Letter-writer C. Thommen's letter thinks the right to carry a concealed weapon is something reserved for those who sport a police badge ["Earn Your Gun Permit," Nov. 28]. Nothing could be less true. I am a former military officer who carried arms as a part of my service to my country. My military service did not give me a special right to bear arms; it was part of my job.
Thommen confuses the need to carry a weapon as a part of the job, with the right to bear arms. The right to bear arms was earned for all of us by our forefathers; we do not need to re-earn that right at a police academy. It is the government that must earn the right to limit our constitutional rights; those rights are a citizen's to lose by wrongful conduct. |

If you count yourself as a gun owner and are among the hundreds of thousands who are applying for any one of the 7,000 job openings in the Obama administration, do yourself a favor. Throw the application out.
Dont bother applying because it will be an exercise in futility. You wont have a chance based upon the line of questioning posed in question 59 (out of 63). It reads as follows: Do you or any members of your immediate family own a gun? If so, provide complete ownership and registration information. Has the registration ever lapsed? Please also describe how and by whom it is used and whether it has been the cause of any personal injuries or property damage.

When youre the attorney general, youre the chief law enforcement officer of the United States. You should be above and beyond politics. Politics should not be entering into your decisions; you should be making them based on the Constitution and the law. Although Eric Holder was not attorney general during the Clinton Administration, he was really in charge over there, especially near the end. I just dont think, with all the other qualified people out there, that hes the guy I would choose. ~ Congressman Dan Burton in an exclusive interview with HUMAN EVENTS |

Hunters and gun collectors seemed to take advantage of South Carolinas tax-free holiday on handguns, shotguns and rifle sales this weekend.
The "Second Amendment Weekend" ended at the close of business Saturday, giving some retailers the boost theyd hoped for.
Will Abbott, owner of Coastal Sports in Murrells Inlet, called in extra staff and started giving away hot dogs and sodas because people were waiting so long in line.
He said tax-free sales were "phenomenal" Friday. "In past years it has been steady, but nothing like this. |

When Jon and Terri Strayer first envisioned owning a gun shop, it wasnt because they wanted another business to operate. They already have a successful, well-established lawn equipment business in Live Oak that keeps them plenty busy. But Jon and Terri both have a sincere interest in personal protection and the tools available for that purpose. That interest has led them through many firearms and self-defense training classes, as well as regular participation in self defense oriented competitive shooting.
They compete in local, regional and national matches of the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) and Jon is one of a very small number of IDPA Five Gun Master class shooters.

A rush of icy air swooshes through Gunslingers show room every couple of minutes as customers file in and out.
"Its insane," owner Todd Sutherland said on a recent Monday.
"Business has more than doubled, if not tripled," Sutherland said.
Other Tri-Cities gun and ammunition shop owners are echoing similar refrains, but the sales surge is only half the story. Sullivan County, Tenn., and Washington County, Va., both report that within the past two years, the number of handgun carry permits issued has doubled, if not tripled.
People are buying guns and ammo by the handful, not only locally, but across the nation, and reports on the buying surge tend to focus on the election of Barack Obama as the impetus. |

Ditkas proposal drew almost immediate ire from some of the NFLs most colorful characters, including one Adam "Pacman" Jones.
"The Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States guarantees the Peoples right to bear arms," Jones announced at a press conference. "Mr. Ditkas proposal to strip all professional football players of their God-given right to self-defense is nothing less than communism."
Jones, who was involved in an infamous shooting at a Las Vegas strip club back in 2007 which left a man partially paralyzed, was joined by associates "Tank" Johnson, Marvin Harrison, and NRA president John C. Sigler. |

We're told by many in our society that guns for self-defense are an anachronism. They tell us, "That's what we have policemen for."
But this is hardly the first time policemen have failed to stop a bloodbath.
In a free, self-governing society, we all have that responsibility. We can't expect policemen to be everywhere. And, if they are, we no longer have a free, self-governing society; we have, by definition, a police state. |

It is our enemies who are in the driver's seat. It is the enemies of the Founders' Republic who will be on the offensive. We Three Percenters are merely in the position of the 82nd Airborne trooper up on the Elsenborn Ridge in December, 1944. As he dug his fighting position, some refugees from the 106th Infantry Division were streaming past him and his buddies, fleeing the destruction of their division at the hands of the Germans. One of them, overcome by curiousity at the sight of somebody who wasn't running, called out, 'Who are you guys?' The paratrooper answered, 'I'm the 82nd Airborne, and this is as far as the bastards are going.'
Forget more gun control. We are the 3%, and this is as far as the bastards are going.

