[E]xpecting a truly independent [counsel] to be appointed by a department that is up to its neck in stonewalling and cover-up, by a president whose own role and interests are appropriate for scrutiny, is at best problematic, and at worst a recipe for ensuring those responsible for Project Gunwalker are never held accountable for actions that have resulted in human deaths on both sides of the border," this column explained in October, 2011 ... What is needed is to reenact authorization for [an independent counsel], and to maintain such powers under the coequal branch of government comprised of our elected representatives, the column concluded. Permanently. Anything less would make the entire investigative effort suspect.

Figures obtained yesterday from the Department of Licensing in Olympia showed 448,983 active CPLs, and CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb anticipates that today that figure will reach or exceed 449,000. He noted that Washington is consistently among the top ten, if not the top five states for per capita licensed concealed carry.

Washington's first concealed carry statute was passed in 1935. In 1983, the state adopted model preemption legislation that was strengthened in 1985 and has become the model for many other state preemption statutes.

About 40 people at State Street Baptist Church on Wednesday night learned more about controversial laws relating to personal weapons and self-defense.

The Community Legal Education Coalition forum was comprised of six experts, each from various fields of knowledge, who discussed Kentuckys stand your ground law and castle doctrine.
The castle doctrine refers to a persons right to defend his or her home with force if an intruder arrives.

A suburban Detroit man charged with shooting an unarmed, drunk woman to death as she knocked on his front door must stand trial for murder, a judge ruled Tuesday.

After a two-day preliminary hearing, Theodore Wafer, 54, of Dearborn Heights, Mich., was ordered held while he faces a second-degree murder trial in the death of Renisha McBride, 19, the Detroit News reports. McBride was unarmed on Wafers front porch when he shot her in the face in November, and toxicology reports showed that she had alcohol and marijuana in her system. She had wandered about a mile to Wafers home at about 4:30 a.m. after crashing into a parked car, and Wafer has said he feared for his safety and acted in self-defense.

At Slate, this got us to thinking: Who were the people who had been killed by guns in the days since Newtown? How did they die? What were their stories? So we partnered with a Twitter user, @gundeaths, who since the summer had been linking to news stories about people killed by guns, and thanks to a lot of overnight coding by my colleague Chris Kirk, we created the first version of our interactive feature, "How Many People Have Been Killed By Guns Since Newtown?" which used news reports to create an approximate real-time tally of deaths by gun in the United States.

The International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) is on to something big and they might not even realize it.

A few weekends ago I shot my first match in over a year the inaugural IDPA Back Up Gun (BUG) Nationals. In a sport that has been known for intricate target engagement sequences and specific rules regarding reloads and the use of cover, those who signed up to compete in the match werent sure what to expect for the first national championship featuring small, concealable carry guns. The BUG Nationals presented shooters with short and simple shooting problems, uncomplicated equipment rules and quite possibly one of the easiest ways to get the female demographic into the shooting sports.

Attorneys at Michel & Associates filed a lawsuit, supported by the National Rifle Association, in federal court on Monday on behalf of several local residents against the City of Sunnyvale. The lawsuit challenges the initiative in Sunnyvales recently passed Measure C that bans the possession of gun magazines capable of holding more than ten rounds. The lawsuit seeks to confirm that the Second Amendment protects these common, standard-capacity magazines for self-defense and sporting purposes.

To the surprise of even city council members, the Petaluma Police Department dusted off a little-known law last week in an effort to educate the public on the city's regulations regarding toy guns. The move comes in the wake of the shooting death of 13-year-old Andy Lopez by a Sonoma County Sheriff's deputy, who reportedly mistook a replica airsoft gun the teen was carrying for a real AK-47 assault rifle.

In a gun-happy state like Florida, there is little shock when rulings and legislation are produced that put more weapons in play.

But thankfully, the latest favorable ruling on guns shouldn't put more people in danger, and essentially follows state law.

