"When Captain John Smith wrote about the abundance of game in Virginia in 1608, America's deer population was probably about the same as it is today, roughly 25 million."

"The enormous numbers allowed colonial settlers to make deer a staple in their diet by killing them with the muzzleloading flintlock firearms available in those days."

"The resurgence of the national deer herd during the past three decades is a major reason for the growing resurgence of muzzleloader hunting nearly 400 years later. But Captain John would do a double-take if he got a look at the guns used by black powder hunters in 2003."

"At first, it looks pretty much like any other lottery a scantily clad woman with peroxide-blond hair dips her hand into a bowl full of tickets, smiles as she plucks one out, and the winning number is flashed on television screens."

"But this draw is no ordinary one; all the players have to surrender a gun in return for a ticket and a chance at the prizes: a car, a motor scooter, a computer, mountain bikes, cellphones and even sewing machines."

"The game, begun Nov. 1, is the latest tactic to try to reduce the number of weapons in this former Yugoslav republic, where ethnic Albanian rebels and Macedonian security forces narrowly averted civil war in 2001 and peace remains tentative." ...

"Twelve years after a $450,000 consulting study recommended changes in the policy, the generous number of sick days remains in place -- and Chicago police officers take full advantage of it. They racked up 254,580 medical days last year -- or 18.5 days for each of the 13,699 sworn officers."

"Hold on to your barstool. The nanny statists are coming again. After considerable success with tobacco, where they've managed to restrict advertising, impose mammoth excise taxes, and strip tobacco companies of the class action defenses afforded to most every other defendant, the 'public health' activists are now coming for your beer."

"There's a rhetorical tool in the world of debate called reductio ad absurdium. You take your opponent's argument to its most extreme conclusion -- the more absurd, the better. If done right, your audience will see that the other guy's argument can be applied to achieve an end that most people would find laughable, and you'll have your opponent backpedaling."

"Unfortunately, reductio arguments don't work so well anymore. That's because we live in an age that's becoming increasingly comfortable with absurdity."

Missouri's concealed-weapons law, which would allow most Missouri residents over 23 who clear a background check and undergo specified training requirements to carry a concealed firearm, was passed by the state legislature this past fall over a veto by Governor Bob Holden. "The Village Board unanimously passed an ordinance Thursday night that states people can only shoot paintball guns on private property, with the permission of the property owner. Violators will be ticketed between $150 and $750 for the first offense and between $250 and $750 for the second."

"Police Chief Brian Fengel said his department has received more than 40 separate complaints of paintball vandalism and damage to property in the last few months."

"Over the 10-year span, a total of 8,192 guns have been collected."

"The lower total of 150 guns on Dec. 6 was attributed to the heavy snowfall the day before, said program spokesman Nathaniel Glosser."

"Those who turned in a handgun received a $50 gift certificate and those who turned in a rifle received a $25 certificate."

" 'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in a rather scornful tone, 'it means just what I choose it to mean neither more nor less.' "
Lewis Carroll, "Through the Looking Glass"

"When Lewis Carroll wrote those famous words, known since to many generations of young people, it is highly unlikely he had in mind their application to the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act signed into law by President George W. Bush on March 27, 2002. But he might as well have."

"The use of the word 'Reform' to describe this monstrously complex piece of federal legislation that adds mountains of red tape to an already cumbersome federal election process, and in so doing tramples on the First Amendment to the Constitution, would indeed make Humpty Dumpty proud. Only in the eye of Sen. John McCain, Arizona Republican and the legislation's primary sponsor, and in the best tradition of Humpty's philosophy, could this law be deemed with a straight face to 'reform' anything."

-------
Now journalists of every stripe cannot be trusted because they can criticize our government masters in the weeks before an election and we cannot. Unless of course they are actively trying to repeal/strike down this attack on our free speech [Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002 (BCRA), popularly known as "McCain-Feingold"].

"Somebody's lying."

"The question is, is it the man accused of mass murder, the guard accused of beating him or the guard known for leaving his post?"

"No one emerged looking good during the first day of trial for Thomas Wilson, a Cook County sheriff's deputy prosecutors say beat James Degorski so badly that Degorski needed two metal plates inserted into his head."

