At the Owl's Nest Gun and Bow in Pohatcong Township, gun sales are up at least 20 percent over last year, which highlights a trend that's unfolding across the country.
Owner Jim Heebner said sales began to spike at the Owl's Nest before the presidential election. Some buyers want firearms now because they are afraid President-elect Barack Obama and the Democratic-controlled Congress soon will make it more difficult or expensive to buy guns or ammunition.
On the campaign trail, Obama said he supports Second Amendment rights, but a spokeswoman for the National Rifle Association, Rachel Parsons, said her organization does not trust his record and called his votes "anti-gun." |

An attempt by GOP lawmakers to sneak a resolution through the state legislature last week calling for a constitutional convention or con con -- was halted, at least until next year, by a hastily assembled coalition of grassroots activists who lobbied representatives at the state capitol and testified against the controversial measure during its committee hearing Wednesday.
I believe it was Gods blessing that we found out about it and were able to organize quickly and put a stop to it being voted on today by the committee and the House. It was moving very quickly, activist Teri Owens told NewsWithViews that evening. |

Two boys approached a U.S. soldier, pulled out a pistol and handed it over. They got a smile and some candy in return.
The gun was plastic, and the boys were following a local Iraqi military order to surrender all toy weapons -- an effort to prevent children from being mistaken for insurgents.
With more children on the streets now that violence is down, American soldiers have a new mission in this former "triangle of death" city south of Baghdad: clearing all toy guns from the bustling shopping area as they search for suspected insurgents and weapons caches.
The toy gun ban shows how jittery the U.S. and Iraqi forces still are in a country where the enemy doesn't wear a uniform. |

Most calendars don't denote today as a special one that requires some sort of observation or celebration. If anything, a quick look at the calendar serves only to remind most of us that Christmas is 10 days away.
But Dec. 15 is a day of great importance to all of us. It is the day we observe as Bill of Rights Day, and today is the 217th anniversary of the day those rights officially became the first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution and the law of the land.
For that, we have George Mason to thank, and we're talking about the man rather than the distinguished university that bears his name and is known by some for sometimes

Washington State gun owners should send a clear message to Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels next Monday, Dec. 15 that his illegal plan to ignore state law by banning legally-carried handguns from public property will not be tolerated, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today.
CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb encourages all gun owners in the Seattle/King County area to attend a Monday evening hearing on the mayors scheme to ban handguns from all city property by executive order. The meeting will be held in the Bertha Knight Landes room at Seattle City Hall, 600 Fourth Avenue, with sign-in beginning at 5:30 p.m.

National Guard Army hosted a Showmasters Gun show December 13-14. The show had many people talking about possible anti-gun legislation.
According to Annette Elliott of Showmasters, gun ownership has gone up by about 50% recently. Elliott says that those who already own gun are buying more and that she has been contacted by a lot of first time gun buyers.
Bill Reid attended the gun show and owns several guns himself. Reid says that he understands why people are getting worried.
"Obama has a record of being anti-gun...definitely anti-second amendment," Reid said. |

When I heard the news that the New York Giants' Plaxico Burress had shot himself in the leg in a New York City nightclub with an illegal gun, my heart sagged for him, for our country and for the league I still love. As a former lineman for the Washington Redskins and the current president of the American Hunters and Shooters Association, I know something about the cultures of guns and football - and I'm worried about the relationship between them. |

Gopnik writes, There is no reason that any private citizen in a democracy should own a handgun.
I can think of many reasons to own a handgun, not least of them because there are so many people like Mr. Gopnik writing for major magazines and influencing the way we live which means insisting we become defenseless victims. And contrary to Mr. Herberts insulting lie, Americans arent hooked on violence; it is criminals who are hooked on violence. Most of us go about our daily lives, meeting our obligations, living in kindness and charity, and wouldnt harm a hair on our neighbors head. And when he says, pull the guns out of circulation, what he really means is out of your possession.

An Iraqi television journalist hurled two shoes at President Bush on Sunday during a joint news conference Bush was holding with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki to mark the signing of a U.S.-Iraq security agreement.
"This is a goodbye kiss, you dog," Zaidi shouted.
Bush dodged the shoes and was not struck. Bodyguards quickly wrestled Zaidi to the floor and hauled him, kicking and screaming, from the room. Two other Iraqi journalists were briefly detained after one of them called Zaidi's actions "courageous."

