A year into the new century and it's finally safe for small boys to come out from wherever it is they've been hiding since sometime in the 1960s. War toys are back.

Retail reports say that this season's hot toys are various versions of GI Joe, along with assorted lethal accessories like machine guns and M-16s. The reason, of course, is the war in Afghanistan and the heroics of the Marines, carrier crews and special operations troops.

Violent crime dropped in the first six months of this year, although the number of murders increased, the FBI said.

A 1.3% drop in violent crime continued a 9-year trend of fewer "serious" crimes. The decline was less dramatic than in recent years, however.

Murders, after dropping 1.1% in 2000, were up by 0.3% in the first half of 2001.

Crime varied by region...

The number of people requesting pistol permit applications has skyrocketed since the Sept. 11 attacks, as Capital Region residents reached for guns to help fight off a new sense of vulnerability.

Pistol permit clerks in Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer and Saratoga counties were swamped with application requests. And a monthly handgun safety course required for pistol permit applicants in Saratoga County was filled to overflowing.

Officials at the Strategic Petroleum Reserve misused government authority to get discounted handguns for personal use, a federal probe found.

Workers used government letterhead and assigned a false security badge number to at least one employee in order to buy the semiautomatic guns directly from the manufacturer, according to an Energy Department report obtained by The Times-Picayune.

"This means, of course, that if the feds were following the law, there wouldn't be any records to examine, since they're supposed to be destroyed once a sale is approved.

"It also means that every congressman who voted for final passage of the Brady Act in 1993 (including Senators Kennedy, Biden, and Leahy, as well as then-Representative Schumer) voted for this explicit ban on keeping the federal records of legal gun buyers." --Dave Kopel

In a Texas contest to bag the biggest buck of the hunting season, 88-year-old grandmother Viola Meckel is the best shot of them all.

She is currently winning the competition in Comal County, north of San Antonio, with a 98-pound deer she gunned down earlier this month from the back door of her rural home.

Meckel said on Friday she spotted the deer and grabbed a rifle she keeps by the door just for such moments...

ABOARD THE USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT - Once or twice a month, sailors aboard this carrier take a break from launching fighter jets to fire shotguns, assault rifles and automatic pistols off the ship's fantail.

"From day one in boot camp all the way to the point of their retirement, they should know how to handle a weapon...recognizing they are part of the defense of our nation not just a yeoman, or a metal-smith, that they are integral to the security of the United States."

The number of South Carolinians applying for gun permits has doubled since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, a state agency reports.

"It's self-explanatory: self-defense," said Aleshire, who also wants to get a permit for his wife. "It opened our eyes. If it can happen there it can happen here. I've got the guns. I just want to carry them legally."

Security expert, Bruce Schneier, analyzes the security flaws any type of ID card system and points out the damage they can cause.

"Given the failure modes, how well do IDs solve the problem? Not very well. They're prone to errors and misuse, and are likely to be blindly trusted even when wrong."

In a world where security seems increasingly elusive, education officials say they are "working harder than ever" to provide safe public school campuses.

Officials with every district contacted said they had "committees" and "crisis management plans" to deal with emergencies.

We want to prevent things, said Santa Fe school district Police Chief Jeff Chernosky.

KABA NOTE: We wonder if Chief Chernosky has anything more speicific in mind??

Denver, CO -- At 12:15pm, December 15, 2001, Rick Stanley, Libertarian candidate for U.S. Senate, was arrested by the Denver police for insisting that his constitutional right to keep and bear arms cannot be infringed.

"You -- not the government -- can decide what kind of gun you need, and when you need it, and how you want to carry it. As long as you use it only for lawful purposes -- for self-defense -- the government has absolutely no lawful authority to restrict your Second Amendment right." --Rick Stanley

There might be nothing so controversial in the Legislature as a gun bill. Advocates of gun control, who tend to favor broad-based registration and licensing, are forever butting heads with defenders of the Second Amendment, who want the state's attention focused not on law-abiding citizens, but on people who use a gun in a crime.

The newest addition to my modest gun collection carries one of the most famous monikers in the shooting world. It's a Winchester, with a dark walnut stock and deeply blued barrel and receiver.

There is a big difference between this rifle and its popular cousins, such as the Model 94 and Model 70. It's powered by air.

With terrorists stealing Social Security numbers to establish new identities, Congress is looking at revamping the way banks, hospitals and state drivers license agencies keep track of every American.

"Social Security numbers should be sacrosanct, but terrorists and ordinary criminals have easy access to them, and we have to stop it," said Rep. Robert Matsui of California, the main Democratic sponsor of a bill to restrict the use of Social Security numbers to federal agencies.

Hamas Agent Foiled When Gun Store Background Check Leads to Arrest -- Americans for Gun Safety (AGS) today urged Congress to quickly approve the McCain-Lieberman gun show bill after a background check at an Oregon gun store led to the arrest of an apparent member of the terrorist group Hamas.

KABA NOTE: (1) You don't restrict everyone's freedom because a few have abused that freedom; and (2) If he couldn't get the gun through a dealer, he could get it on the black market (which would inevitably expand with greater restrictions). The only affected people are the law-abiding citizens.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Foolish liberals who are trying to read the Second Amendment out of the Constitution by claiming it's not an individual right or that it's too much of a public safety hazard don't see the danger in the big picture. They're courting disaster by encouraging others to use the same means to eliminate portions of the constitution they don't like. Alan Dershowitz
