With growing crime, it is more dangerous to live in California each year. After failure like that, California politicians call for higher taxes and more gun control. Why would politicians propose more of the prescriptions that failed in the past?

That is a fascinating question. Lets see if we can help.

As 2018 draws to a close, a report at Vox.com citing data from the US Naval Postgraduate School says this year saw 94 incidents of school gun violence, but is the way such incidents are defined creating a false impression of widespread school shootings?

According to Vox, this project to track school gun violence uses a database that counts each and every instance a gun is brandished, is fired, or a bullet hits school property for any reason, regardless of the number of victims, time of day, or day of week. That would mean incidents that really have nothing to do with school operations, students or staff are included.

A bill that would tighten storage requirements for Oregons gun owners is headed to the Oregon State Legislature in 2019. Titled the Cindy Yuille and Steve Forsyth Act, this bill would require gun owners to safely store and lock a firearm when it is not in use, and when it is being transferred to another person; report a lost or stolen gun with 24 hours; supervise children under 18 at all times when they are handling firearms; and use locks and containers approved by the state attorney general. Failing to follow these rules would result in a fine.

The November midterm elections will bring a wave of new faces into Congress 100 new House members who make up a class with more diversity and more women than ever before. It is also more pro-gun control. Thats a byproduct of the new Democratic majority creating what advocates call a gun-sense majority. According to the group Giffords: Courage to Fight Gun Violence, 39 seats that belonged to politicians backed by the NRA were flipped by candidates who support gun control.

Weve gotta admit, we are impressed (not in a good way) with the level of gymnastics it took for Vox to make this particular argument about gun violence. Truth be told, youd have to be really, really desperate to exploit the tragedy of suicide to push this argument but hey, what can we say, Vox is gonna Vox.

I visited Heaven on Earth for waterfowlers and inshore fishing enthusiasts last week. If you are a duck and goose hunter and a striped bass fisherman, you owe it to yourself to visit southern Louisiana or Mississippi some late fall or early winter, once the cold chases the stripers out of our range. I visited this past week and even with a stiff breeze and shifting conditions that had the fish a little unsettled, they lived up to their billing at every turn.