The Washington State Patrol has given the Thurston County prosecutor's office findings from the investigation of nine troopers who allegedly bought fake college diplomas to boost their pay. A patrol spokesman, Bob Calkins, says it's making no recommendation.
It will be up to the prosecutor handling the case to decide whether to file charges. The patrol submitted paperwork Monday.
The Seattle Times reports the patrol discovered the disputed diplomas after conducting a routine review of personnel files. The nine troopers have been on paid leave since Oct. 13.
Patrol Capt. Jeff DeVere says troopers earn a 2% raise for a two-year degree and a 4 percent raise for a four-year degree with another 2 percent for a master's. |

Charles Jointer, 26, said he swept his 2-year-old son into his arms, ran back to his father's office and locked the doors.
Police responded to an emergency call within about five minutes, he said.
He said about 50 people were at the funeral service, and no one else was injured. |

The terrorist attacks in Mumbai last month claimed some 500 casualties, dead and injured. Among the many questions raised by the outrage, there was a purely practical one: Why was the attack so successful? How could so few terrorists claim so many victims? Gun laws werent strong enough to defend victims, only strong enough to keep victims from defending themselves.
One obvious answer is firepower... The victims obeyed the laws, the terrorists didnt. The police had guns but instead of protecting people, they stayed away until the massacre was practically over.
The terrorists were successful because they didnt obey the gun control law rooted in the Raj, while their victims did.

Barack Obama's position on gun control has many folks concerned.
The Second Amendment reads: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
In 1994, Bill Clinton imposed a ban on several types of military-style automatic rifles and high-capacity magazines; however, the ban was allowed to lapse in 2004. According to CNN.com, Barack Obama has proposed restoring the ban and requiring background checks for buyers at gun shows along with other "common sense measures." |

A former Justice Department lawyer says he tipped off the news media about the Bush administration's warrantless eavesdropping program because it "didn't smell right," Newsweek magazine reported Sunday.
Thomas Tamm, whose suburban Washington home was searched by federal agents last year, told the magazine he leaked the existence of the secret program to The New York Times 18 months before the newspaper broke the story.

An Oregon Appeals Court decision has found that your car is now considered a "public place." That means that possessing a loaded firearm in a vehicle may be considered a crime if the locality in which you are traveling has a ban on open loaded carry.
This ruling is a major setback for gun rights in Oregon and puts many people at risk simply by crossing into a town or city that has onerous and unposted rules. OFF is considering what further legal action can be taken, and in the meantime warns gun owners to be very careful when traveling in Oregon. |

Former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and businessman Bernard Kerik made millions selling the idea to police departments across the country.
But Tasers have killed more than 400 people since 2001, according to a new study commissioned by the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.
Police departments across Canada began banning use of Tasers by their officers after the report found that Tasers deliver more power than the manufacturer says is possible.
It is unknown if U.S. police departments will follow suit.

Folks,
I'm about to dive back into the conclusion of Absolved and probably won't re-emerge for anything much serious until I finish. As that will likely be after 16 December, the 64th anniversary of the opening of the Battle of the Bulge, I want to make sure I do this remembrance of an American warrior, a man who more than any other single man, made a material difference to the outcome of the battle. His story is inspiring, almost electrifying, in its incredible details. The fact that his name is almost entirely unknown to this generation of Americans condemns us all.

GUN ownership is booming again in NSW, with 40,000 new firearms registered in the past four years. The rise coincides with a deal cut by the State Government and the Shooters Party to water down tough gun laws introduced in the wake of the Port Arthur massacre. Multiple gun ownership has also soared. The number of people receiving permits to obtain a second or subsequent firearm in 2006 was 32,616. In the first 10 months of this year, 43,095 such permits were issued. The mandatory 28-day waiting period before a second or third gun can be acquired has also been scrapped. The Government has also made it easier for men who have previously been the subject of apprehended violence orders to regain a gun licence.

The U.S. military has been working for a while on tiny, buglike drones to serve as miniature flying spies, Defense Department robot-makers say. But this video, from the Air Force Research Laboratory, shows that the military is also interested in turning these "Micro Air Vehicles," or MAVs, into biomorphic weapons that can lie in secret for weeks at a time and then strike an adversary with lethal accuracy.
"Individual MAVs may perform direct-attack missions," says the video's gravelly voiced narrator. "They can be equipped with incapacitation chemicals, combustible payloads or even explosives for precision-targeting capability." |

With the help of CIA spotters, the Peruvian air force shot down 15 small civilian aircraft suspected of carrying drugs, in many cases without warning and within two to three minutes of being sighted, a U.S. lawmaker said Thursday.
It was the first public disclosure of the number of planes shot down between 1995 and 2001 as part of the Airbridge Denial Program, a CIA counternarcotics effort that killed an innocent American missionary, Veronica Bowers, and her infant daughter in 2001. A State Department investigation at the time said that Peruvian fighter jets forced another 23 planes to land.
