Unveiling a report commissioned by President Trump in the aftermath of a mass shooting last winter at a Florida high school, administration officials on Tuesday played down the role of guns in school violence while focusing instead on rescinding Obama-era disciplinary policies, improving mental health services and training school personnel in the use of firearms. |

If you want to sell a gun or give a gun to a family member, you might want to think about doing it soon for, alas, if the incoming Democratic Party majority has its way such transfers will be more costly and difficult. U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson, D-Calif., apparently is behind a push to require background checks on all gun salestheir remedy for closing the so-called gun show loophole. Thompson says introducing the bill will be one of the first things on his agenda. |

Two rural northeast Iowa school districts intend to offer firearms safety courses for middle school students this spring. Joel Foster is superintendent for both the Clarksville and North Butler school districts, and he says he hopes the courses will prepare students in both districts to react in the event of an active shooter situation. Students will use inoperable guns with replica ammunition to learn how to load and unload bullets and hold and care for firearms. Foster says they'll also learn how to safely carry guns and how to recognize when firearms are loaded. |

Elections have consequences, and the retaking of the House of Representatives during the 2018 midterm elections is a perfect illustration of it. Several House Democrats are vowing to use their new majority in the House to enact additional controls on guns, which raises several issues. The initial legislation they intend to push for is a bill that would require federal background checks on all firearm sales, but Americans who value the right to keep and bear arms should understand that the Democrats have no intention of stopping there.

The House Majority Leader in South Dakota has sponsored a bill to allow concealed carry in the South Dakota Capitol and any county courthouse, with an enhanced pistol permit. It is part of a movement to restore the exercise of the Second Amendment to mainstream status. According to a study done at the Crime Prevention Research Center in 2017, 16 state capitols have arrangements for the legal carry of firearms in the Capitol, generally for those who have a concealed carry permit. Six states only allow legislators and/or staff to legally carry. |

Continued reporting on gun-related deaths in 2017a record high in the U.S. in almost 40 years, according to The Hill and other publicationskeeps one thing in perspective: combining the number of suicides, homicides, accidents, legal interventions and operations of war creates a more dramatic, and perhaps misleading, impression about firearms in the United States. |

The claim often heard from those attempting to pass more gun control legislation is that all theyre trying to do is get the weapons of war off our streets, but its simply untrue that weapons of war are available to the general public. Youd last about three minutes in a conventional war with an AR-15, even with one of the most aggressive builds you can get your hands on (that doesnt mean its impossible for guerilla uprisings to defeat powerful enemies). The truth is that the only people with weapons of war on Americas streets are, increasingly, the police. |

Just a few years ago, Heckler & Koch introduced the VP9, a startlingly good striker-fired pistol suitable for duty or personal protection. While in no way revolutionary, the semi-automatic handgun stands out for a number of little niceties and innovations, almost all of which are appreciated by American shooters. However, one was not, hence the new Heckler & Koch VP9-B. |

Well, this was expected. After the horrible shooting at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh last October, the city is now moving to ban assault-style rifles, ban certain types of ammunition, and allow courts to ban gun ownership for people who are deemed dangerous. The city has suffered a terrible tragedy when vicious anti-Semite Robert Gregory Bowers shot and killed 11 people. He wounded six others, including four police officers. Police shot bowers after a gunfight. He eventually surrendered to police. Bowers deserves everything he gets in the court of law. |

Berettas master artisans still use traditional tools and methods to create the intricate artwork displayed on premium-grade guns. Stock work is still carried out using wood rasps. For nearly five centuries, Berettas trade secrets and attention to detail have been passed from father to son, making the Italian industrial firm not only the worlds oldest gunmaker, but one of the oldest companies of any kind in the world. Historical documents show that in 1526, Mastro Bartolomeo Beretta of Gardone received 296 ducats in payment for 185 gun barrels sold to the Arsenal of Venice. Bartolomeos barrels were chosen for their superior design, materials and construction, and the transaction established the quality associated with his name. |

Some recent hunting season changes may come as a surprise to hunters believing the long-standing closures still apply. In some cases they do; others have been changed during the last decade or more recently. For the current year, Wisconsins ruffed grouse season in Zone A closes a month earlier than last year. Because of a concern and survey work on the possibility of birds being infected with West Nile virus, the season in Zone A closes Dec. 31, not Jan. 31, as printed in hunting pamphlets. |