A group of gun advocates is lobbying state lawmakers for an open-carry law ahead of the start of the 2009 session of the Texas Legislature.
The advocates, who say the states concealed carry law is too restrictive, want lawmakers to allow Texans to carry handguns in plain view.
Supporters of "open-carry laws" have placed ads on billboards in Houston and San Antonio and on taxis in Austin.
The Texas campaign is expected to intensify Tuesday with radio spots in Fort Worth, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Austin that say, "We don't hide our colors, do we?" and encourages Texans to sign an online petition asking lawmakers to make Texas a place where people can openly wear their guns.

The gun lobby has long intimidated politicians with its war chest and its trumpeted ability to deliver single-issue voters, especially in tight races. After this years election, those politicians should be far less afraid and far more willing to vote for sensible gun-control laws.
In fact, Mr. Obama has long been a supporter of the argument, disputed by this page, that the Second Amendment bestows an individual right to bear arms unrelated to raising a militia. But Mr. Obama did not abandon his support for reasonable gun-control laws. Dont tell me we cant uphold the Second Amendment while keeping AK-47s out of the hands of criminals
To fight crime and keep Americans safe, this country needs sound gun-control laws.

"So let's not use the constitution as an excuse. If the NFL owners are concerned about guns -- and they should be -- they need to make the union understand why it is important that it be concerned, too. Baseball, basketball and hockey should do the same thing. The leagues need to do something about their players and their guns."
Submitter's note: Ah, the irony of a so-called journalist, under the protection of the First Amendment, demanding that we not let the constitution be "an excuse" against doing something now...right now. |

New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress has apparently reported to a city police station, where he likely faces criminal charges for shooting ... himself. Burress accidentally shot himself in the thigh last Friday night while at a Manhattan night club, raising questions about whether he has a permit to carry a firearm legally. I'm guessing he doesn't considering he turned himself in at a police station, but why should that matter? There are no reports or witnesses suggesting that Burress threatened or shot anyone else with his gun, which means he's facing charges for the victimless crime of having a handgun in his possession. So what's the point of New York's laws restricting individuals from carrying guns around town? |

Obama's opening salvo in his war against gun rights has been officially posted on the president-elect's site -- http://change.gov/agenda/urbanpolicy/
The Tiahrt amendment, which prevents every local police and sheriff's office from fishing through federal firearm records will be repealed.
Private sales of firearms are on the list for suppression, using the deceptive "gun-show loophole'.
The final posted plan for "respecting the Second Amendment" includes a new bill under the euphemism of a "permanent assault weapon ban," for weapons that "belong on foreign battlefields and not on our streets."

Ready, aim, threaten! Danielle Ramirez is a bright, pretty 20-year-old who has managed with a few hundred words to arouse gun advocates to a degree of unified rage not unlike the loathing Jane Fonda might receive sauntering into a meeting of the VFW. Fonda never has been forgiven for her "peace mission" to Hanoi during the Vietnam War, even though we've forgiven every enemy in every conflict since an army of British redcoats burned Washington, D.C., 200 years ago. And now Ramirez, a fourth-year student at UC Davis, has earned the wrath of those who believe that the presence of guns anywhere is, by God, a right guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. |

I have heard the following argument on several occasions in the past and again yesterday as to why the Second Amendment as a guarantee that the people shall have the right to keep and bear arms is obsolete: Armed with only rifles and pistols, how could you possibly prevail against the Army?
That question in and of itself should be a self-evident answer as to why the Second Amendment is in place and why it is important that we not allow it to be undermined. |

They're small, hidden, pack a powerful punch, and permit holders can carry them most places in Texas. However, when it comes to handguns, a college campus isn't one of those places.
"That's in my opinion, a big problem," said Matthew Rogers. Rogers started Texas A&M's chapter of Students for Concealed Carry on Campus.
"All we're asking is that you allow us to make that choice. If I can legally carry somewhere else, allow me to make the decision whether or not I want to carry here on campus," said Rogers.
At least one person in the Texas Legislature agrees. State Senator Jeff Wentworth of San Antonio, an Aggie himself, has promised to propose a bill that would allow those with a permit to pack heat on campus.

CNN is warning Americans that already making Barack Obama into one of America's greatest "heroes" may not be a good idea. Despite the fact that Barack Obama has yet to take office, despite that he has yet to really do anything to earn that status, CNN is saying that "already, he's being compared to the most remarkable leaders."
Submitter's note: But, but, wait, wait wasn't CNN one of the main ones that was promoting Obama as the anointed Messiah before the election? |
