Mexican cartels are taking advantage of U.S. gun laws to buy thousands of weapons that are being used in an escalating drug war that has claimed more than 31,000 lives since late 2006, experts and law enforcement officials tell NBC News.
U.S. firearms agents estimate that around 80 percent of the weapons used by Mexican drug traffickers come from the United States, where cartel leaders are hiring Americans with clean records to make the purchases for them.
During his visit to the United States in May, Mexican President Felipe Calderon urged a joint session of Congress to ban assault weapons that are showing up in his country.

Washington County deputies say a security company owner and two employees have been arrested following a burglary at a church school.
The sheriff's office says laptops and other electronic devices have been stolen several times this year from Oregon Episcopal School, but there were no signs of forced entry.
The church had hired Beaverton's Northwest Merchant Patrol to check the school after hours. On Saturday, a school employee stayed overnight to watch the patrol.
The school worker spotted the company's owner, 27-year-old Stirling Anderson, of Wilsonville, and one of his employees, 21-year-old Sheldon McMillan, of Beaverton, leaving with what appeared to be stolen property.
Deputies then arrested Anderson, McMillan and a thi |

A Scottsbluff High School student expelled for possessing a firearm on school grounds had reportedly used the weapon for hunting purposes. There was no intent to cause harm to anyone, officials say.
A female student reported to her boyfriend that she had seen the weapon and ammunition in a 17-year-old male student's vehicle and school officials were alerted.
The weapon has been described to me as a shotgun, Scottsbluff Public Schools Superintendent Rick Myles said.
Scotts Bluff Police Captain Brian Wasson confirmed that police confiscated the weapon, which he said had been placed under the seat of a vehicle. Wasson said the student told police that he used the weapon for hunting and had left it in his vehicle. |

Four pre-school children and their teacher have been freed by French police after being held hostage by a sword-wielding teenager. Elite officers negotiated the safe release of the youngsters from the Charles Fourier nursery in Besancon, eastern France, and the 17-year-old hostage-taker is in custody. The troubled teen - who is said to suffer from psychological problems - originally took 20 children hostage, aged between four and six years old, at about 8.15am local time (7.15 GMT). But 14 of them were released two hours later, escorted by their teaching assistant who then returned to the classroom as ordered by the hostage-taker.

Possible amendments to gun laws that are intended to ease restrictions on owning and carrying small arms have faced much criticism in Turkey.
The bill, currently in subcommittee at Parliament, ensures easier access to guns, allowing people to own as many as five weapons and the right to carry two of them at one time. Some civil society organizations underline that such regulations will lead to more crime and will threaten lives, especially those of women and children, but supporters of the amendments argue that easing procedures to obtain a license for weapons will make it easier to track them. |

Its the holiday that got away.
Wednesday is the 219th anniversary of the ratification of the Bill of Rights, a critical turning point in the history of this country and one that transformed this nation forever. Still, you wont find any Bill of Rights greeting cards in local stores.
Its not that Americans are short on patriotism. In fact, we celebrate Veterans Day, Constitution Day, Flag Day, Memorial Day, Washingtons Birthday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Independence Day.
Ed.: Wednesday is Bill of Rights day, something I'm sure our readers know, and will celebrate! |

The Nevada County Sheriff's Office received the 911 call at 9:54 p.m. Friday night from the alleged shooter stating the other man had broken into his residence on the 12000 block of Pinewoods Road to attack him with a hammer. He then shot the man in the chest at close range, said Sgt. Stephen Tripp.
...
Both the shooter and another man were in the residence at the time, and the shooter used a handgun in self defense, Tripp said.
We're not filing any charges, we classify this as a justifiable homicide in defense of his life or someone else's life, Tripp said.

It may soon be against the law to carry a phony gun in Moorhead.
On a vote of 5-2 on Monday, Moorhead City Council members gave initial approval to a revised city ordinance that prohibits people from carrying facsimile weapons in public places.
The revision needs one more reading to become effective, and officials said that could happen Jan. 10.

Students at Texas State University in San Marcos have a more immediate, and constitutional, solution in mind to the problem of campus violence. By a vote of 24 to 10, the student government passed a resolution supporting a bill before the Texas legislature that would authorize anyone with a concealed carry license to carry a concealed handgun on campus. (As reported previously for The New American, HB 86, which was introduced by Rep. David Simpson [R-Dist. 7] would permit such "campus carry" throughout the Lone Star state if it becomes law.)

San Diego Countys system of issuing permits to carry concealed weapons does not violate the constitutional rights of gun owners, a federal judge in San Diego has ruled.
But lawyers for gun owners who sued in federal court challenging the system vowed an immediate appeal of the decision issued by U.S. District Judge Irma E. Gonzalez on Friday.
The lawsuit was filed in 2009 by a group of seven gun owners and the California Rifle and Pistol Association Foundation, a gun ownership advocacy group, contending that in the wake of two recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings the countys standards for granting permits were illegal. |

Thats a mighty big if, and it depends on ignoring the entire context of colonial life. The founders didnt envision government on any level being able to utterly secure public safety, not even in the cities. Families needed guns for self-defense, and not just on the frontier from animals and hostile Native Americans and French and Spanish explorers, either. Then, as now, if families waited for the local constabulary to protect them from thieves and marauders, theyd find themselves either dead or homeless in short order. |

In the U.S. House of Representatives, 225 of 262 NRA-PVF endorsed candidates won their elections. Lawyers for the District of Columbia residents who successfully challenged the city's ban on handguns were in court today defending their request for nearly $3.13 million in legal fees and costs.
Alan Gura, the lead attorney for the plaintiffs, urged a Washington federal trial judge to award the team the prevailing market value for attorneys who handle complex federal litigation. Gura called the fee request reasonable, citing his efficiency and his overall success in the case. |
