"The White House says that it is still planning to tackle the loophole in the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law that created the 'independent' 527 groups. The 'soft money' groups had a significant impact on the presidential election, bypassing political parties and candidates' campaigns."
"Liberal leaning groups falling into this unregulated category raised twice as much money as their conservative counterparts. In all, the 527 groups collected and spent $535 million in 2004."

"On November 29th, two women were murdered at work by their husbands at almost the exact same time though they were a world apart. Shennel McKendall of Chapel Hill, North Carolina and Dikeledi Onica Nkatingi of Pretoria, South Africa share more than a tragic death; the factors that characterize their homicides fit the most common scenario surrounding this type of workplace violence. A new study by Peace at Work has discovered disturbing trends in its research of 155 cases of domestic violence assaults in the workplace. The majority of the cases (31%) occur in the parking lot and at the beginning of the workday, just as both McKendall and Nkatingi were confronted by their killers before they began their day as receptionists." FULL TEXT BELOW:
Rochester will become the first city in the Northeast to use a new technology called "shot spotter."
Police install audio sensors on the tops of buildings which pick up the sound of gunfire and instantly send the information to police dispatchers.
Officers expect shot spotter to help them find the scene of a shooting very quickly.
District Attorney Mike Green expects the technology to hold up as evidence during trials, also. "I don't anticipate any problems, Green said. When you use new technology, there are issues that you address. It's our job to address them, and we're prepared to do it." Police expect to start using the technology within the next month. Federal tax dollars will pay for the $300,000 system. -------

Opinions from Attorney General Drew Edmondson say people might be allowed to carry guns onto school and prison property, in certain situations.
Edmondson says schools can't prohibit a person from carrying a gun or knife used for hunting or fishing if it's displayed in a vehicle used to drive a student to and from school. He says the vehicle can NOT be left unattended on school property.
Edmondson also says anyone with a state Self-Defense license can have a gun in a prison parking area if it's an area where there are no prisoners.
The opinions were requested by state schools Superintendent Sandy Garrett and Corrections Department Director Ron Ward. |
