"In 2002 I asked my House colleagues a rhetorical question with regard to the onslaught of government growth in the post-September 11th era: Is America becoming a police state?"

"The question is no longer rhetorical. We are not yet living in a total police state, but it is fast approaching. The seeds of future tyranny have been sown, and many of our basic protections against government have been undermined. The atmosphere since 2001 has permitted Congress to create whole new departments and agencies that purport to make us safer always at the expense of our liberty. But security and liberty go hand-in-hand. Members of Congress, like too many Americans, don't understand that a society with no constraints on its government cannot be secure. ..." ...

"One useful fact all Americans should keep in mind is that they have no 'right' to be protected by the police. American police are reactive, not proactive. They don't usually "prevent" crime. They catch lawbreakers after they have committed a crime."

"This was by design of the Founding Fathers. Because, as we see today with the anti-terrorism laws, in order to 'prevent' crime, police would need all sorts of obnoxious powers that would trample all over our rights of life, liberty and property."

"Instead, Americans were intended to have the means of self defense. Put another way, the Constitution does not grant the federal government the authority to restrict American citizens from keeping and bearing arms. ..." ...

Bad News for John Lott

"Back in 1997, John Lott wrote an article in the Journal of Legal Studies putting forward data that seemed to show that right-to-carry (gun) laws reduced violent crimes. That article, and the subsequent book 'More Guns Less Crime' influenced me and many others -- including state legislatures that passed right-to-carry laws based in significant part on the assertion that this would reduce crime. I don't have any particular precommitments regarding guns (and I shot many a gun while hunting as a youth), so I am guided by the empirical evidence. If more guns produces net benefits to society, then let's have more guns; if it doesn't, then let's not." ...

... "The bottom line is that whether or not Chang Vang legally owned a firearm or what kind of gun it was is immaterial. Had his gun been illegal, a man inclined to disregard other laws will almost certainly ignore just one more. The reality is that the tragic circumstances in Wisconsin have nothing to do with laws, guns or ethnicity, and everything to do with a man who apparently methodically and without legitimate justification murdered other human beings in cold blood." ...

"Animal rights organizations would have you believe that animals have the same rights as people. That's the key to their strategy of blurring the lines of discussion to the extent that it's hard discern right from wrong."

"Do animals have the same rights as humans?"

"First, let's take a look at how the People of Ethical Treatment of Animals handles this question, as taken from their Web site's frequently asked questions:"

"'You may believe that animals should be killed, that black people should be enslaved, or that women should be beaten, but you don't always have the right to put your beliefs into practice. The very nature of reform movements is to tell others what to do don't use humans as slaves, don't sexually harass women, etc. and all movements initially encounter opposition from people who want to continue to take part in the criticized behavior.'" ...

Stanislaus County authorities say a woman shot and killed the man she lived with early yesterday, apparently after he had beaten her.

The coroner's office identified the dead man as 49-year-old Daniel Hollenbeck of Waterford. The woman's name was not released, and authorities are calling her a domestic violence victim.

Neighbors say the woman often had bruises on her face and body, and Hollenbeck had been repeatedly arrested on domestic violence allegations.

The woman called nine-one-one and told dispatchers she had just shot Hollenbeck. She said she did it to stop him from beating her, according to the sheriff.

The woman was treated at a local hospital, but she was not arrested.

"The ceremony celebrated Nagle's ascension to full professor, the first person of Hispanic descent to reach that stature at Stetson University College of Law. She received a standing ovation from students and faculty."

"In terms of drama, however, the achievement doesn't come close to the events that led to it."

"Nagle was a judge in her native Colombia during the 1980s, a time when drug lords ruled much of the country. She survived three assassination attempts. During the second one, she rolled onto the floor of her office like the cops on television, pulled a .38-caliber pistol from her purse and shot a drug cartel's bodyguard in the leg." ...

"San Francisco supervisors want to make the city the second in the nation to ban the ownership of handguns, but whether such a law would prove to be more than symbolic remains to be seen."

"First, legal challenges are being readied by those who see the proposed law -- set to go to voters next fall -- as bucking state law, which says law-abiding citizens do not need permits or licenses to keep handguns in their homes."
