approach thats focused on the big three: Harries technique, FBI technique and neck index.

House Republican Leader Matt Windschitl of Missouri Valley has been involved in gun-related issues since he was elected to the House in 2006.

There are multiple different things weve been trying to get done to restore freedoms in Iowa and weve not been able to get across the finish line on some of those things, Windschitl said this afternoon.

Portuguese police recorded just 85 attempted homicides by various means, including shootings, in all of 2021.

This news and recent gun tragedies again sparked a personal reflection on what makes the U.S. so deadly different from other developed nations about guns. I came to a simple conclusion: The U.S. has a gun lust that defies comprehension.

Illinois State Rifle Association Executive Director Richard Pearson told The Center Square that Illinois needs to do a better job enforcing its current laws to avoid events like the suburban Highland Park mass shooting where seven people were killed and dozens injured during a July 4 parade.

The police knew the shooter was a problem, and they did nothing, Pearson said. We have red flag laws. We have clear and present danger laws, both of which should have been implemented, and this guy would have never gotten a FOID card.

The 2021 State of the State report from the Texas Council on Family Violence (TCFV) outlines key domestic violence statistics from the past two years. The report shows the number of domestic violence calls law enforcement responded to that involved a gun increased by 92.4%.

Texas law prohibits someone subject to a protective order for abuse from possessing a firearm except for law enforcement officers. But Breall Baccus from TCFV said that people with protective orders dont always have their firearms taken away.

The bill sought to prohibit universities from disciplining students for speech, with some exceptions.

It was among four laws passed by Republicans in 2021 that have been struck down for overstepping the Board of Regents authority. Hopkins suggested his referendum could also be crafted to grant the Legislature oversight power of the board.

Hot-button social issues that Republicans have focused on nationally feature prominently in the list of requests. Five specifically address gun rights, the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitutionor constitutional carry which typically refers to eliminating limits on a persons right to carry firearms, concealed or openly.

The Bruen decision does not explicitly address the workplace. Nor does the ruling prevent businesses from enforcing their own restrictions on the possession and carrying of firearms at their facilities. But the court's decision recognizing a constitutional right to bear arms in public for self-defense may provide a foundation for subsequent challenges to private restrictions, including workplace bans on guns. Whether any such challenges will be filed and bear fruit remains to be seen.

Handguns represent the largest percentage of firearms sold annually, followed by rifles, but according to a National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers (NASGW) report released last month, shotgun sales are claiming more market share. In 2019, the last complete year before the pandemic and social unrest suspended normalcy, 8.5 percent of the National Instant Criminal Background System Checks conducted by the FBI were related to the sale of a shotgun. During the first nine months of 2022, by comparison, that figure was up to 9.7 percent.

The top Republican congressman on the House Judiciary Committee could go so far as to issue subpoenas next Congress in connection to the FBI using secret powers to strip people of their gun rights.

The FBI has used internal forms to waive away the gun rights of at least 23 people without congressional approval, the Washington Examiner reported. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), who is poised to become chairman of the Judiciary Committee when the House GOP takes a majority in January, said in an interview with the Washington Examiner that "there is nothing off the table" in terms of holding the bureau accountable for becoming "political."

Two bills were introduced to the Michigan House of Representatives Dec.1 that would extend control and regulation over certain firearms in the state.

House Bill 5644 would prohibit the manufacturing, possession, purchase or sales of what would be considered consider an assault weapon, while HB 5646 would prohibit people from openly carrying shotguns and rifles with exceptions in certain situations.

"This was 100% expected," State Rep. Phil Green said. "Democrats have run on the Michael Bloomberg stance on eliminating guns. It is not a surprise, it is the national narrative."

Lawrence also confessed her concerns about raising a son in the US, speaking out on gun violence in schools.

Im raising a little boy who is going to go to school one day. Guns are the number-one cause of death for children in the United States. And people are still voting for politicians who receive money from the NRA, she said.

If youre wondering about the legal status of Measure 114, the laws enforcement is (we hope temporarily) on hold by the state courts, Rosenblum commented in a tweet. There is a hearing in Harney County next week and we will continue to defend the constitutionality of this voter-passed gun safety law.

Another reader noted that the difficulty of passing amendments is to guard against temporal generation priorities. In other words, to protect our governance structure from mob rule.

The most popular recommended amendments amongst our readers were:

Elimination of the Electoral College and allowance of the popular vote to decide elections.
Amending the Second Amendment by banning weapons of war for private use or repealing it.
Addressing campaign finance, lobbying and the outsized influence of corporate and the ultra wealthy to level the playing field for everyday Americans.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
