"I received an email reply to my inquiry about the FAA declaring the Second Amendment a 'collective right' in their recently issued spaceflight security regulations."
"When John Ashcroft penned his 'individual rights' opinion, it made headlines around the world. ... this was used to tremendous advantage to convince gun owners to throw their support behind the Bush administration."
"But now we have it from one of the top attorneys in that administration that the 'collective rights' language 'was reviewed and approved by the Executive Office of the President.'"
"Ladies and gentlemen, most will not realize this, but this is news, and it is significant. But chances are, this insignificant blog is the only place where you will learn of it, which means most gun owners will not." ... |

"I recently read on SouthCoast Today.com a couple of articles regarding the Foxy Lady shooting and one letter from Robbi Staples all ultimately involving gun control. As someone who was raised in Massachusetts, I am ashamed, as I believe the founders would be ashamed."
"New Bedford Mayor Scott W. Lang was quoted, '... guns are protected under the Second Amendment,' he said. 'But to allow someone to have a military weapon makes no sense. What the hell is a civilian version of an M-16?'"
"The Bill of Rights does not grant rights; it protects them, as well as limits the power of government. Only people have rights ... The militia as understood by the founders is composed of everyone and is not the National Guard ..." ... |

"It is long past time for the state Legislature and Congress to enact more effective bans on high-powered, military-style assault weapons."
"New Bedford police were overpowered and outgunned when they went to the Foxy Lady strip club last week to respond to a domestic violence incident that turned into a deadly and frightening rampage."
"The gunman, Scott Medeiros of Freetown, had obtained a Class A license more than a decade ago that allowed him to purchase any legal gun in the state, including the AR-15, a military-style semiautomatic assault rifle that is banned in California." ... |

"While any handgun can be used for self-defense, some are clearly better than others because of their caliber, capacity, method of operation and quality of construction. One type of handgun that is familiar to everyone is the so-called service pistol. This term refers to sidearms carried by law enforcement officers. These handguns have a solid reputation for reliability and serviceability and are almost always good choices for citizens who are licensed for concealed carry."
"Police sidearms are usually inherently accurate in trained hands because they are manufactured with tremendous precision and the finest materials. They are also generally very ergonomic and fit a variety of hand sizes ..." ... |

"For many years the old German firm of Merkel has been revered in shotgunning circles. In recent years it has been famous for the world's most affordable classic double rifle, not to mention drillings and a really sweet single-shot. Although there is plenty of German tradition in bolt-action rifles, that has not been part of the Merkel legacy. At least not until now, and perhaps thats just as well."
"The new Merkel KR-1 is quite a lot different from traditional bolt actions. In fact, it's quite a lot different from any bolt action I've ever seen. It is a turnbolt action with forward locking lugs, but the resemblance to a classic Mauser pretty well stops there." ... |

"State legislators had a cautious reaction to New Bedford Mayor Scott W. Lang's call this week for a statewide ban on the sale of military-style weapons like the AR-15 used in last week's fatal shootings of two employees at the Foxy Lady in New Bedford."
"Earlier this week, Lang called it a 'killing tool. ... It's a weapon that's used to destroy an opposition army. We don't need a battlefield in the middle of our city.'" ... |

"It's too soon to know how Ohio's new concealed-carry law will affect Dublin, city officials say."
"The Ohio Senate on Dec. 12 joined the Ohio House of Representatives in overriding Gov. Bob Taft's veto of a concealed-carry law, effectively voiding assault-weapons bans in Dublin and Columbus, as well as nearly 80 other gun laws throughout central Ohio."
"The law effectively wipes out Dublin's ban on the sale or transfer of assault weapons, according to Stephen Smith, city law director."
"Smith said he still is evaluating the effect the new state law will have on Dublin's ordinance, which has been on the books since the mid-1990s." ... |

"Four marines were charged yesterday with murder in the killings of two dozen Iraqi civilians, including at least 10 women and children, in the village of Haditha last year, military officials said at Camp Pendleton, Calif."
"Military prosecutors also charged four officers, including a lieutenant colonel in charge of the First Marine Regiments Third Battalion, with dereliction of duty and failure to ensure that accurate information about the killings was delivered up the Marine Corps chain of command. A military investigation has found evidence that Marine officers may have obscured certain facts in the case." ... |

"The recent posting of pistol permit holders by The Journal News on its Web site was by all accounts quite reprehensible and irresponsible at the least. Conjoined to the anti-Second Amendment, anti-self-defense, and anti-gun 'New Yorkers Against Gun Violence' group, The Journal News has shown how low it can go in promoting irresponsible journalism. Just what crime-fighting ability is this supposed to perform? Now anybody with the collective intelligence of a Journal News editor can perform a Mapquest search and attempt to invade your house. Treating pistol permit holders like criminal miscreants, gun shops like parasitic viruses, and Second Amendment supporters as outdated, knuckle-dragging neanderthals is no way to combat the criminal element ..." ... |

"By now, Matthew Blek would be 34, and no doubt he'd be working hard, raising a family ..."
"But Matthew was lost in 1994 to a teenager with a Saturday Night Special. Mary Leigh and Charlie have toiled ever since to fight the spread of cheap handguns, which have taken a toll on too many families and too many holidays. Now they're taking another step. Orange County Citizens for the Prevention of Gun Violence, co-founded by the Bleks, has donated $100,000 to establish a fund, through the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, to pay for training for activists who want to join the fight to prevent gun violence. The Matthew Blek Memorial Endowment will pay for scholarships and stipends for activists to attend Brady trainings and conferences." ... |

Count me among the more than ten thousand Ohioans who took to the field for deer-gun season for the first time this year using an Ohio Apprentice Hunting License. And count me among those who are already planning to make many trips back in my life!
I didn't grow up hunting, or shooting. When I was introduced to shooting by my father-in-law, who suffered from Parkinson's disease, he was already too ill to spend all day afield. I learned pistols, and have enjoyed the occasional time in front of a trap house, and up to now that has been as far as it went. |

"'The immediate enactment into law of a total gun ban in public places would be the best possible Christmas gift of the President and members of both houses of Congress to the Filipino people,' said Nandy Pacheco, gun control advocate ... Pachecos comments followed the recent assassination of Rep. Luis Bersamin Jr."
"'Politicians should set aside their political differences, and give peace and prosperity to our long suffering people,' he added."
"Pacheco issued his remarks before the effectivity of the election firearms ban on January 14, 2007 ... He also lamented the death of Adolfo Ortega, bodyguard of the slain congressman, and the injury to an unnamed watch- your-car boy who was hit by a stray bullet in the attack." ... |
