As the yellow school bus drove off into swirling snow flurries last week in Bedford County, Pa., a dozen teenagers shuffled into a low-slung building, dropped their book bags, and grabbed their rifles.
Theyd all skipped caffeine at school and cut back on sugar to keep their heart rates down and their nerves steady. They donned thick canvas uniforms to hold their bodies rigid when they aimed. Some knelt. Some stood. A few lay prone on mats spread out on the cold floor. Just around 3:30 p.m., starting time for the Everett Area High School Rifle Teams practice, the teens loaded .22-caliber bullets into their rifles, $2,000 to $5,000 worth of hardware each, rested their cheeks on the stocks, and held their breath.

USA Shooting athletes and the organization itself face a complicated situation every time a mass shooting happens. The governing bodys name alone is problematic.
Guess what happens with our Google search terms or any time that comes up when a USA shooting happens? USA Shooting communications director Kevin Neuendorf asked rhetorically. Were automatically linked in with that tragedy.
Its in those times that former Olympian Lydia Paterson of Kansas City, Kansas, and others play a crucial role as junior ambassadors for the National Rifle Association. Neuendorf says the ambassadors help provide every bit of evidence of what good can come with a gun.

The proposed code amendment will be presented for final consideration and adoption at the January 18, 2018, Commission meeting.
The proposed changes are in response to complaints from some gun owners concerning AGFC regulations on carrying loaded handguns in game management areas or on private land during seasons when firearms are not allowed, such as archery and muzzleloading seasons for deer. It was the opinion of some that the regulations were in violation of Act 746 passed by the Arkansas Legislature in 2013, which affirmed the right to carry a handgun for self-protection.
Under the current regulations, the act of lawfully carrying a handgun could give rise to the presumption that a person is or has been hunting. |

The East Hampton Village Board declared its unanimous support for a resolution brought by the Suffolk County Village Officials Association regarding the sale of so-called bump stocks at its last meeting of the year on Friday.
The gunman who killed 58 people and wounded almost 500 at an outdoor music festival in Las Vegas on Oct. 1 is believed to have modified his weapons with devices that enabled them to fire bullets in rapid succession. The number of casualties notwithstanding, that mass shooting was one of many in 2017 and previous years. |

Columbia attorney Mark Schnee filed a lawsuit this week just hours after the city of Columbia approved a ban on using bump stocks and trigger cranks.
Schnee said it's a violation of the second amendment, a violation of a court order and prohibited by state and federal law. "Banning inanimate objects to fix societal problems have never worked and never will work," Schnee said. "At the end of the day, if it's going to be banned, it needs to be banned and dealt with by a legislative body that has authority to do so, and the city simply does not." |

What is the secret of the NRAs success? It may involve the NRAs ability to speak to and write for media outlets without being questioned, like it did after the Sandy Hook tragedy. Key to this strategy is the use of alleged independent experts who spread its pro-gun views throughout the press.
Take, for example, the pro-gun scholar, David Kopel. Today the news and opinion sections at both The New York Times and The Washington Post are out of sync over whether to disclose his receipt of NRA funding, while The Wall Street Journal misleads readers by never disclosing it.
Writers and editors make their own decisions, which I dont second-guess, said Kopel in an email to The Progressive. |

The point, the center says in its 18-page complaint filed Tuesday, is to shine a light on the Washington gun lobby and its influence over the presidents picks for federal court appointments.
Weve demanded that the administration turn over any records that show the gun lobbys attempts to influence who gets named to the federal courts because the public deserves and needs to know who is calling the shots on judges, said Robyn Thomas, executive director of the Giffords Law Center, in a news release Tuesday. Because the administration has stonewalled us on producing these records, weve had no choice but to meet them in court. |

