Canada: Self defence means right to carry guns

With all due respect to your editorial's statement that it is "dumb" for Canadians to exercise their right to lawful self-defence, such a right is in fact the foundation of any free country.

Our unalienable right of self defence is historically established in our common law and predates our Magna Carta. Concomitant to the unalienable right to self-defence is the ability and effective means to do so.

But it did leave me wondering: Has the ACLU ever stood up for our Second Amendment rights to keep and bear arms, or for our Fifth Amendment rights to own and exchange private property, or for observing Tenth Amendment limits on the reach of federal legislative power? Not that I can recall. Those have become the politically incorrect amendments for today's ill-named "liberals."

If it is proved that Caraway was acting in self-defense, she likely would be protected under Florida's Stand Your Ground Law, which allows the use of deadly force to defend against forcible unlawful entry or attack.

Before the Stand Your Ground Law was passed in October 2005, Florida residents had to retreat until they could not retreat any further before they were legally allowed to shoot in self-defense.

Mayor Scott F. Lang's plan to propose a state-wide ban on the sale and possession of AR-15 and other military-style semiautomatic rifles, following the recent shooting tragedy at the Foxy Lady strip club, has met opposition from law-abiding gun owners and competition shooters. And rightfully so.

The collection at New Life Fellowship north of uptown began 10 p.m. Thursday and ended midnight Friday. Several guns, church officials said, were brought in by teens.

That would be the year I received my first .22 rifle. Clearly, my dad was making sure I exercised my Second Amendment rights while I still had the opportunity to do so, anticipating the day Nancy Pelosi would become Speaker of the House.

"What is the point of having guns, anyway? I'm not sure I understand the attraction to guns. If you don't have guns, you can't shoot anybody. It's just a bad decision. But when does the bad decision stop?"

This jolly 240-pound man isn't dressed in red, and he doesn't rely on reindeer to pull a sled. Instead he drives a pickup and packs a .38 pistol as he delivers toys. And though he looks like a cowboy, he's a man of the cloth.

Meet Alfredo Gallegos Lara, the parish priest of tiny Chucandiro, in the central state of Michoacan, 200 miles west of Mexico City. Dubbed "Padre Pistolas" (Father Guns), the towering, singing priest will deliver toys to the neediest children this holiday season and bring smiles in a region torn apart by heavy migration to the U.S. and a violent turf war between drug traffickers.

Dozens of readers have taken issue with The Journal News over its decision to run a list of pistol permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties as part of a wider investigative article.

The names of more than 30,000 licensed handgun owners were posted online as part of "Falling Through the Cracks," the paper's Dec. 10 report that found that thousands of registered handguns were unaccounted for because there is no system to secure the weapons of permit holders who die. Some readers, particularly those on the list of licensed pistol owners, suggested that the newspaper erred in publishing the names. They said it may target their homes for theft, although the paper did not publish their home addresses. The New York State Rifle and

(Bangkok) Since January 2004, more than 1,950 people have been killed in the three Muslim-dominated southern provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat in Thailand. Yesterday, a female Bhuddist teacher, 34-year-old Chutima Rattanasamnieng, was shot in the head and later died at the hospital.
An unidentified gunman early Thursday opened fire on a group of seven teachers who were traveling by motorcycles to Baan Takae school in Pattani's Yaring district, wounding Chutima and her fellow teacher, Rungnapa Khongsuwan, both of them riding the same motorbike, which Chutima was driving.

Also, don't be fooled by P.C. reporting which identifies the perps as "unidentified gunmen." They are fundamentalist Muslims who view education as a threat.

Albuquerque police are investigating a South Valley homicide which initially was reported as a homeowner shooting an intruder who then drove into the home as he tried to flee. The 911 call came in about noon from the 600 block of Desert Dr. SW with the homeowner saying he had just shot an intruder. Police think the suspected intruder, after being shot, got into a car, rammed a roof-support pillar and fence, then died. Police are questioning the homeowner and his wife and kids who were in the home at the time.

"Japanese Emperor Akihito was asked about the touching subject of honoring the dead of World War II at a 73rd birthday news conference in Tokyo. [...]
"I sincerely hope that the facts about the war and the war dead will continue to be correctly conveyed to those of generations that do not have direct knowledge of the war so that the kind of ravages of war that we experienced in the past will never be repeated," he said..."

The Emperor needs to be reminded that there are things worse than war. Taxes, prison and death at the hands of a tyrant come to mind. How soon the frog-people forget while sweating in their luxurious hotsie tub.

Many of the guns owned by a city man who shot himself Wednesday were legally obtained, police said. The man, James Toglia of 246 Centre Ave., took advantage of a "loophole in the law," Lt. Christopher Hearle said yesterday. Some unloaded, black-powder weapons are considered antique firearms, he said. Many of Toglia's guns, but not all, were replicas of antiques and could be legally owned as antiques without permits. Once loaded and operational, they become illegal, Hearle said. Some of Toglia's guns were loaded, he said.

Texans who are 55 or older are more likely to get concealed handgun permits than those who are in their 20s, 30s and 40s, according to Texas Department of Public Safety statistics. That falls in line with national surveys that indicate seniors are more likely than any other age group to be gun owners. In Texas, 42 percent of those who have concealed handgun permits are 55 or older. Texans who are 60 or older have about 25 percent of the permits issued, statistics show. Former legislator Jerry Patterson, who wrote the Texas concealed weapons law, said getting the permit is often a question of time and money, factors that favor seniors.

"...Individuals entering into society must give up a share of liberty, to preserve the rest. It is at all times difficult to draw with precision the line between those rights which must be surrendered, and those which may be reserved..."

Valley Stream District won the Section VIII rifle championship by the narrowest of margins last season. With several solid shooters returning, V.S. District is the odds-on favorite to make a return trip. With two of the county's best shooters in Stephen Zawislak and Jennifer Bertha back in the fold, there's no reason to think otherwise.

"...that all men, considered in a state of nature, before any government is formed, are equally free and independent, no one having any right or authority to exercise power over another, and this without any regard to difference in personal strength, understanding, or wealth. That, when such individuals enter into government, they have each a right to an equal voice in its first formation, and afterwards have each a right to an equal vote in every matter which relates to their government...."

"...Having thus established these principles, with respect to the rights of individuals in a state of nature..."

"...By the principles of the American revolution, arbitrary power may and ought to be resisted, even by arms if necessary...."
