"On December 6, President Bush issued a proclamation for Human Rights Day, Bill of Rights Day and Human Rights Week 2007. Saying 'Americans value deeply our ability to speak, assemble, and worship freely,' he called on us to 'celebrate the freedoms guaranteed to all Americans and protected in our Constitution's Bill of Rights.'" ...
"... Others, like the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms, have not been tested--although there is a case pending before the U.S. Supreme Court that challenges similar restrictions on private guns in the District of Columbia. That case might impact our gun control laws, depending on the decision rendered and how it is written." ... |

"USA Today recently asked readers: 'Does the Second Amendment give us the right to bear arms?' There was an overwhelming 'yes' response (98 percent). But they got it wrong."
"The second of the first 10 amendments to the Constitution, known as the Bill of Rights, doesn't give us a thing. It protects a right we already have, inherent in our being."
"Both conservatives (who should know better) and liberals (who should know better) frequently protest infringements on 'constitutional rights.' But there's no such thing. Our nation's founders recognized only natural rights ....'"
"In other words, rights do not come from the Constitution, or government or the state. They are yours because you exist." ... |

"There are amendments to our great Constitution. And then, there are amendments."
"As every one of us knows, the first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution, collectively, are known as the Bill of Rights. I'm partial to these initial 10 - of which, I have three personal favorites." ...
"Which brings us to Amendment II - The Right to Bear Arms. ... This amendment is known in some circles as the one that defends all others."
"Still, the Second Amendment comes under fire (pun intended) on an almost annual basis."
"For a nation that once cherished its firearms, and respected them as much as a well-honed ax or a noble steed, many of us no longer appreciate gun ownership among private citizens." ... |

"Every year, 15 million licensed hunters head into Americas forests and fields in search of wild game. In New York State alone, roughly half a million hunters harvest around 190,000 deer in the fall deer hunting season thats close to eight million pounds of venison. In the traditional vernacular, wed call that 'game meat.' But, in keeping with the times, it might be better to relabel it as free-range, grass-fed, organic, locally produced, locally harvested, sustainable, native, low-stress, low-impact, humanely slaughtered meat." ... |

"Regarding the mall shootings in Omaha ('Gunman Kills Eight, Self at Omaha Mall,' Dec. 6): Someone needs to explain to me why people are allowed to possess AK-47 assault rifles. This is a weapon that is used for mass killing. Of course, there will be a torrent of "guns don't kill people, people do" arguments. But recent horrible events show that a rapid-fire gun can kill lots of people quickly."
"How many mass murders are too many? We are the only country in the world that allows the public to own these horrible military weapons. Sometimes the lives of innocent people trump our 'rights.' This is one of those times." ... |

"Twelve people are killed and more than a dozen are injured in a week's time in three mass shootings at a shopping mall and a church, and on a school bus. Almost as horrifying as these heartland shootings is the muted reaction to the tragedies, an almost blase acceptance that such things happen and an assumption that nothing can be done. But something could be done. Weakened gun laws have allowed the wrong people to get the wrong kind of guns." ... |

"This country has a serious blind spot when it comes to the Second Amendment. Clearly, we can read the part that says 'the right to keep and bear arms,' but we get bullet-shaped cataracts in the part about 'a well-regulated militia.'"
"The events of the past year should prove beyond all reasonable doubt that America is suffering from an epidemic of mass shootings. ... The list goes on and bloodily on. Few corners of our country have been spared this horror."
"Can it really be a simple coincidence that so many countries in Europe, many of them developed, diverse societies quite similar to our own, have strict limits on gun ownership as well as per-capita murder rates that are a fraction of America's? I doubt it." ...
-------
KABA Note: European gun laws are irrelevant in the comparison of murder rates. Look at their non-firearm murder rates which are also significantly lower than our. Unless the author is arguing that their gun laws reduce their non-gun murder rates? |

"Name: Anna South"

"Gun control is a very important subject. In America, everyone has the right to own a gun, in fact, in the second Amendment it states 'the right of the people to keep and bear arms, and shall not be infringed.' Many citizens own a gun. For example, in the U.S., 49% of households have a gun, and 31% of adults own a gun! Another reason guns are an important subject is because they are dangerous. In America, during 2006 there were 15,289 murders! 10,369 were committed with firearms. These are just some examples why guns are an important subject." ... |

FULL TEXT BELOW:
THE number of people hurt or killed in firearms incidents in London rose to a record high of 1,221 last year, it has emerged.
Home Secretary John Reid admitted the figure has more than trebled since Tony Blair came to power in 1997, when 401 people in the capital were shot. The new toll includes 38 deaths.
Last night, the increase sparked demands for action. Liberal Democrat home affairs spokeswoman Lynne Featherstone said: "Many of these guns are being shipped in illegally from overseas.
"We want the Government to set up a national border force and combine the police, customs and immigration."
The Home Office said: "The Government is absolutely clear gun crime will not be tolerated." -------
