Richmond prosecutors were not authorized under state law to dismiss an assault charge against a city police officer after he agreed to pay his victim's medical costs, Richmond's top prosecutor acknowledged today.
McCloskey, off-duty and in plain clothes, went into the bar and saw an ex-girlfriend and a man sitting in a booth. McCloskey and the woman got in an argument, and the man, Richard Thompson, 35, interjected and said something to the effect of, "Dude, chill out, relax."
The two men exchanged words, and while Thompson was still in his seat, he was punched about six times in the head, Herring said. Thompson had a cut and heavy bleeding. His injuries required four stitches. |

The bipartisan national group with the apt name Mayors Against Illegal Guns has won a major victory. For some states, including Indiana, there's more to lament than celebrate. The coalition made up of more than 350 municipal chief executives -- 10 from Indiana, none from Central Indiana -- managed to persuade Congress to ease access to once-closely guarded "trace data," the federal records of traffic in firearms used in crimes. And what did those records show? |

First, the lobbyist stopped a bill dealing with dog breeders -- after Senate leaders scheduled it for a vote. A few hours later, John Hohenwarter persuaded senators to stay after midnight to strip language out of a another bill -- an amendment backed by county sheriffs that would have increased fees for concealed-carry licenses by $8 -- after the bill already had passed the Senate by an overwhelming margin. Not a bad night's work for a lobbyist who never set foot inside the Statehouse. When you represent the National Rifle Association, sometimes all you need is a phone -- and lawmakers willing to take your call even during legislative sessions. |

There has been much unfortunate name-calling between the Three Percenters and the so-called Pragmatists these past six months . . . They started out calling us "insane" (among the nicer terms) and we responded by calling them "cowards" and the debate went downhill from there. I shoulder as much blame for this as the next man, maybe more. As a guard, I should know better.
You know, the stern, undistractable attitude of the guards at Buckingham Palace has become cartoonish in the public mind over the years. It is now a given that tourists will approach them and do everything (including the flashing of mammary glands large and small, I am told) in order to get them to react. They do not react. They do not argue. They guard.

A new report by the U.S. Army War College talks about the possibility of Pentagon resources and troops being used should the economic crisis lead to civil unrest, such as protests against businesses and government or runs on beleaguered banks.
Widespread civil violence inside the United States would force the defense establishment to reorient priorities in extremis to defend basic domestic order and human security, said the War College report.
The study says economic collapse, terrorism and loss of legal order are among possible domestic shocks that might require military action within the U.S. |

So much of what Obama has stated and then retracted has been chalked up to 'nuance.' His desire to sit at the negotiating table with rogue nations and terrorists brought a firestorm of criticism not only from John McCain but also from his Democratic colleagues during the campaign.
Obama characterized the whole thing as a misunderstanding of his 'nuanced' stance on foreign policy.
Why, then, should gunowners take any comfort in Obama's assurances that he will 'keep his word' when he says he supports an individual right to own guns? His words may be nuanced, but his actions speak very clearly. |

Is it forward thinking, or simply jumping the gun?
With some gun buyers fearing a return to 1990s Clinton-era firearm regulations, several gun shops in Lee and Collier counties are reporting increased sales in the wake of Barack Obamas election as the 44th president of the United States.
Obamas running mate, Joe Biden, played a critical role in the passage of the Brady Bill in 1993, legislation that mandated a five-day waiting period before the purchase of a handgun. Biden also helped craft the Crime Bill of 1994, which included a 10-year federal ban on 19 types of military-style assault weapons. |

It is time for the gun show season to start. Cal Expo is hosting the first show of the year on January 3-4, 2009. I always have a great time at these shows. There are vendors selling reloaded ammo, knives, guns, darts, archery stuff, survival items, clothing, survival books, home made jerky and fun democrat bashing bumper stickers.
Based on the current political climate, now is a good time to start hoarding ammo, etc. A gun can be purchased at the show but there is a waiting period. Curio guns are treated differently.
Support the right to bear arms, come to the show and buy a gun! |

The military trigger is long and slow, but can be mastered with practice. The bolt sucks; it sticks straight up in front of you when you work it, partially blocking your field of view and is slow and clumsy to operate. The safety is horrid and a little noisy even for a mass produced military rifle. Not to mention the fact that the rifle is butt ugly. |

According to the statistics, there are 14,000 lives finishing compellingly under the muzzles. (Financial Times 2008) A series of shocking shoot dead accidents have aroused an intense argument about whether private gun ownership should be banned. Objectors insist that private gun ownership plays an essential role in daily life. However, others attach more importance on the huge side effects of private gun ownership. |