"Degorski is one of two men accused of killing seven people in a Brown's Chicken & Pasta restaurant in Palatine in 1993."

"Degorski had just arrived at Cook County Jail on May 18, 2002. Prosecutors Maria Kuriakos and Lea Norbut contend that Wilson, who was working one floor below where Degorski was housed, came up and beat him in an unprovoked attack."

-------
The guard's emotions are understandable, but as an officer charged with maintaining the peace and trusted with the authority to do so, he should have exercised more self-control.

FULL TEXT BELOW:

While you're out buying those expensive Christmas gifts make sure to keep an eye out for thieves. Self defense instructor Chris Morton says anyone can learn simple defense techniques. He says you can use items you usually carry with you like keys or a hair brush to defend yourself. " Like I said you don't want to panic," say Morton, who teaches self defense at Elite Self Defense. "You are going to panic if get attacked, but if you react correctly you can survive," he says. Morton says if your attacker has a weapon don't try to fight just throw the item over his head and try to escape in the opposite direction.

-------
No, you do not want to panic. You want to ensure that you are well-prepared by being armed and not victimized.

"Tens of millions of guns in America share design flaws that put their owners and those around them in unnecessary jeopardy, a four-month Detroit News investigation found."

"Firearm manufacturers, long aware of the dangers, have made no concerted, industrywide effort to improve safety."

"The News found that many firearm manufacturers ignore technology including their own that would make guns safer and less apt to accidentally discharge. Internal memos, gun patents and employee depositions show that many of these safety features are cheap, easily installed and have been available for nearly a hundred years."

-------
What the "News" has ignored is simple safety rules that prevent accidental discharges. They would much rather blame the NRA for individual stupidity and promote mechanical gadgets to make people less self-reliant and more dependent on technology, not common sense, to keep them safe.

"Lloyd Woods is a Vietnam veteran and longtime hunter who has spent much of his life handling and using guns." ...

"Problems with the firing mechanism in Remington guns first surfaced in the companys model 721 rifles, a precursor of the 700."

"On April 9, 1947, Remington test engineer Wayne Leek warned company officials of a malfunction in the 721 rifles that was 'very dangerous from safety and functional point of view.' "

"Among the problems Leek cited in a memo was the possibility of firing the gun 'by pushing the safety to the off position.' "

"A Remington product safety subcommittee memo from 1956 acknowledged the ongoing problem: 'A major stumbling block has developed in the safety design, which is considered inadequate in the Models 721 and 722.' "

"But Remington issued no warnings and continued manufacturing rifles with the same firing assembly." ...

"In 1994, a Texas jury awarded Glenn Collins $17 million after his foot was blown off when his 700 accidentally fired as he moved the safety. Collins later settled for a lesser, undisclosed amount."

-------
As with any business, if the product malfunctions and causes death or injury, the consumer always has recourse through the court system. And contrary to the petulant whining of Brady and her ilk, the legislation to protect the gun industry from frivolous lawsuits does not in any way bar such action.

"On April 9, with the nation focused on the war in Iraq, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill to give gun manufacturers unprecedented immunity against most lawsuits, including many currently being litigated."

-------
Now you understand why Detroit News has highlighted tragic stories of accidental discharges. It was to promote their gun control agenda and condemn legislation that would protect the gun industry against frivolous lawsuits, while doing nothing to impede legal action against manufacturers whose products malfunction in any way.

"Tens of millions of firearms in America lack critical safety features. U.S. gun patents dating back a century confirm that gun makers were long aware of the danger and had developed ways to fix the most glaring problems. But many of these safety features have never been implemented on a wide scale."

-------
There are millions of gun owners in this country, most of whom are smart enough and have enough common sense to take necessary precautions against accidental discharges. Why is it that this particular news source insists on pushing an agenda because a tiny percentage of gun owners are irresponsible and ignorant?

"YOUNG Tim O'Sullivan won't be getting his gun. The 12-year-old who accidentally shot his brother dead, has failed in his bid to gain a firearm licence."

"Last week, Tim appealed against a decision by the Chief Commissioner's office to refuse him a licence on the grounds he was not a fit and proper person to be in possession of firearms."
