"During more than two years of investigating two campaign committees that Attorney General John D. Ashcroft maintained when he was in the Senate, the Federal Election Commission never directly questioned Ashcroft or obtained a sworn statement from him even though the issue of his personal ownership of a mailing list and the income it produced were central to the inquiry."

"Ellen L. Weintraub, chairwoman of the FEC, said she and the other two Democrats on the panel did not have the required four votes to carry a motion to interview Ashcroft. In addition, she said, all the commissioners did not want to be seen as 'harassing the attorney general of the United States' and so never sought to question him."

"Amid warnings that al-Qaida could be plotting a fresh attack on U.S. soil, security was stepped up Monday at the nation's airports, borders, nuclear plants, landmarks and seaports."

"The threat level increased to orange - or high - just as millions of Americans prepared to travel for the holidays."

"Federal law enforcement officials said the busy holiday season was a key reason the administration decided to boost the threat level from yellow. Many people travel and gather in public places over Christmas and New Year's, creating attractive targets."

"This collectivism is going to kill us, people."

"After it destroys your individuality, it will claim that individual rights do not exist either. It will destroy your sense of self. It will confiscate your earnings, appropriate your achievements and accomplishments and try to convince you that your triumphs arent yours that you couldnt have possibly achieved your goals without the help and input of others that no right, no accomplishment, no earned possession is yours alone."

"It will indoctrinate you into this destructive mentality, teach your children that theres strength in numbers and tell them that individualism is a fault." ...

"The First Amendment is dead. Repealed. History." ...

"In a strange decision last week, a 5-4 majority of the court upheld the Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Act, often known as McCain-Feingold." ...

"But political parties hardly matter anymore, because of another provision of McCain-Feingold. The law also bars them, and unions, interest groups and corporations from running TV ads that mention a specific candidate in the 60 days before a federal election. But if theyre not allowed to engage in politics during the two months before election day (when people might actually be paying attention), why should any of these groups bother engaging in politics at all? Or, maybe, thats what the incumbent politicians want."

"One part of this so-called "reform" legislation greatly reduces the First Amendment rights of millions of Americans who want to express their views during the crucial period of national election campaigns through organizations that produce issue ads. But the new law does not limit the previous right of prodigiously wealthy Americans for example, George Soros or Bill Gates to spend as much of their own money, without contributing to a political party or a candidate, on election advertisements as they like."

"The Libertarian Party, which is one of the plaintiffs that challenged the campaign finance law upheld on Tuesday by the Supreme Court, has denounced the ruling as an 'all-out assault on the right of every American to engage in the political process.' "

" 'Why not just outlaw elections and get it over with?' said Geoffrey Neale, the Libertarian Party's national chair. 'The Supreme Court has just given incumbent politicians the power to financially cripple their competitors and, in the process, award themselves lifetime jobs.' "

"Alcoholism, also known as alcohol dependence, is a disease that includes the following four symptoms:"

"1. Craving--A strong need, or urge, to drink.
2. Loss of control--Not being able to stop drinking once drinking has begun.
3. Physical dependence--Withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety after stopping drinking.
4. Tolerance--The need to drink greater amounts of alcohol to get 'high.' " ...

"Now let us look at each of these four points in order to better understand the mind-set of the dedicated gun controller."

"While this new law will allow cargo pilots to carry firearms onto their planes, GOA remains concerned that the Transportation and Security Administration (TSA) will work to limit the number of cargo pilots who can carry guns, just as it has impeded the number of eligible passenger pilots."

"Captain Tracy Price published an editorial in The Washington Times last week which detailed the extent to which the TSA has dragged its feet in this area."

"The TSA has 'very intentionally and successfully' minimized the number of volunteers to the armed pilots program, Price says, by employing 'thinly veiled threats' and making the program extremely difficult to get into."

Gunfire broke out last night at the exclusive celebrity hangout Rao's in East Harlem when a 67-year-old man allegedly pulled a pistol and fatally shot a patron in the chest, cops said.

The shooting occurred at 10:45 p.m., splattering blood all over the restaurant where the city's power elite often rub elbows with shady GoodFellas.

Witnesses said the laughter and casual late-night dinner conversation turned into screams and cries for help as at least two shots from a .38-caliber handgun echoed through the 10-table establishment.

The gunman, identified as Louis Barone, 67, of East Harlem, was sitting at the bar drinking a glass of wine when the victim walked in, cops said.

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Despite some snowy and foggy weather, hunters in Maryland killed slightly more deer during this year's gun season than they did last year.

The Department of Natural Resources says hunters took an estimated 42,166 deer, about 700 more than last year -- a 1.7 percent increase.

About 2,900 kills were recorded in the 12 counties that allowed a Sunday hunt this year. It was the first Sunday hunt since Maryland was a colony.

State officials believe that the kills from the current muzzleloader season and the final bonus firearms season in portions of the state next month will push the annual kill total past 100,000 for the first time in state history.
