A pair of robbers were indicted for stealing 123 guns from a Dunhams sporting goods store in Benton Harbor, officials said Dec. 19.
A grand jury charged Darnell Bishop and Dontrell Nance, both from Benton Harbor, with kidnapping, interference with commerce by robbery, brandishing a firearm during and in relation to a violent crime and theft of firearms from a federal firearms licensee, said Mark Totten, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan in a Tuesday night statement.
Nance also faces an additional felony firearm possession charge, officials said. Both men face punishment up to life imprisonment should they be convicted, officials said. |

Proponents of bans on standard firearms magazines claim that the bans do not affect lawful self-defense, and do impair mass shooters. Supposedly, victims will be able to escape or fight back during the "critical pause" when a mass shooter is swapping magazines. The claims are not plausible, as explained in an amicus brief I filed on Nov. 30 in the U.S. District Court in Colorado. The case is Gates v. Polis, which challenges the Colorado legislature's 2013 ban on magazines over 15 rounds. |

Then, around 9 a.m., officers were dispatched to the Kroger in Fort Mitchell for a report of a shooting, WKRC reported, citing police dispatch. Fort Mitchell is about 15 miles south of Cheviot. Police said the vehicle owners confronted the alleged thief outside Kroger, and a woman shot the suspect in the neck. The female owner of the vehicle who fired the shot maintains she did so in defense of her boyfriends life, as the alleged thief attempted to drive away with her boyfriend who entered the passenger side of the vehicle, police said in a news release. The man who was shot tried to flee in the car, but he crashed into a truck parked at the store, police told WXIX. |

A California law that would have banned the carrying of guns in most public places as of Jan. 1 was temporarily blocked by a federal judge on Wednesday.
U.S. District Judge Cormac Carney of the Central District of California wrote in his preliminary injunction that the law would "unconstitutionally deprive" concealed carry permit holders "of their constitutional right to carry a handgun in public for self-defense."
The California law, Carney wrote, "is sweeping, repugnant to the Second Amendment, and openly defiant of the Supreme Court." |

A man was shot and killed during an attempted robbery in a motel's parking lot late Tuesday night.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office said they received a call about the shooting at the Tropicana Resort Motel at 43420 Highway 27 in Davenport just before midnight.
When deputies arrived, they said Christian MacDonald, 44, told them Harold Omar Sepulveda-Cruz, 33, got into the backseat of the car he and Robert Rafael Pementel-Cruceta Jr., 31, were sitting in. Sepulveda-Cruz then started to demand money and drugs, threatening to kill them if they didn't comply. |

Gun rights groups are challenging a pair of Vermont laws that ban "high-capacity" magazines and set a 72-hour waiting period to purchase firearms.
In a lawsuit filed Monday in U.S. District Court, the Vermont Federation of Sportsmens Clubs argues that the state laws violate gun owners Second Amendment rights and ask a federal judge to grant an injunction blocking the state from enforcing the restrictions.
One law, approved in 2018, bans high-capacity magazines by limiting gun owners to 10 rounds for rifles and 15 rounds for a pistol. Another contested law, approved last year, sets a 72-hour waiting period for purchasing firearms. |

Legal action is being taken against bans on firearms on city property in Lincoln and Omaha.
A group representing the Nebraska Firearms Owners Association filed lawsuits against the cities on Monday over their bans on guns in places like parks, trails and sidewalks.
The Liberty Justice Center, which is representing the nonprofit and several individuals in the case, said these ordinances violate LB 77.
The law, which was signed by Gov. Jim Pillen earlier this year, gives Nebraskans the right to carry a concealed handgun without a permit. |

Its not just the city-level politicians who are making life worrisome for New Yorkers. Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul hasnt helped. New York is already one of the strictest states for gun control laws in the country for the restrictive and subjective may issue concealed carry permit laws that were in place just a few years ago. Once the U.S. Supreme Court struck down may issue laws in its Bruen decision, the governor didnt hold back her disdain for the courts decision.
She called the decision disturbing, frightful, and shocking. In the wake of Bruen, she doubled down with even more restrictions on law-abiding New Yorkers who want to arm themselves for protection. |

The incident appeared to be over a civil dispute, according to authorities, and only one firearm was involved. Police say a car at the scene that had a bullet hole in it was Holsteins vehicle.
The person of interest that was detained has been released. Authorities say the person was cooperative and compliant, and is actually who called 911. According to authorities, the victim and the person of interest were acquaintances.
No charges are being filed at this time, and officers say it may have been a case of self-defense. The investigation is ongoing and will be sent to grand jury to decide if charges will be filed. |

Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them, says the English Standard version of The Holy Bible in Ephesians 5:11. The King James version, which I mostly prefer for its poetic language, uses the word reprove instead of expose. Whatever the closest translation might be, I prefer expose, as reproving can be a quiet or loud thing, but exposing is always public. |

There was recently a Twitter kerfuffle when some frustrated harridan, this time in Nebraska, blew a crone gasket because a store is selling toy guns to kids. Shes one of those Moms Demand Action types, and its pretty clear shell be demanding for a while. She frets that kids playing with toy guns will be a problem when kids start getting them for Christmas, learn to quickly assemble their guns & bring them to school, as if between perverts, communists, and children of degenerate parents packing actual heat popguns are the big threat to the kids in the schools these days. |

A federal judge on Wednesday temporarily blocked a California law that would have banned carrying firearms in most public places, ruling that it violates the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and deprives people of their ability to defend themselves and their loved ones.
The law signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom in September was set to take effect Jan. 1. It would have banned people from carrying concealed guns in 26 places including public parks and playgrounds, churches, banks and zoos. It would apply whether the person has a permit to carry a concealed weapon or not. One exception would be for privately owned businesses that put up signs saying people are allowed to carry guns on their premises. |

This is on top of the already blockbuster term where the court will rule on if a safe and popular abortion drug will be readily available in states where abortion is legal, the scope of the Second Amendment and the future of environmental regulations. All those policy issues will also impact the ballot box.
All this comes at a time where the publics opinion of the Supreme Court remains at historic lows and ethics concerns continue to dog the justices. Chief Justice John Roberts attempt to head off criticism on ethics last month was quickly derided as toothless. |

U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-WY), chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, today blocked an attempt by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to ban so-called assault weapons. Senator Barrasso spoke on the Senate floor on the need protect Americans Second Amendment rights.
Almost every single page of this bill adds new restrictions and new burdens on people who follow the law. It tells you what you can buy and what you cannot buy. It bans more than 205 popular rifles, shotguns, and pistols by name. I oppose any policies that jeopardize the Second Amendment rights of the people of Wyoming and across the country, Sen. John Barrasso Wednesday on Senate Floor. |

In an August brief filed at the Florida Supreme Court, Edenfields attorney, Tyler Kemper Payne, wrote that the 1st District Court of Appeal interpreted the Bruen decision to read into the Second Amendment a limitation to only law-abiding responsible citizens. Such a qualification is found nowhere in the Second Amendments controlling text. The district court cited almost no historical evidence in support of this limitation. |

After mass shootings, we often hear Republican lawmakers say that what we need to address is mental health. Ten days before Christmas, Kentuckys interim judiciary committee held its last meeting of 2023. First on the agenda, the long-anticipated CARR bill Crisis Aversion and Rights Retention sponsored by Republican state senator and judiciary committee chair Whitney Westerfield. CARR proposes a way to temporarily remove firearms from those deemed a danger to themselves or others. CARR addresses mental health. |
