Today is the United States Bill of Rights Day, but District of Columbia residents are second-class citizens when it comes to the Second Amendment. President-elect Barack Obama certainly does not support it. When I filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court this June supporting the respondent in District of Columbia v. Heller on behalf of 55 senators, the senate president, and 250 representatives, Obama declined. And his voting record in the Illinois legislature and the U.S. Congress has been as hostile to American gun owners as King George III was in 1775. Whats in store for Second Amendment rights come January? |

We've said it before and we'll say it again: the mayor's proposal to ban guns on public property is an ill-founded idea. A.G. McKenna has said Nickels doesn't have the legal authority to follow through on this plan, but so far all the opposition seems to have barely registered with the man and the ban is barrelling full steam ahead. That is, unless enough people make it clear that there are better ways to combat gun violence. Tonight is your chance to speak up in public on how you feel about the gun ban, as City Hall is hosting an official City of Seattle hearing on the subject at 6:30 p.m. No word on whether Mayor Nickels will be there to sign autographs (sorry!).
Ed.: Of course Mayor Nickels wasn't there! That'd require honor. |

Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels is asserting that he has the authority to skirt Washington State's long-standing firearms preemption statute, but in a 2006 letter to House Speaker Frank Chopp, he admitted that state law prevents him from taking any such action.
The letter is being made public at tonight's special hearing at City Hall by Alan M. Gottlieb, founder of the Bellevue-based Second Amendment Foundation.
In his letter to Speaker Chopp, dated May 4, 2006, Mayor Nickels acknowledged that "State law preempts any and all local regulations related to firearms. Our hands are tied at the local level and we are unable to adopt any local laws to protect our residents from gun crime." |

It's safety versus the second amendment in the fight over a possible gun ban on city-owned property.
On Monday the city held a public hearing on a proposed gun ban proposed by Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels in response to a shooting during the Folklife Festival at Seattle Center last May.
Cheryl Stumbo, a surviving victim of the Jewish Federation shooting, pointed out how just one gun with one bullet can do so much damage. The shooting left one of her co-workers dead and five others, including Stumbo and her niece, injured.
Ed.: About 121+ showed up opposed to the ban, about 17 in favor of the ban. Thanks to those who braved the frigid weather to support our gun rights. |

The city of Seattle is holding a public hearing on a proposed gun ban on city-owned property.
The Bellevue-based Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms urged its supporters to attend Monday's hearing at 6:30 at City Hall.
Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels proposed the ban in response to a shooting last May during the Folklife Festival at Seattle Center.
Attorney General Rob McKenna issued a nonbinding opinion in October that cities lack the authority to ban guns because local laws would conflict with state regulations. |

The City of Seattle held a public hearing Monday evening on a proposed gun ban on city-owned property.
There are a number of cities in Washington State that have ordinances banning guns from city property, but the idea of that happening in Seattle is sparking outrage and anger with some.
They came to City Hall with impassioned pleas and some with a gun on their hip, fighting for their right to bear arms in city buildings and parks.
Ed.: Also a short video of some testimony. |

Right now, more than a half million people in Florida have a concealed weapons permit. That's a 50% jump from three years ago, according to the Department of Agriculture. More than 23,000 of those people are in Jacksonville.
People you wouldn't even expect to carry guns now feel like they have to. We spoke to two Beaches businessmen, who rallied their friends, and got all of their permits together.
Marshall Reddy said, "I don't know if the permit makes me feel safer or not. I think it makes me feel a little more comfortable about what I can and can't do. But do I feel safer? Not necessarily." |

The two sides met Monday night for a public hearing at City Hall.
Some called the proposal -- an administrative rule that would restrict firearms on city-owned property -- a common-sense regulation to keep Seattle safer. Others noted that criminals don't follow the rules.
There were more than 70 speakers, the vast majority of whom opposed Nickels' idea.
...
Heads of the biggest departments listened to speakers, but "where is Mayor Nickels?" asked speakers. ...
"I hope this proposed rule is shot down," said a gay man who wants to be able to defend his partner if they are victims of a hate crime in a city park.

The papers this week were full of anxiety about young boys running wild. A poll for Barnardos found that 53 per cent of adults were worried that children were beginning to behave like animals, and that something had to be done about it. In the same week, The Times published a life-size picture of a semi- automatic pistol that had been hidden in the cellar by a schoolboy, 13, who had become increasingly lured into the gangland culture of South London.
Chilling as this story was, the gun reminded me of all those toy pistols I'd held as a boy, crawling through bushes, pretending to kill people when I was a cowboy, a British soldier, James Bond. Had I been a source of anxiety to adults? And should we be clamping down on such murderous tendencies? |

NEW YORK A veteran NYPD detective who accidentally put a bullet in his knee after he stumbled out of a busted chair in a Brooklyn station house hobbled away last week with a cool $4.5 million jury verdict. Anderson Alexander, 49, sued the city for putting the defective chair into use at the 73rd Precinct in Ocean Hill-Brownsville where the detective had the misfortune to lean back while taking a rest following a lengthy New Year's Eve shift. The freak accident took place on Jan. 1, 2002, following a 14-hour stint with the elite Street Crimes Unit, a plainclothes task force. Alexander, a Navy veteran, was asked to hold a 9mm Smith & Wesson belonging to another detective, |

It's a total mess, Will Hammerquist, of the National Parks Conservation Association, told a Missoulian reporter last week. We've replaced one simple rule with this confusing quilt of rules, varying from park to park. It's an enforcement nightmare. Visitors and rangers alike are worried that allowing people to carry loaded guns in national parks will increase violent crime and accidental shootings, not to mention the rate of poaching. We have made it clear before...we don't expect hordes of gun nuts to flood our parks, taking shots at every living thing. But...this rule change will make it that much harder for park employees to identify and prevent a poacher or anyone else from doing harm until after the damage is done.