The ruling came down last week, when the 1st District Court of Appeal sided with a University of North Florida student and a gun rights group, who challenged a university rule that banned students on campus from storing guns in their cars.

It seems to me that those who wish to bring about gun control should work for the repeal of Second Amendment, not for legislation that would conflict with it and would not be enforced by the courts.

A Highland Park man's recent lawsuit against his town, challenging the constitutionality of its ban on assault weapons, has landed in federal court, according to court documents.

Arie Friedman, a Highland Park pediatrician, along with the Illinois State Rifle Association, filed suit against Highland Park on Dec. 12 in response to the city's new ban on assault weapons. Last summer, Highland Park was one of several Chicago suburbs that raced to enact municipal ordinances regulating or banning the use of assault weapons before the state's concealed carry law pre-empted home-rule authority.

We here in Washington have a history of leading the country from software and coffee to marriage equality and environmental stewardship, Zach Silk told the crowd. Acting together, we can stand up to the gun lobby and change the conversation in the country. Silk, who heads the gun control group Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility, then outlined a path to passing a ballot initiative next November that would expand background checks on gun purchases.

...

Weve probably seen more thrown at us this year then in the whole history of the debate, says Alan Gottlieb, founder of the Second Amendment Foundation, a gun rights organization in Seattle.

Krieger ruled the 44 arent entitled to sue, known by the term of having standing, as long as they remain in office as sheriffs. The judge said sheriffs dont have standing because they are not likely to be prosecuted if they break those laws and they are not likely to lose any constitutional rights as a result of the two laws.

...

The judge said she knew that having current sheriffs as plaintiffs attracted attention to the case, but said Lady Justice blindfolded symbolizes that justice is to be served regardless of who the litigants are.

Ed.: Wow. The sheriffs don't have standing because they are above the law?

Top Shot champ and professional shooter Chris Cheng decided to take on not just one, but two hot button issues of the year as he publicly announced that hes gay on Tuesday.

In his announcement, Cheng said he wanted to be honest and upfront about who he is as he enters a new chapter in his life. Hes currently working on new TV show that documents the diversity of the gun community, and writing a book about leadership and marksmanship.

So far his career in the shooting world has been an exciting one. Since he won on the History Channels Top Shot season 4, he joined the Bass Pro Shop shooting team where he tours around the country making appearances at stores and participating in major shooting competitions.

Bach's widely criticized claim about Fulop was hardly the first time he has invoked the Holocaust to argue against gun regulation. During a July 2012 interview, Bach claimed that, "Ironically, Hitler was pro-gun control," while stressing the importance of an "armed populace." In an essay on his website, Bach suggests that the Holocaust was made possible by "a gradual and systematic program of gun control" and that the atrocity might have been prevented "if the victims had not first been disarmed under the pretext of public safety"

It didn't take long for the deep thinkers at the National Rifle Association and other members of the gun lobby to try to book passage for us on another cruise on the river denial. The voyage is always to a place where down is up, black is white and fiction is fact.

Once everyone's on board, the gun lovers scream at and try to shout down victims and their surviving parents, spouses, siblings and friends who have the temerity to argue for even the mildest gun control measures - all the while reassuring us that they, the gun lovers, have a reverence for family and community and that they feel just awful about the victims' suffering.

You state that Dan Zimmerman does not look like a gun guy. What does a gun guy look like? Over 180,000 Missouri residents possess a conceal and carry permit issued by the state. In addition, there are countless hunters licensed by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Can you identify us? We are your neighbors, co-workers and friends, yet you seem to think you know what a gun guy looks like and that he or she is not nice. Wow!

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Some of the worst abuses of government force in recent years were precipitated by technical and victimless gun-law violations. For example, the BATF claimed that the Branch Davidians possessed machine guns without paying the required federal tax and filling in the proper registration forms. So a tax case worth less than $10,000 led to a 76-man helicopter, machine gun, and grenade assault on a home in which 2/3 of the occupants were women and children. Dave Kopel and Dr. Michael S.