"I was in fear for my life."
Thats essentially all 22-year-old Reginald Bowman needed to say in court this week to justify shooting and killing 18-year-old Lyfe Coleman in Tampa in 2015. As long as prosecutors cant prove he wasnt afraid, hell go free.
Bowman is trying to use a new version of Floridas controversial Stand Your Ground law, which gives people immunity from prosecution for murder and other violent charges if they acted in self-defense. Earlier this year, the Florida Legislature revamped the law and made it easier than ever for someone to claim they simply stood their ground if they killed or seriously injured another person. Now, courts are seeing more people claim immunity under the law. |

If you have just received a state-issued concealed-carry permit in the mail, congratulations on taking an important step in the development of your personal-defense plan. Although state-sanctioned permit classes are chalk full of legally relevant information such as "shoot/don't shoot" scenarios and lists of places you can and can't carry, there's usually very little information about organizing a daily concealed-carry gear set, proper shooting technique or defensive mindset. There's also very little conversation about additional expenses such as gun licensing and/or registration fees, shooting range fees or the cost of educational materials including books, video courses or live-fire classes. |

Consider the situation in Woodbury County, where the county supervisors voted 3-1 to allow guns in courthouses. The holdout, Democrat Marty Pottebaum, said the following: There are situations where people are not real thrilled to be there (at the courthouse) and its just not a place for guns.
So he assumes that if government just tells an angry person to leave his or her gun at home, then, of course, that person will listen? If a person is angry enough, a prohibition on guns isnt going to stop him or her from carrying or using one wherever they wish. The prohibition will, however, stop law-abiding citizens from doing so. So the guilty are armed and the innocent are defenseless. |

Three masked men broke into the North Carolina home of NASCAR legend Richard Childress, who fired shots at them with his handgun, authorities said Wednesday.
Childress told police that he felt the only reason he and his wife were here today was because of God and the Second Amendment, WCNC-TV reported.
An alarm inside his home sounded when someone broke a window with a doorknob, the Greensboro News & Record reported, citing a news release from the Davidson County Sherriffs Office. |

Unless churches in Texas expressly forbid them, loaded guns can legally be taken into houses of worship by anyone licensed to carry them in the state, Attorney General Ken Paxton said in a legal opinion.
If a church decides to exclude the concealed or open carrying of handguns on the premises of church property, it may provide the requisite notice, thereby making it an offense for a license holder to carry a handgun on those premises, Paxton wrote in his opinion requested by Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick earlier this month. |

The media and the Des Moines Register continue to consistently offer a deaf ear to gun rights advocates in coverage of Second Amendment issues.
The editorial board at the Register responded to the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act with radical recommendations restricting ammunition purchases, on the same day they released a poll showing that a majority of Iowans do not believe additional gun control would be effective in reducing mass shootings. |

Today, plaintiffs in a long-running Second Amendment lawsuit challenging the State of Californias 10-day waiting period laws for firearm transfers have filed a brief at the United States Supreme Court urging the Justices to take up the case or issue a summary reversal of the 9th Circuits decision.
The case, captioned Jeff Silvester, et al. v. California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, seeks to overturn a Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals decision and clarify the standards that all lower courts should use when reviewing Second Amendment lawsuits. |

A federal judge declared a mistrial Wednesday in the case against rancher Cliven Bundy, his two sons and another self-styled militiaman. The men had been charged with conspiracy and assault after their 2014 dispute over cattle-grazing rights in Nevada developed into an armed standoff with federal agents.
U.S. District Judge Gloria Navarro found that prosecutors had failed to turn over documents that could be used to support the defenses case. As NPRs Kirk Siegler reports, Navarro also noted that the government had erroneously claimed several things, including that there werent snipers surveying the Bundy ranch when there were. |

Despite not posing any threat after a year of terror inflicted upon her by New Jerseys (in)justice system, prosecutors successfully broke Meg down and frightened her into accepting a plea deal of one year in prison (instead of facing trial and up to 13+ years in prison if she did not accept the plea deal).
I wish we were making this up, but this is New Jersey Without going into all the details and injustices with her case (some of which we've already addressed in previous stories) we are requesting everyone call Governor Christie to urge him to pardon her before he leaves office. |
