AFTER YEARS of mass shootings failed to produce meaningful federal gun control legislation under President Obama, we now have a president whose electoral victory was hailed by the National Rifle Association as an extraordinary, historic, even heroic accomplishment. Donald Trump is a self-proclaimed big Second Amendment person who opposes limits on gun sales and believes gun ownership makes the world a safer place. Whether youre vehemently against guns or cautiously considering buying one, its worth learning a few basic firearm facts.

Independently owned Bill's Gun Shop and Range is the new owner of the Mills Indoor Shooting and Archery Range in Baxter.

A change in ownership has been an undercurrent in recent months but was without official confirmation other than referring inquiries to check back later.

Now the deal is confirmed with Bill's Gun Shop and Range to open Jan. 1.

"We are excited to add this beautiful facility to our group of gun shops," said John Monson, owner of Bill's Gun Shop and Range, in a news release. "I just couldn't be happier being a part of this great business community and the lakes area."

Being a licensed gun owner can get expensive, but one Oklahoma senator wants to change that with a new bill.

Senator Josh Brecheen wants to reduce the cost of gun licenses from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, and possibly eliminate the administrative costs from the local sheriff's office.

"It's an attempt to make sure cost isn't keeping someone from the right to bear arms in accordance to the law," Republican Sen. Josh Brecheen said.

He and the Oklahoma Second Amendment Association are proposing reducing the $100 for a new license, and $85 for a re-licensing fee to $25 a piece.

Congressman Todd Rokita commemorated Bill of Rights Days 75th anniversary by visiting Fort Liberty Firearms here in honor of the bills second amendment: the right to bear arms.

[He] was recently endorsed by the NRA, store owner Douglas Hunter said.

Dec. 15 was designated Bill of Rights Day by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1941.

Rokita began his remarks by discussing school shootings across the country and saying that gun opponents blame guns for those tragedies.

Two women working at a shop in California engaged in some sex-positive self-defense when they fended off a robber using the only weapons they had available: dildos.

Surveillance footage being circulated on Twitter shows a man with a gun attempting to rob Lotions and Lace, a shop in San Bernardino. Instead of opening the cash register, the two women behind the counter started launching dildos at the would-be robber to keep their store safe.

The partisan divide on guns remains four years after Sandy Hook

In the four years since the outrage perpetrated against the students and faculty of Sandy Hook Elementary School, the debate between gun control advocates and the supporters of gun rights has changed hardly at all. What movement has occurred, in fact, has been a solidification of the positions held by each side. States whose laws protect gun rights have extended their exercise, while those that had strict controls have worked to tighten their regulations. The recent ballot measure in California on guns illustrates this. One interesting exception to this trend has been the State of Illinois, and thats been due to court rulings that have pushed back against Chicagos overwhelming influence on the state as a whole.

For those of us in the gun rights and concealed carry community (and old enough to have been around) the 1990s was a pivotal decade.

When it began, there were only 15 states that would issue concealed carry permits to private citizens based on objective criteria and just one that required no permit at all to carry concealed. In contrast an almost identical number (14) that would not issue such permits under any circumstances. In 1992 Bill Clinton was elected President, and working with a largely Democrat Congress he managed to pass the infamous Assault Weapons Ban that also limited magazine capacities to 10 rounds.

It has been almost four years since a lone gunman walked into an elementary school in Sandy Hook, Conn., and slaughtered 26 people, mostly children. The facts are clear -- a deranged young man, after taking guns from his mother and murdering her, went to that school and riddled children and teachers with bullets. No one disputes the fact that since that day some 120,000 Americans have died from gunfire either from another person or self-inflicted. No one disputes the fact that since that day, over 250,000 people have been wounded by guns in America. No one disputes that since that day our nations Congress has failed pass a single piece of legislation to lessen the chance that it could happen again.

The editorial board at the Gainesville Sun published a piece Thursday condemning continued proposals that would see guns on college campuses in Florida.

Just as First Amendment rights dont allow someone to yell fire in a crowded theater, the Second Amendment doesnt allow for a limitless right to carry a firearm anywhere, wrote Gainesville Sun opinion editor Nathan Crabbe, speaking for the editorial board. Even campus-carry proponents concede this point, given that (Senate Judiciary Chairman Greg) Steubes proposal would retain bans on carrying guns into police stations, jails, courtrooms, polling places and most bars.

The group calls themselves, Black Guns Matter; its an organization that deals with fire arm safety and training. Theyre working to educate and inform urban communities about their 2nd amendment rights and responsibilities.

Dozens of people, of all ages, races, and genders, crowded a banquet room at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Springfield Friday night. I learned more about the Massachusetts laws and whats available and what the regulations are, said Corrie Sells of Springfield.

In the debate over gun control, it is often difficult to know which so-called facts are real, given the conflicting claims that are rampant. Not being able to analyze every claim we hear, it is helpful to identify trustworthy sources.

But what do we do when we learn our faith has been misplaced? Id long trusted the Snopes.com website to deflate the urban myths I and my friends would find on the web.

Unfortunately, I discovered to my dismay that Snopes.com fell for the fake facts peddled by public-health propagandists.

Every year, Michael Reckowsky, adviser for Purdue University's rifle and pistol club, asks a fresh crop of college students a question.

"Has anybody fired a gun?"

The response is typically the same on any given call-out night: A handful of students raise their hands, but the rest look on in anticipation.

"We train approximately 180 students every year (who have) never handled a firearm before," said Reckowsky, director of industry engagement for Purdue Polytechnic Institute.

But the standard for using lethal force is elevated for service members who are granted this permission as compared to the standard for civilians, The Washington Free Beacon reports. Service personnel must exhaust all non-lethal forms of defense before drawing their weapons.

Moreover, Written permission will be valid for 90 days or as long as the DoD Component deems appropriate, according to the policy.

The hoops and hurdles contained within this policy are absurd. As Alan Gottlieb of the Second Amendment Foundation notes, Only the government can take 26 pages to justify a right that the Founders spelled out in a single line.

The debate over whether or not guns should be allowed in South Carolina schools will start all over again in the new year after a bill proposing the change was pre-filed in Columbia earlier this week.

Chairman of the Horry County School Board, Joe Defeo, said he fully supports certain faculty having the right to carry guns in school. However, he said the way this new bill is written, there's simply too much that could go wrong.

"To me it's total chaos. So that one principal can say, 'Oh you can carry guns in school,' and the other one could not. I'm not even sure what the point of this person's thought process is," said Joe Defeo.
