"Before filming began on 'Black Hawk Down,' production crews went to International Studio Services prop house in Sunland looking for an elaborate cache of Soviet-made AK-47 assault rifles, Squad Automatic Weapons and other firearms."
"But they quickly discovered what the makers of 'Saving Private Ryan,' 'Blade 2' and almost every James Bond flick have learned: It's cheaper and easier to go overseas than to navigate the complicated and increasingly prohibitive U.S. gun laws."

So noted NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre when, on December 10, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 decision to uphold the major provisions of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act (BCRA), also known as McCain-Feingold. As we have often reported, the issue that has been of greatest concern to NRA is the law`s prohibition on the running of broadcast ads (termed 'electioneering communications') that mention candidates for federal office during the critical 30-day period before a primary election and 60-day period before a general election. This First Amendment 'blackout' period is a direct attack on free speech." |

"As Americans have, in recent years, become continually less knowledgeable regarding the reasons for the success and greatness of their country, the underlying principle of the Constitution has been increasingly subordinated to its antithetical counterpart. Under the dubious auspices of 'the compelling interest of the state,' a plethora of detestable decisions have been codified into law in recent years. Clearly the Founders, being of a noble caliber unknown among political circles in the present day, instead recognized as paramount the 'compelling interest' of the individual, who by himself could not otherwise prevail against the enormous power of the state." |

"Much of the enthusiasm for Dean from within the freedom movement stems from his record as governor of Vermont, the state with the least restrictive gun laws in the nation. Howard Dean was endorsed by the NRA eight times, and did nothing to push for increased gun control in Vermont. Yet his presidential website tells another story entirely: 'I believe the federal gun laws we have -- like the Brady Bill -- are important, and I would veto any attempt to repeal or gut them. The Assault Weapons Ban expires next year, and it should be renewed.' Dean would allow individual states to set their own policies, as long as the existing federal restrictions were upheld everywhere." ... |
