'The two men most involved in development of the Second Amendment and rest of the U.S. Bill of Rights in 1788-1789, George Mason and James Madison, were on the committee that drew up and approved Virginia's 1776 Declaration of Rights, Young says. 'Thus, both men fully understood the "well regulated militia" language originated in reference to self-organizing, self-arming, self-officering, self-training, self-embodying men voluntarily associating for defense against government forces employed to violate the constitution and the people's rights.' |

H.R. 2055the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2012has been passed by the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate and has been sent to the President for his expected signature. This bill contains three NRA-backed provisions that will strengthen our Second Amendment rights and prohibit your federal tax dollars from being used to advance an anti-gun agenda. One of the protections expanded and strengthened can be found in Sec. 218 of the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education (Labor-H) division of the bill. This section prevents the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from using taxpayer dollars to promulgate junk science designed to paint legal gun ownership as a public health hazard. |

Data recently released by the National Center for Health Statistics shows that in 2008, the number and per capita rate of firearm accident deaths fell to an all-time low. There were 592 firearm accident deaths (0.19 such accidents per 100,000 population) in 2008, as compared to 613 accidents (.20 per 100,000) in 2007. In 2008, the chance of a child dying in a firearm accident was roughly one in a million. Firearm accidents accounted for 0.5% of all accidental deaths; well below the percentages accounted for by motor vehicle accidents, falls, fires, poisonings, and several other more common types of mishaps.

The Obama administration won't be bound by a gun control ban in the $1 trillion spending bill for 2012, the president said Friday. The funding provision for the federal health agency says that "none of the funds made available in this title may be used, in whole or in part, to advocate or promote gun control." The language aims to ban taxpayer dollars from supporting gun safety research. "I have advised the Congress that I will not construe these provisions as preventing me from fulfilling my constitutional responsibility to recommend to the Congress's consideration such measures as I shall judge necessary and expedient," Obama said in a statement as he signed the bill into law. |

Walk into your local gun shop and youre likely to be greeted by some of the hardest working salesmen and women in America. On Black Friday alone Gun dealers flooded the FBI with background check requests for prospective hand gun and long gun buyers, smashing the previous record by more than 30%. Deputy Assistant FBI Director Jerry Pender said the checks, required by federal law, surged to nearly 130,000 during the day, far surpassing the previous high of 97,848 on Black Friday of 2008. The actual number of firearms sold is likely much higher because multiple firearms can be included in a transaction by a single buyer. The FBI does not track actual gun sales.

On Friday came the good news that Ashton Chinnis, the 2-year-old Anchorage boy shot in the head when a gun discharged in an adjoining condo, was improving. May that continue to a full recovery. We cant imagine a better Christmas gift for his family
Its a gift that shouldnt have been necessary.
Police said that Ronald Flannigon was handling a handgun when he accidentally fired a shot that went through a wall and struck the sleeping boy.

The most important thing on their roadmap is the constitutional amendment. Iowa is one of only a handful of states that does not provide the right to keep and bear arms in the state constitution. It is important that our rights are protected there, as the decisions made by the U.S. Supreme Court in the 2008 Heller and the 2010 McDonald cases could just as easily be reversed by a future court decision. Once our rights are spelled out in our state constitution, we would still enjoy our right to keep and bear arms regardless of what a group of justices sitting in a courtroom halfway across the country say.

My how things have changed since then! Medical marijuana and gun rights has become a national issue. Luckily for Oregon residents, the Oregon Supreme Court ruled in favor of medical marijuana patients in May 2011. However, things are even more complicated then that as seen by the video below. I included the narrative from YouTube to give context:

The fact is that you have 15,16,17 year old kids packing lethal weapons. Once they get caught with that weapon, everything on that weapon can be tied back to them, Arteaga said. All the ballistics, can be linked to drive-by shootings, all the casings, they all come together. The person is better off turning that weapon over with 'no questions asked' and maybe clearing that chapter in their lives.

Nashville airport officers are taking twice as many guns from passengers as last year, part of a national phenomenon possibly rooted in ignorance of the rules or forgetfulness.
Nashville International Airport recorded 40 firearm violations as of mid-December, compared to 19 total last year. Nationally, there were 1,238 as of Dec. 14, about 100 more than all of last year.

The official purpose of Fast and Furious was to allow some guns to be purchased by the gangs so that a larger sting operation could conducted. It sounds like a bad plot in a Vin Diesel movie but unfortunately this one didn't work out as well as it would in a film. These guns were used to kill scores of people in Mexico and one American border agent, Brian Terry.
How is the Obama administration responding to the questions and entirely reasonable criticisms of the program?
With charges of racism, of course!

The number of Iowans seeking permits to carry handguns and other weapons has increased 170 percent during the first 11 months of 2011 a trend one Iowa sheriff calls unbelievable.
During the first year in which a new law gave sheriffs less discretion over which residents can be denied permits, 94,516 Iowans sought and received non-professional weapons permits from January through November, the Iowa Department of Public Safety reports.

And some say the pro-gun conservatives in the General Assembly are setting their sights on repealing a gun control law that has made much sense during the decades it has been on the books.
Reports from Richmond say the progun forces in the Assembly and they now have majorities in both chambers and an ally in the governors office are taking aim at Virginias 20-year-old onehandgun- a-month law.

In addition to opening Wisconsin for business again, we also worked on long overdue legislation protecting your constitutional rights. We joined with 48 other states to allow law-abiding citizens to exercise their second amendment right to protect themselves. Moreover, we passed legislation protecting your right to fair and honest elections by requiring a photo I.D.