A few words of my own for Barack Obama if he ever gets around to reading this: I believe in common-sense too, and always have. And common-sense dictates that what people do is always more important than what they say. Further, your stance, as expressed by your past actions, shows even the village idiot that your words are nothing but flat-out lies. A lot of my fellow Vermonters may have voted you into office--because of the ongoing wars, the abysmal economic situation, the loss of civil liberties under Dubya--but needless to say, I wasnt one of them. In fact, I didnt vote at all, and am not even registered to do so. You see, unlike yourself, I dont believe in using my guns, or anyone elses, to control other peoples lives and property, just as I dont want my own controlled--by you, or anyone else. But as to those Vermonters who were foolish enough to vote for you, it wasnt because they want gun control. Vermont has a long-standing opposition to that kind of fascism, and we dont beg the government pretty-please if we feel like carrying a concealed weapon, or keeping handguns in our cars, or owning so-called assault weapons. |

During a weekend press conference, President-Elect Barack Obama responded to reports of a large, nation-wide run-up in gun sales by reiterating his well-traveled campaign rhetoric about how he supports the Second Amendment and how lawful firearm owners have nothing to fear from him. With all due respect to the President-Elect, his stump speeches on gun rights really did not resonate with the nations law-abiding firearm owners. That is why good citizens are flocking to firearms dealers in record numbers. That is why Illinois firearm owners -- the people who know Mr. Obama best -- purchased at least 38% more firearms in November 2008 than they did in November 2007. |

Mike Egenlauf can't carry a police officer on his back, so he carries a .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun.
"All too often the police are there to take witness statements and try and pick up the pieces, and not as often to stop the assailant," said Egenlauf, 33, an IT security analyst from Oakdale. "I realize I am not a cop and don't want to go out and stop crimes, but I do want to come home to my family at night."
He's far from alone.
About one in 20 people in Allegheny County has a permit to carry a concealed firearm, state police records show. With 60,000 licensed gun owners, the county has more than any county in the state. Statewide, more than 800,000 people can carry a concealed weapon.

President-elect Barack Obama was not the most popular man in the room at this weekends gun show at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds, but he was not the villain, either.
In Montana and elsewhere, many people claimed before the election that an Obama victory would be a death-blow to Second Amendment rights.
Obama and his supporters, on the other hand, insisted he aint going to take your guns away, as Gov. Brian Schweitzer put it to reporters during the campaign, and that Republicans were using the issue to scare voters. Plus, the Obama camp argued, the Illinois senator was strong on public land issues, and would give hunters access to more places in which to use their firearms |

Happy Holidays: Now dispose of all of your ammunition! Every last round! From now on, you will be able to buy only overpriced ammunition that will be registered to you in a government database. Not yet--at least for now. A small company, Ammunition Accountability--which wants to help anti-gunners price and regulate the Second Amendment out of existence, profit at the expense of our rights, or both--has found radical anti-gun legislators in 18 states willing to introduce bills pushing such nonsense. In all but one of the bills, people would be required to forfeit all personally owned non-"encoded" ammunition. |

BOSTONGun control advocates hope that manslaughter indictments in the death of an 8-year-old who accidentally shot himself in the head with an Uzi at a gun show will deter other gun shows from allowing children to fire weapons.
But enthusiasts say gun ranges are remarkably safe and that most shows do not feature live shooting like the one in Westfield where Christopher Bizilj, of Ashford, Conn., lost control of the powerful automatic weapon while aiming at a pumpkin.
James Wallace, executive director of the Gun Owners' Action League, a membership-based organization that represents individual gun owners and gun clubs around Massachusetts, said the clubs have a near-perfect safety record.

So the critical question is, given the prediction of another crime wave above, is what will Barack Obama do to counter a very real fear of crime and civil disorder? Certainly the gun confiscationists will continue to blame the firearm and its owner, and we can expect the federal seizure of control over private firearms transfers (the "gun show loophole") and another, more draconian "Assault weapons Ban."
That is one danger.
Another is the undoubted fact, demonstrable by even a cursory reading of history, that crime waves and civil disorders have always preceded tyrannies who come to power promising peace in the streets. . . Fearful people do stupid things, like surrender their liberty.

"New Rules" for Obama's National Civilian Security Force

Behind the scenes at the corporate whorehouse on the Potomac, new rules are being fashioned to make this fascist security force operate like a well-oiled machine. Bob Unruh writes for WorldNetDaily:
New rules published in the Federal Register would allow certain civilians to call American soldiers into action inside the U.S. to prevent environmental damage or respond to special events and other domestic activities.
The alarming warning is contained in proposed rules published last week for the Department of Defenses Defense Support of Civil Authorities plan.
Under the U.S. Constitution, soldiers inside the country essentially are tasked with the responsibility of quelling insurrections and repelling invasions as well as making sure each state has access to the republican form of government.
But the new rules go far beyond that, essentially establishing a plan to activate the U.S. military inside the country to deal with social issues under provisions that appear to be devoid of any connection to the Constitution, according to an expert. |
