Detroit police are asking for the public's help in finding a man accused of robbing a woman on the city's west side, before her 15-year-old son, armed with a gun, chased him away.
The incident took place on Nov. 19, about 11:40 p.m., on the 19000 block of Rutherford, police say. That's south of 7 Mile and west of Greenfield.
The victim, a 35-year-old woman, was sitting in her vehicle with another person when the suspect approached and robbed her at gunpoint.
After the suspect took the woman's purse, her 15-year-old son exited the side door of their home, gun in hand, and fired a shot, which hit the suspect. The suspect then fled in an unknown direction. |

The city of Columbia, S.C., has banned the use of bump stocks, the attachment that dramatically accelerates the rate-of-fire of semi-automatic rifles. Columbia is believed to be the first, or one of the first, U.S. cities to enact such a ban.
Bump stocks allow semi-automatic rifles to fire bullets nearly as rapidly as automatic weapons The ban is meant to prevent the device's use, not its sale a discrepancy that Columbia officials say is due to a state law that bars cities from regulating firearms or firearm components. |

Right now, the state of Iowa has no rules related to guns in child care settings, including those in homes.
Proposed requirements from the Department of Human Resources would have required that guns be locked away in day care settings, but Governor Kim Reynolds says the issue needs to go before the Legislature.
Jarrid Cyr, owner of Full Circle Child Development, said while he follows numerous policies and procedures every day, there is no law overseeing guns in child care centers. |

The ordinance, which officials have admitted can be subject to vague interpretations, is targeted at what some council members call "irresponsible" gun owners, who in the past have caused stray bullets to hit windows, fences and homes.
One bullet recently landed in a resident's bathroom shower, town officials said.
Exemptions in the proposed ordinance include law enforcement personnel acting within their capacity of duty, licensed hunters provided all applicable hunting laws and regulations are followed self-defense under reasonable circumstances and discharging a weapon at a lawfully operated shooting range, skeet range or gun club. |

He removed my computer bag, verified it was mine, and led me to the examination table at the end of the screening area. He asked me to not touch the bag at all, while he opened the front pocket and began searching. At this point I saw no benefit in making him work more than he had to. I apologized to him, and noted I remembered what was in the bag. I pointed him directly to the pocket where he would find what he was looking for. He unzipped the compartment, reached in, and pulled out 3 fully loaded magazines that are for my personal carry firearm. I knew the gun was, fortunately, not in the bag, or this story would be a whole lot worse than it is.
Probably wasn't a good time to mention I was headed to Mandalay Bay, either. |

In recent Sunday morning TV appearances and in a nationally-distributed op-ed, Gov. John Kasich has advocated bringing both sides together to find common ground on guns. The leaders of the Ohio House talked about the issue on "The State of Ohio".
The majority led by House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger (R-Clarksville) has pushed for expansion of gun owners rights. Rosenberger said he appreciates the governors approach to try to find something to agree on. At the same time we have to, from my end of things, making sure that we do continue to uphold the Second Amendment," Rosenberger said. |

President Trumps administration has taken down the popular web-based platform, which has seen a number of petitions on both sides of gun politics, promising to retool it.
The petitioning site has been swapped out for a placeholder saying the platform is down for maintenance and will return in late January. As for the outstanding petitions, they are supposed to be back as well.
All existing petitions and associated signatures have been preserved and will be available when the site is relaunched, says the site. Following the sites relaunch, petitions that have reached the required number of signatures will begin receiving responses. |

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says a Republican-backed bill to allow the carrying of concealed weapons without a permit is unlikely to pass the Legislature next year.
Vos said Wednesday that the measure is likely doomed because "there's not a big hue and cry" to pass it. He says voters are more concerned about other issues, like jobs, economic development and how to pay for roads.
Vos says he hasn't had people ask him in the grocery store "when are we going to get that done?"
Ed.: I guess we need to find out where and when he goes grocery shopping so we can vindicate our rights. |

