PHILADELPHIA - December 7, 2013 (WPVI) -- A dozen more cases involving a former Philadelphia narcotics officer are being dismissed by the district attorney.
A judge had already overturned 53 convictions based on testimony from Jeffrey Walker.
Walker was arrested in May. An FBI sting allegedly caught him plotting to rip off drug dealers.
Submitters note: The headline is somewhat misleading. The convictions dismissed were cases where the discredited cop's testimony resulted in convictions of miscreants that were most likely guilty as sin. |

Researchers have developed and opensourced a low-cost 3D metal printer capable of printing metal tools and objects with cost under 1,000.
A team of researchers led by Associate Professor Joshua Pearce at the Michigan Technological University developed the firmware and the plans for the printer and have made it available freely to anyone interested in taking this further. Built with cost of just 913, the open source 3D printer is definitely a huge leap forward as the starting price of commercial counterparts is 300,000. |

The biggest gun-control fight next year is shaping up as dueling ballot initiatives in the state of Washington, a continent away from the Connecticut elementary school where a mass shooting ignited a national push for tougher firearms laws.
Its the only place in the nation where both sides are seeking to use the ballot box at the same time. Its one of a handful of areas where national activists will press for gun-control laws after a measure to expand background checks on firearms buyers failed in the U.S. Senate. Other battlegrounds will include states known for hunting or ranching, including Minnesota, Oregon and Nevada, according to interviews with advocates on both sides. |

In 2008, Brian L. Frye published the seminal paper on the history of United States v. Miller, the single most important second amendment case before U.S. V. Heller.
While Miller no longer holds as much significance in second amendment cases as it used to, the way in which the government manipulated the case in order to deprive American citizens of their second amendment rights deserves detailed study. |

California's attorney general failed to convince a federal judge that a law requiring gun buyers to wait 10 days to receive their firearms is a justified burden on Second Amendment rights.
Nonprofits Calguns Foundation and the Second Amendment Foundation joined three gun owners in suing California Attorney General Kamala Harris and the Department of Justice over the state's so-called "waiting period law."

An informal survey of residents around town on a below-freezing December afternoon found that people willing to share their opinions on Saturdays recall election are few and far between.
About 1 of every 4 people knew a little something about the issue that petitioners had enough signatures to force a recall election for four of the five Town Council members, that the election is Dec. 14, and that it had something to do with guns but many were reluctant to speak, saying Exeter was a small town and they didnt want to get phone calls from people with differing opinions. |

The letters came from the Second Amendment Foundation, a prominent pro-gun legal-defense organization, as part of a quiet but mounting campaign to strike down local gun laws across the country. So far, SAF has sent out about 425 letters to cities, towns, and counties in Maryland, Oregon, Virginia, and Washington and has announced plans to target hundreds more local laws. |

We all want the right to survive, despite the evil that others would do upon the innocent. Those who oppose robust legal protections for people who act in defense of themselves and their families just cant seem to figure out that our society is safer when the victim is not prohibited from justly responding to an unlawful attack. The practical reality is that nobody has time to stop and think about the legal protections afforded or denied to them once they are attacked. A person who defends their life from an attack usually has only seconds to survive and will do whatever is necessary to live. |

Nothing about that morning makes sense to Thomas' mother, Tonya Greenwood. She doesn't understand why Quardious (pronounced KWA-dare-yee-us), slipped out of the house after midnight on a Friday morning or why the 20-year-old was at the Williams' home, much less anywhere near Eric Williams' truck. If it was her son's plan to break into cars, she's baffled as to why he would target a neighborhood where so many prominent, and powerful, Jackson citizens such as Hinds County Sheriff Tyrone Lewis and Jackson Mayor Chokwe Lumumba reside. |

The Arms Trade Treaty threatens our Second Amendment rights by including firearms owned by law-abiding citizens in its jurisdiction. The treaty urges record keeping of firearm sales and transfers for a minimum of ten years. Data kept on imported firearms is a de-facto registry of law-abiding firearms owners, which is a violation of federal law. Even worse, the Arms Trade Treaty could be construed to require such a registry to be made available to foreign governments. |

A man who sued police in Colorado Springs, Colo., for violating his Second Amendment rights has reportedly won more than $23,000 from the city, as local officers apparently did not know it was legal to open carry firearms at public parks.
The saga of James Sorensen began in July 2012 at a homosexual-pride festival, just one day after the shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., that left 12 people dead and 70 others injured.
He was openly sporting a handgun on his hip, which prompted police to take him into custody.
Sorensens arrest was caught on camera by his partner, who documented the discussion with officers who at one point threatened Sorensen with violence. |

Sierra Bullets, a manufacturer in Sedalia, Mo., in business since 1947, said in a Nov. 1 statement that the smelter plant closure was not likely to have a negative impact on operations in the near term, but it very well could in the future.
Sierra plant engineer Darren Leskiw said: "Our supply should not be in jeopardy and we do not anticipate any changes in our supply chain at this time. Could the lack of primary lead create a little more demand for recycled lead? Sure, but how much is unknown. Could this increase in demand also create an increase in price? Sure, but again, by how much is unknown at this time. In short, we do not see any reason for alarm." |

The homeowner, 34-year-old Antione Garret, and his girlfriend were awakened by the sound of glass shattering just before 5 a.m., according to a report by Toledo News Now. Garret described the frightening situation as being like something from out of a movie as he walked downstairs to find a man crawling through the front window of his home.
However, Garret was armed with a handgun and fired several shots at the intruder, who was later identified by police as 21-year-old Randy Estrada. Estrada quickly escaped back out of the window from which he had entered and ran away. |

Discussing the possibility of amending the U.S. Constitution drew approximately 100 legislators from 32 states, according to an Idaho lawmaker who attended the event. He described it as a great start. The lawmakers gathered in Virginia at the Mount Vernon estate of President George Washington.
But, he added, a long process still lies ahead before amendments can even be drafted.
It went very well, its a great start, said Sen. Marv Hagedorn, R-Meridian. The most exciting thing for me is that we have a good plan of action. This is not going to happen quickly, and were moving forward with full transparency. Hagedorn was the only member of Idahos Legislature to attend the gathering. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.... We've been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people. Well, if no one among us is capable of government himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else? All of us together, in and out of government, must bear the burden. The solutions we seek must be equitable, with no one group singled out to pay a higher price. Ronald Reagan |
