In a time where ammunition is scarce and often expensive, it is important that shooters find ways to continue training. Shooting is a perishable skill set. Unfortunately, we cannot live our lives on a shooting range perfecting our trigger pull. Ammo is still expensive so the best way to maintain and improve on what you learned at the range is dry fire training. The benefits of dry fire training are easy enough to see, it is cheap and you can do it in the comfort of your own home. Always make sure your firearms are unloaded before you begin dry fire training!

Lately Ive been studying home invasions. Invariably, when a defensive firearm is involved, one of the intended victims has to run to some other part of the house to retrieve a gun. Some are successful in this and quite a few are not. The firearm is rarely retrieved before a family member is injured.

As this correspondent reads accounts of the latest media-inspired school shooting, there was an obvious theme: blame the parents. Convict them before any evidence is presented in court. Indict them with crimes seldom used in such circumstances. Declare they are fugitives in a manhunt.

This years deer harvest is likely to set records, at least for recent years. The biggest contributing factor was the number of any-deer permits handed out by Maine, which was welcomed by many hunters. Some merely wanted a better chance for success while others have long complained about too many does or a buck-to-doe ratio that is way out of whack. Is it possible to have too many does? Can the ratio get so skewed its detrimental to the herd or to hunting? Lets take a look.

Whether they registered as seismic or not, some tremors on Ohios 2021 outdoors landscape mightve shaken inquiring minds to attention. The Ohio Division of Wildlifes decision to reduce the daily limit of yellow perch to 10 along a large stretch of the states Lake Erie shoreline was one temblor. The choice to pare the 2022 spring turkey limit to a single bird was another.

Benelli Nova? Great gun, love that gun. I have several, remarked one of the guides offhandedly on a recent goose hunt. In a blind filled with enviable Beretta semi-auto shotguns and a 10-gauge Browning Id love to have in my own safe, the affordable pump-action Nova proved to be a fine field companion and effective hunting shotgun.

In recent years, many new hunting opportunities have emerged for airgunners, and big bore airguns, like the AEA Zeus, are a central part of that growth. When airguns started to gain traction in the early 2000s, most airgun hunters were using standard caliber guns for small game and pest control. But with time and the introduction of PCP technology, more powerful guns and larger calibers started to turn up. They continued to evolve until we reached the pinnacle of production air gun power in the .72 caliber beast that is the AEA Zeus. For this air rifle review, I tested the Zeus for accuracy at the range and got to see first hand how it performed on animals.

The AccuTip-V is Remingtons premier line of varmint control ammunition. Featuring a plastic polymer tip, thin jacket and swaged lead core, the result is amazing accuracy and a flat trajectory with high velocity. When this bullet impacts a target, it expands explosively creating a kill shot almost every time. So if you live in an area full of coyotes, rabbits, gophers or any other creature thats making your life rough, this type of ammo is going to be your best friend.

Colts snake guns have long held a special place in the American revolver market. In a 50-year stretch starting in the 1950s, Colt rolled out various snake-themed revolvers such as the Cobra, Python, Diamondback, Viper, BOA, King Cobra, and Anaconda. Despite varying degrees of market success, they all offered revolver lovers the finery of high levels of American craftsmanship. Theyve also become highly sought-after collectibles.

Kyle Cahill grew up with guns.

Ive been shooting since I was 8, said the 39-year-old Palmer resident.

Raised in Alaska, Cahill is an avid hunter. He served for years in the military and is now part of the states Air National Guard. He views it as a part of that service to stay proficient with firearms, something he calls a perishable skill.

But thats gotten harder recently. Alaska, like much of the country, is in the midst of a drastic ammunition shortage. Though the shortage has eased slightly in the past few months, nearly every kind of cartridge is harder to come by than it was before the pandemic hit in 2020. If you can find them at all.

New York Aims Big on Gun Control and Misses, Again

In hunting, there is an old adage: aim small, miss small. The point is that, if you want to hit a target, aim for a small part rather than the whole target. It is often the difference between a total miss and a marginal hit. In the area of Second Amendment law, the most promising legislative measures are the ones that aim small on the edges of the constitutionally-based right the strategy used by abortion opponents. The problem is that politicians rarely want to aim small when they are trying to score big with voters.

Eugene Rossi doesnt remember the exact moment that spurred his interest in guns and gun safety. It could have happened in a variety of ways. His father took him hunting. He was always one for safety, Rossi said. As a kid he remembered plinking objects at carnivals and fairs with a cork gun. And, I always won, he said, smiling under his camouflage U.S. Army hat.

Carol Anderson claims the Second Amendment is rooted in the goal of suppressing slave insurrections and therefore is irredeemably racist. Yes, racism has infected other constitutional provisions. But for the Second Amendment, Anderson argues in The Second: Race and Guns in a Fatally Unequal America, the affliction is incurable.

A professor at the University of Miami School of Law has penned a proposal for a "redo" of the First and Second Amendments in a Boston Globe op-ed. Mary Anne Franks, the Michael R. Klein Distinguished Scholar Chair at the university, wrote that the first two amendments, which include the rights to free speech, religion and bearing arms, "inspire religious-like fervor in many Americans" and that both are "deeply flawed in their respective conceptualizations."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Today, we need a nation of Minutemen, citizens who are not only prepared to take arms, but citizens who regard the preservation of freedom as the basic purpose of their daily life and who are willing to consciously work and sacrifice for that freedom. John F. Kennedy
