"Maryland State Police Superintendent Edward T. Norris has been charged with illegally spending about $20,000 in Baltimore police funds while he was the city's top officer to cover personal expenses, including romantic liaisons with several women, according to a federal indictment unsealed yesterday."
"Norris, 43, who is married, promptly resigned and is expected to appear in U.S. District Court for his initial hearing today on charges that he conspired to misapply funds, misapplied funds and made a false statement on a mortgage application three years ago."
"Among the revelations in the indictment about Norris' spending from the obscure departmental expense account:"
Norris made repeated trips to New York, where he had romantic encounters with women while staying at trendy hotels and dining at expensive restaurants.
The former commissioner bought personal items - from money clips to clothes, including a leather jacket for $371.61 - and stocked hundreds of dollars worth of liquor in his home.

FULL TEXT BELOW... ------- COVINGTON, La. -- "The trial of former Abita Springs Police Chief James Lala was over before it began Thursday in state court in Covington."
"Lala faces charges of malfeasance and public bribery for allegedly selling scores of police commissions to ordinary citizens, part of a corruption scandal that has shaken the six-member police force. He has pleaded guilty to the charges."
"Lala resigned as police chief in August, four days after two other members of his police force were arrested. Lt. Benny Garcia Jr. and Lt. Panagiotis Kondylis were booked with malfeasance and other charges. They are accused of using their police credentials to buy restricted weapons such as assault weapons and selling them on the street."
"Their trial dates have not been set."
"In November, voters in Abita Springs decided to change the police chief's post to an appointive position rather than an elected one."
KABA NOTE:
The Important Thing to Remember Here: Before these guys were caught, they were sworn law enforcement officers who, we are told, deserved the utmost respect -- pillars of the community to whom everyone should have been looking up. And if you had suggested any different, even if based on your own personal experience with these individuals, you'd have been labeled a "cop hater" who had "authority problems" -- or even an "anti-government extremist". So stated Joe Waldron, executive director of the CCRKBA following Tuesday night's passage of a concealed carry bill by the Legislature. The bill reportedly addresses law enforcement concerns, and certainly has the overwhelming support of lawmakers, who passed the measure in both houses with what may be a veto-proof majority.

FULL TEXT BELOW:
Police will continue investigations this morning into a series of shots fired in Sydney's south-west yesterday afternoon.
Police say shots where exchanged between two groups on Australis Avenue in the suburb of Wattle Grove about 6:00pm AEDT.
Spokeswoman Michelle Stone says police do not yet know exactly how many shots were fired.
"A number of the shots hit two nearby homes, residents were home in one but they were uninjured, the other home was vacant," she said.
"Police are waiting to interview a number of witnesses to further their inquiries."
Police forensics will this morning go over a car found in a nearby street.

"FOUR Port Macquarie men alleged to have used meat cleavers and pistols to assault a man at a Willawarrin property late on Wednesday will appear before Port Macquarie Local Court today."
"Police said the men travelled from Port Macquarie to the property, about 30 kilometres west of Kempsey, where they allegedly became involved in an argument over a horse."
"Wielding the knives and weapons, the men allegedly assaulted the property owner causing cuts and bruises to his head."
"The men ran away and the victim, a Willawarrin man, called police. Kempsey detectives stopped the men travelling in a car, five kilometres along Armidale Rd." ...

"YOUNGSTERS in Middleton can now benefit from the teachings of a newly arrived martial arts expert."
"Members of the recently opened Doryoku Karate Club learn effective self-defence techniques and improve their academic work and household responsibilities through the Good Citizenship Programme devised by the club's Sensai, Irfan Ansari." [they teach them to shoot?]

"Gun dealers William Greenwood and his son Mitchell knew they were probably helping criminals but 'turned a blind eye' to the possibility, it was alleged."
"The pair, a jury at Derby Crown Court was told, were 'eventually caught in the act' by detectives and TV programme The Cook Report."
"Anthony Russell QC, prosecuting, said the Greenwoods legally offered deactivated weapons for sale when they advertised their family business, RIFLE, of Little Eaton, near Derby in gun magazines. But when asked he alleged, they would offer 'starter kits' that would enable customers to convert their buys back into usable condition."

"Where is your voice?"
"Will you simply shuffle to the polls once again on Election Day and vote for yet another tyrant who will use the Constitution to wipe his derriere?"
"Where is your outrage?"
"Will you read the newspapers, watch TV reports and read Internet news, stew in your own juices at the demise of our freedoms, but refuse to write a single letter or make a single phone call to help restore your rights?"
"Where is your heart?"
"Will you watch as your fellow Americans get victimized and terrorized by their own government and sigh with relief that its not you?"
"I have a sneaking suspicion that a vast number of you reading this today will do just that. Im saddened by it, but Ive seen no proof to the contrary. My heart aches to see so much apathy on behalf of my fellow Americans. I can only hope that those of you who rage and bleed and tear your heart out at the injustice that is perpetrated on our countrymen daily by those who have been entrusted with the sacred duty of upholding our freedoms keep your vision, keep a close watch on your future, and steel your resolve."

"The attacks on our World Trade Center have brought unimaginable grief to thousands of American families. They have also ignited a keen awareness of our vulnerability. And, the dereliction of federal government has become evident by its inability or refusal to provide adequate nationwide defenses from foreign aggression. Whether the appropriate charge is criminal negligence or high treason, there is no question that the people have been betrayed."

Some of the quotes in this heavily one-sided editorial suggest that Cincinnati is on the verge of more racially motivated riots:
"Beaten to death by Cincinnati cops This was murder"
"In April 2001, Cincinnati was rocked by a three-day rebellion after a cop murdered 19-year-old Timothy Thomas, a young Black man pursued because of outstanding traffic violations."
"On December 5, activists from the Cincinnati Black United Front, Concerned Citizens for Justice, the International Socialist Organization and Cincinnati Progressive Action gathered at District 1 Police Headquarters to demand Streichers firing."
"Another Black man is dead," he said. "We cant trust the police."
Chanting "Hidey, hidey, ho, Streicher, its time to go," activists placed his eviction notice on the front door of the building. ...

"Prosecutors played a videotaped confession for jurors Thursday in the murder trial of Auroran David Salazar in which the admitted gang member told investigators he fired his gun at Leo Griffin Jr. in a moment of panic."
"Salazar on the tape is heard telling police he shot at the West Aurora High School student because he thought the teenager was with members of a rival gang standing on a porch and feared Griffin was reaching for a weapon as Salazar approached."

"New legislation passed by Brazil's Congress will give one of the world's most homicidal nations the toughest gun laws in South America. The hitch is that the law would cover legal gun sales, not widespread black-market arms dealing."
"The new measure raises the minimum age for gun ownership in Brazil to 25 from 21, severely restricts carrying handguns in public and requires background checks of potential gun buyers. It makes cross-border gunrunning a felony and -- most controversially -- calls for a referendum on Oct. 2, 2005, to determine whether to ban handgun sales in Brazil."
------- Typical of the "gun bans are good" mentality. Admit that the law will only affect the good people who'll obey the laws, then pass it off as a "hitch".
If the cuddly "gun-free" utopia of Britain is any indication, expect Brazil's gun-related crime to skyrocket. |