Sam McKeen writes "the Second Amendment was granted to us by a friendly government that stood with us, not over us, and, in order not to intimidate us, granted us the right to keep and bear arms." Horse manure. The Founders would have thought that statement dangerously ludicrous. Governments, even friendly ones, do not "grant" us anything. The Constitution merely codifies our God-given, natural and inalienable rights, among them the right to arms to defend ourselves against tyrannical government. "A democracy by any other name is . . ." The word the editorial headline writer was searching for is "tyranny." The Founders were extremely distrustful of "democracy" . . . |

As two Montgomery police officers allegedly beat Twan Reynolds last September, their superior officer says, he was trying to stop them.
Montgomery Lt. J.D. Burrow says Patrolmen Matthew Leavitt and Shawn Hutchinson threatened to arrest him when he tried to stop them from attacking Reynolds.
He also says that race - the fact that Reynolds is black and his wife is white - played into the reported brutality of what happened.
Reynolds and his wife, Lauren, say Leavitt and Hutchinson hit Reynolds in the head with a blackjack, kicked him in the back and sprayed him in the eyes with pepper spray at close range following a traffic stop at the 7-Eleven in Montgomery on Sept. 26. |

A day after he was hit by a stray bullet in the back of the head, 74-year-old E.T. Strickland was back at work today - with the slug still stuck in his skull.
"I am the luckiest guy in the world," Strickland said from his business, Sunrise Financial Corp. in Palm Beach Gardens. "An inch more to the front and it would have hit me straight on. As it is, it just glanced around and lodged in the back."
The bullet hurts, he says, but not enough to stop him from going back to work.
"We sell commercial real estate so it's got to go on," Strickland said. "I didn't know what else to do and I felt pretty good."

A lot of folks are coming to the realization that in the near future, they may have to use their firearms for more than toting to the range on a sunny Saturday and punching paper targets with them. Some of them, most in fact, will have never shouldered a weapon on the two-way firing range that is infantry combat. If and when they do, they will discover that Mae West was right, "Packaging is everything."
I have written on this subject before . . . So for some of you what I am about to say is repetitious. Well, given the number of unintitiated newbies who will be flocking to this subject, repetition is warranted.
To begin with, let's talk about strippers. No, I'm not talking about buxom women who take off their clothes for money. |

Chris Hipes enjoys the challenge of a shooting match so much that he started the North Texas Submachinegun Match about five years ago. But he isnt sure he wants his daughter to participate. Shes only 7 months old now, but he said shell have to be well-trained and ready both physically and mentally before she can take part in these events. "Its an inherently dangerous sport," said Hipes, a 35-year-old maintenance supervisor in Denton. "Its like NASCAR. If youre on the front row, theres a risk if theres a wreck that a piece of the car can go into the audience. By letting your children participate in [shooting] matches, you take on that responsibility. "As a parent you have to decide: Was the risk worth it?" |

I fail to understand why so many fear legally owned firearms, possessed by law-abiding people, especially those who hold proper concealed carry permits. Statistically, when it comes to improper or unsafe use of firearms, the threat that this group presents to any other law-abiding person is negligible. In fact, at the moment, I cannot recall ever reading anything factual about a concealed carry permit holder being charged with a firearms offense.
What this rule change does is extend Second Amendment rights to include geographic areas where, in the past, a normally law-abiding person could have found themselves in trouble just because they were driving on the wrong piece of road with a firearm in their possession. |

I am hopeful our Legislature will get it done in 2008 and Oklahomans will get in touch with their state representatives and senators, urging them to withdraw from the call for a National Constitutional Convention.
The push for a convention is coming from the left. Among the issues they want addressed are abortion on demand, homosexual marriage, absolute separation of church and state language, the death penalty, disband the Electoral College, repeal private property rights, rewrite the Second Amendment, national ID cards, open borders and pathways to citizenship for illegal aliens, redistribution of wealth and repeal of the 10th Amendment. |

To the great chagrin of gun shop owners, ammo suppliers, and those nefarious gun show peddlers, there is no longer a need for Americans to stock up on weapons and ammunition. What has been an incredible boon for the weapons market, the fear of citizens losing the right to bear arms is unfounded. The President-elect has spoken. Knock off the snickering I am serious. President-elect Obama at a press conference December 7, 2008 assured folks that he isn't taking away their guns. It was somewhat notable that he did not mention their Bibles but since he is a Christian and the Bible was not a subject of the discussion we Bible-thumpers should have nothing to fear either. |

This act cost him his life, according to police.
The men began to argue. During the fight, Phelps left his apartment and pulled out a knife. The maintenance man, whom police did not identify, then shot Phelps once in the chest with a handgun that he was carrying legally, according to police.
Phelps was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said no arrests have been made. The shooting remains under investigation.