An Iowa hunter is lucky after a run-in with a mountain lion during deer rifle season. Jacob Altena, 17, was hunting deer last Saturday along the Sioux River west of Akron, Iowa, when he heard a sound around 5:15p. While many hunters come across a noisy squirrel or two during the season, Altena stumbled upon a different type of animal: a mountain lion only 15 away from him, lying in fallen timber, the Des Moines Register reports.
It was pretty scary, says Altena. I was in shock. |

The Iowa Supreme Court has said it will allow guns to be carried into county courthouses under certain restrictions, backing off a complete ban initiated in the spring after lawmakers passed a sweeping gun rights bill.
Chief Justice Mark Cady issued an order Tuesday revising the edict he'd written in June that banned guns from all courthouses in Iowa. The revised order allows county supervisors or other local government officials to file a written request to allow guns in the buildings.
When a request is made, the chief judge of the judicial district must write an order allowing guns in public areas that are not totally occupied by the court system. |

As a result, Becket was hacked to death, practically at the foot of the churchs holiest spot, the altar.
Nowadays, a siege mentality is what advocates for open carry on church property favor in the wake of the Nov. 5 shooting at First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, Texas. Speaking to Fox News hours after more than two dozen people were killed in that shooting, Texas attorney general, Ken Paxton, suggested that heightened security and arming some of the parishioners or the congregation could help prevent such tragedies. |

Anyway, an interesting bit of Constitutional analysis from the book was excerpted in Salon yesterday, concerning the Second Amendment.
As you will no doubt recall, the late, lamentable Supreme Court Justice (and world-beating hypocritical gasbag) Antonin Scalia ruled in 2008 that the Second Amendment definitely, definitely vouchsafes the right of all Americans to own as many guns as it is possible to ever own. Asner and Weinberger disagree, both in in spirit, and in letter, not only citing the confusing, ambiguously phrased language that exists in the final version of the Bill of Rights, but also James Madison's first draft, the intention and meaning of which is far easier to interpret, as well as the original Articles of Confederation: |

Can you think of anything more egregious than being in the house of the Lord and someone coming in with ill intent? Gahler asked in a news conference. We cant, unless you extend such concerns to schools, movie theaters, parks, night clubs, open air markets, college campuses and workplaces, all of which, like churches, have been the scene of mass shooting attacks with multiple deaths and casualties.
So, we ask, why stop at churches? Based on the sheriffs past statements, we believe he would agree with us, by the way. Why limit guns at all? |

Today, plaintiffs in a long-running Second Amendment lawsuit challenging the State of California's 10-day "waiting period laws" for firearm transfers have filed a brief at the United States Supreme Court urging the Justices to take up the case or issue a summary reversal of the 9th Circuit's decision.
The case, captioned Jeff Silvester, et al. v. California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, seeks to overturn a Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals decision and clarify the standards that all lower courts should use when reviewing Second Amendment lawsuits. |

A federal judge declared a mistrial Wednesday in the case against Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, saying U.S. prosecutors willfully withheld critical and "potentially exculpatory" evidence from the defense.
Judge Gloria Navarro dismissed jurors and ended the trial against Bundy, his sons Ammon and Ryan Bundy, and militia member Ryan Payne, who are accused of leading an armed standoff with federal land agents in 2014.
Her ruling came more than a month into the trial, which has suffered multiple delays over the handling of evidence by the Nevada U.S. Attorney's Office. |

I am sorry not to be able to assist Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, whom I deeply respect, in building the best and most efficient military health-care system possible. I have the credentials to help, including 35 years of experience in the Air Force (including four deployments to Iraq and two to Afghanistan after 9/11), in military and academic medicine, and in private practice, public hospitals, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the pharmaceutical and diagnostics industries, and public health. But unfortunately, I do not possess one credential the committee wanted to see: I do not support the unrestricted ownership of semiautomatic assault weapons by civilians. |
