National Police chief Gen. Sutanto has issued orders for police officers to withdraw some 4,000 firearms from civilians and revoke their permits in order to prevent the weapons being used in crimes.
"We used to give permission to civilians to possess firearms for self-defense. But as of now civilians can no longer carry firearms," Sutanto said after welcoming new graduates at the Bhayangkara Police Academy in Semarang, Central Java. |

A CAMBRIDGESHIRE MP is battling to get stronger rights for people who protect their homes from intruders.
Shailesh Vara believes if he gets his new Private Members Bill into law it will clarify existing legislation and give people more security in their own properties.
But despite support from other Tory MPs, Labour backbenchers, and representatives of smaller parties, Home Secretary John Reid has branded it "unnecessary and unhelpful". |

A woman who shot and wounded a man outside her southwest Lodi home will not face charges, the District Attorney's office said Monday.
At 1:45 a.m. on Nov. 1, Noelle Fabrizio, 38, fired a total of four shots with her .380-caliber handgun and hit Benjamin Ortega twice — in the leg and abdomen. |

Several big city mayors are still shaking their fists at the Ohio legislature and threatening a legal battle over statewide preemption in Ohio.
While they claim that this is an issue of public safety, they don't seem to be able to provide any evidence to back it up. The NRA reports that in the last six years, there have been only three charges under local "Assault Weapons Bans" (AWB). Hardly a crime epidemic, and there were almost certainly other charges to pursue in those few cases. |

ALBQUERQUE -- A dancer, her boyfriend, and a customer were all part of an early Sunday morning double homicide in the south valley. Albuquerque Police Department detectives believe the customer strangled the dancer who was then shot dead by the boyfriend. |

If there is anything South Dakotans value as much as gun rights, it's privacy.
So when the state Legislature combined the two issues early this year - in a bill keeping the names of pistol permit holders private - only five of the 100 legislators opposed it. |

Debra Shamsid-Deen had no idea that a state law had been toughened to put anyone found with an illegal, loaded handgun in prison for a minimum of 3 1/2 years. And that bothers her. "It's very scary," the Spring Valley woman said. What if she took a ride from someone who had an illegal, loaded gun in the car trunk? Shamsid-Dean wondered. Or what if one of her sons did the same? Would they be subject to that prison sentence? |

A home intruder shot and killed in Cloverdale early Sunday had just left a party next door to the house where he died, the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department said. The man, who was in his early 20s, was in a brief physical fight at the party near Wilson Road at River Road and had left, said Lt. Robert Giordano. He may have been trying to return to the party but went to the wrong home, Giordano said, though investigators can't know that for certain. |

A man who smashed through a window of a house in Sonoma County yesterday is dead after being shot by the terrified homeowner. Police say the intruder had gotten into a fight at a party nearby. He may have mistaken the Cloverdale home he broke into for the one where the altercation took place. The dead man was not identified by authorities. But police say 53-year-old Gerald Steckmyer first saw him just before 3 am jumping on the hood of Steckmyer's car. Steckmyer called 9-1-1 as the man broke the window and crawled through the home yelling as he approached the bedroom where Steckmyer and his wife were. Police say Steckmyer shot the man "fewer than six times" with a handgun. |

As gun-rights groups lauded a new law passed last week lifting most local restrictions on carrying firearms, Ohio's big cities were contemplating joining forces to stop it. In a rare confrontation with lawmakers, Gov. Bob Taft vetoed a bill that wiped out half a dozen assault-weapons bans across the state and dozens of other local gun laws - but the Legislature overrode the veto soundly, the first time it had done so since 1977. Jeff Garvas, who represents Ohioans for Concealed Carry, said gun rights advocates had been boggled by how to comply with an earlier law that allowed gun owners to carry handguns in holsters, purses and pockets - but didn't apply in municipalities where local restrictions had been passed. |

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Two experts on SWAT team missions question the use of a battering ram by New Hanover County deputies to knock down a door in a raid that led to the shooting death of a college student suspected of stealing Playstation 3 sets.
Such a "dynamic entry" tactic is commonly employed during life-threatening hostage situations or drug raids as a way to seize narcotics before they can easily be dumped down a toilet or drain.
"They can't flush a PlayStation," said David Klinger, associate professor of criminology and criminal justice at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. "Why not just surround the place and give 'em a shout? They come out, you cuff them and you go in and find the evidence."

Mayor McLin and other big-city Ohio mayors are experiencing angst over the recent over ride of Governor Taft's veto of HB 347. They are spewing forth venom at the legislators and gun owners while spreading dis-information to the public. The big city liberal media outlets are willing accomplices in the effort.
The truth is something entirely different. If the Mayors would simply take a deep breath, get their shorts (or panties as the case may be) out of a wad, and exercise some rare examples of common sense, they might actually be able to address crime rather than foisting feel-good-do-nothing legislation on the unsuspecting masses. |

Dec. 8, 2004 is a date that is emblazoned, in the minds of many central Ohio individuals, as the night that the Alrosa Villa nightclub came under attack by a deranged man by the name of Nathan Gale. Several people died that night as the metal band Damageplan took to the stage.
In the audience that infamous night were two of Buckeye Firearms Association's Columbus volunteers - Roger and Tiffany Caron. The Caron's, both concealed handgun licensee's, were front and center when the shooting began. But, because of Ohio's ban on concealed carry where alcohol is being served, they were unarmed, and forced to stand by helplessly.

...Owning a weapon is becoming a habit for rural homeowners who feel unprotected now that so many police stations have closed.
I have never seen a police car in my village and violent crime in the county, of course, is up. Baseball bats, swords, machetes, Mace and firearms are kept beneath the bed or close to hand by many people.
In spite of Tony Blair's legislation against handguns, lethal weapons are easy to acquire in the countryside. They aren't perceived as a problem because they are kept secretly for emergencies, rather than to show off to rival drug-dealers...
...Could we be seeing the first signs of a militant middle class which has had enough and is beginning to arm itself? Perhaps. |
