"Americans should use U.S. Bill of Rights Day Wednesday as a time to exercise the right to keep and bear arms, the 2nd Amendment Foundation said Tuesday."

"'Wednesday would be the perfect opportunity to do any number of things, from purchasing a firearm or ammunition, for yourself or as a gift, to applying for a concealed carry license if you have not yet done so, or visiting a gun range and practicing marksmanship and firearm safety,' Alan Gottlieb, founder of the pro-gun rights group said." ...

"We recently took the safety course required to obtain a 'concealed-carry' permit for a handgun. As residents of the District of Columbia we cannot even legally own a bullet without registering it, and handguns are completely illegal. Yet, since we believe in the Second Amendment, we wanted to have first hand facts." ...

"Since taking our handgun safety class and qualifying for concealed-carry permits, we have had several opportunities to talk with people about guns. Not formal presentations; just shooting the breeze, so to speak. In our last article (The Truth About Guns, Part 2), we speculated about the deep seated fears many harbor about guns. In this column we're going to talk about the response from a few 'ordinary people' who aren't necessarily pro- or anti-gun, they just don't think about the subject much. As a result, they tend to rely on an un-examined belief that's invariably associated with guns. It's seldom directly articulated but you can hear it implied in their tone of voice when they say 'Oh, you like guns' as though they were saying, 'Oh, you eat babies for lunch.'" ...

"A man who has been fighting for the return of guns seized by Baltimore County police after his 1999 conviction and sentencing for auto manslaughter may be entitled to compensation for them, the state's highest court ruled yesterday."

"As a convicted felon, Robert L. Serio is not allowed to own firearms, but the county cannot keep his gun collection because he has not been convicted of illegally possessing the weapons, the Court of Appeals ruled. As a result, Serio may be eligible for 'just compensation,' the unanimous court said." ...

"The issues of gun control and free speech dominate a lawsuit filed by an Oklahoma University geology professor who used a blunt sexual comparison to criticize a pro-gun control newspaper column and later was demoted for that and other perceived transgressions."

"The letter that geology professor David Deming wrote to the editor of the Oklahoma Daily newspaper in February 2000 argued that the owner of an unregistered gun was no more likely to become a murderer than a woman who had not registered her sex organ was to becoming a prostitute."

"The letter prompted 25 charges of sexual harassment against Deming, filed "by people I had never met," he stated in a subsequent column. ..." ...

"It may be that every American 'knows' the Founding Fathers bequeathed to us a Bill of Rights as a guarantor of various liberties, and this belief may be so deeply ingrained in the national psyche that virtually every famous political actor in the country has attested to the framers' wisdom in their crafting of the great bill, but the plain, historical and undeniable fact of the matter is the framers overwhelmingly rejected any notion of a bill of rights. When the proposal was put forth during the Constitutional Convention, only two men of 55 spoke in favor of the measure, and the state delegations rejected the idea unanimously." ...

From OhioCCW.org:

"My name is Roger [last name redacted]. My wife and I were at the Al Rosa Villa Dec. 8th for the concert that had several fatal shootings. We were standing right in front of the band member that was fatally shot when it all happened."

"All I can say is that I felt SOOO helpless in there. We have been there 5-6 times in 3 years for various events, all of which without personal protection. We are both licensed to carry concealed. I leave my firearm at home for these types of events because of the law. The 'Villa serves alcohol, so no guns. I leave it at home instead of in the car because of the crime (I'd hate to lose my 1911 to a criminal)."

"Well, last night it all became clear to me. WOW! I stood not 5 feet from a man that was discharging his weapon into the band members head, shoulder and abdomen, then waving and shooting into the audience. I watched as he swapped clips, then I watched as he ran behind the stage where I heard several more rounds fired. I WATCHED!!!" ...

"A long and sad saga that started six years ago when a white police officer shot a black suspect at close range has drawn to a quiet close with the $1.6 million settlement of a civil lawsuit."

"The case sparked broad interest because of the racial issues it raised, and because former officer Scott Smith was the first police officer in Connecticut to be charged with murder while acting in the line of duty."

"The criminal side of the case ended in March, when Smith pleaded no contest to a reduced charge in the death of Franklyn Reid and received a suspended sentence. Smith's first conviction - on a manslaughter charge - had been overturned on appeal."

A former police officer for the Erie County village of Bay View must surrender his peace officer certificate as part of a sentence imposed on him for threatening a man with a gun on Kelleys Island in September.

Besides losing the certificate, Stephen Wiedenheft, 29, was sentenced Monday to 60 days in jail, all of it suspended, during a hearing in Erie County Court. Judge Paul Lux also placed him on two years of probation and fined him $400, half of which was suspended.

Under a plea agreement, a charge of felonious assault was reduced to aggravated menacing, a second-degree misdemeanor.

According to Kelleys Island police, Mr. Wiedenheft became upset at a pig roast Sept. 18 when he couldn't locate his girlfriend and stuck a semiautomatic pistol into the victim's abdomen.

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Attorneys for the state and for several corporations filed legal motions Tuesday seeking an Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals ruling on a new law.

Paperwork filed in US District Court in Tulsa asked the appeals court to determine whether a law that prevents companies from banning guns in their parking lots is criminal or civil.

Federal Judge Sven Erik Holmes ordered the request last month after deciding that the answer would determine how he rules in the case brought by Williams Companies, Conoco-Phillips and other corporations.

The state has argued that the law passed during the legislative session is civil and a lawsuit challenging it should be dismissed.

The companies say it's criminal.

The law stems from the 2002 firings of 12 workers at a Weyerhaeuser Company paper mill in southeast Oklahoma who had firearms in their vehicles.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
To prohibit a citizen from wearing or carrying a war arm . . . is an unwarranted restriction upon the constitutional right to keep and bear arms. If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of constitutional privilege. [Wilson v. State, 33 Ark. 557, at 560, 34 Am. Rep. 52, at 54 (1878)]
