How about a waiting period before printing gun articles?

"It's not surprising to read a letter to the editor that decries criminal use of 'automatic weapons,' which have been strictly federally controlled, effectively banned, since 1934. It's not surprising to see them conflated with tragedies like Virginia Tech, which involved common pistols. It's not surprising to see the tired old idiocy that our Founders never foresaw 'automatic weapons' when they wrote the Second Amendment, even though rapid-firing and automatic guns did exist in the era of flintlocks." ...

"In counter, I'd like to suggest a five-day waiting period on publication, while the government background checks facts for accuracy, after which time Hammerle can spout off in a paper he prints with lead type and distributed on horseback, just as our Founders intended."

"Recently, I gave a speech at Bucknell University, during which I urged responsible citizens to consider gun ownership carefully explaining that certain people ought not to own firearms. I also urged those who would qualify to obtain a concealed carry permit (CCW). Finally, I talked about the need to change gun laws to stop mass murders inside 'gun-free zones.'"

"Alexander Tristan Riley, a sociology professor at Bucknell, was 'unable to attend' the talk but, nonetheless, offered a scathing criticism of the event ... In his letter, Alexander described my ideas on firearms as simple-minded. ..." ...

"After the Virginia Tech shootings, and again after the Omaha mall shootings, liberals dominated the newspapers and TV talk shows with demands for stricter gun control. More rational voices tried to explain that you can't stop the criminal-minded (or criminally insane) from getting and using weapons, but liberals in lock step shouted all the louder."

"Virginia Tech, like most American campuses, has strict rules preventing even those with legitimate concealed-carry permits from bringing guns on campus. 'After all,' they say, 'guns are scary, and who wants to sit in a classroom thinking there's a law-abiding man or woman nearby with -- good heavens -- a loaded gun in their backpack?'" ...

"The reasoning processes employed by the left are notably different than those employed by the right. I feel qualified to address the subject of liberal thinking because I once was a liberal. ..."

"In defense of my youthful immaturity, a wise Winston Churchill once said, 'Anyone who isn't a liberal by age 20 has no heart. Anyone who isn't a conservative by age 40 has no brain.'"

"Most people mature in their reasoning skills as they age. Some don't." ...

"Handguns are often used for murder and other serious crimes. The liberal fix: Ban handguns. Disregard the Second Amendment and refuse to consider the deterrence to crime that handgun ownership by law-abiding citizens may provide." ...

"The disingenuous Saul Cornell is at it again. His latest attempt at subversion is called; 'A Well-Regulated Militia: The Founding Fathers and the Origins of Gun Control in America'. Mr. Cornell's lies can easily be disproven with the following quotes:"

"'The PRE-EXISTENT NATURAL RIGHT of the INDIVIDUAL British-American 'subject' BEFORE the Constitution;'" ...

"Before the holiday, gun rights expert John M. Snyder sent Christmas cards depicting an armed Santa Claus to the President, U.S. Supreme Court justices, members of Congress and other public officials."

"This custom designed card shows Santa brandishing a semiautomatic handgun as he protects frightened school children from a crazed gunman about to enter their classroom." ...

"'This truth received tragic verification in April 2007 when a madman murdered over 30 people at Virginia Tech University. The university allowed the killing spree to occur when it prohibited those with state-issued permits to carry concealed firearms (CCW) from carrying firearms on campus for self defense. ...'" ...

"Second only to 'It's A Wonderful Life' on TV Guide's list of the greatest holiday films of all time, 'A Christmas Story' (1983) is an amalgam of warm-heartedly cynical vignettes hung on the through line of 9-year-old Ralphie Parker's quest for a Red Ryder airgun." ...

"What continues to dramatically change, however, are the social contexts through which Red Ryders -- introduced by the Daisy Airgun corporation in 1940 -- were once considered wholly appropriate Christmas presents."

"'The BB gun is a symbol representing 'that one thing' we all wanted for Christmas and were afraid we wouldn't get, whether it was a gun, a Barbie doll or a toy crane,' said Jim Clavin ..." ...

"The BUCC recently invited Mike Adams to campus to discuss 'gun rights.' I was unable to attend the talk, but I have a sense of what he thinks about this issue from the columns he writes at townhall.com. His ideas on the topic of firearms seem to range from the simple-minded (e.g., he believes that anyone who thinks that more effective record-keeping of firearm transactions is a good public policy idea is adequately described as a 'statist') to the truly bizarre and ludicrous (e.g., he advocates, one can only hope jokingly, the replacement of Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a day celebrating Americas real 'greatest civil rights leader,' John Browning ..." ...

"There's a saying that goes, 'He who shouts the loudest wins.'"

"I didn't believe it at first. I've always thought that he who shouts the loudest usually is trying to make up for his lack of a point."

"Lately, though, I'm thinking I might be wrong. I think we've become a society run and ruled by the loud, while the meek just shrug and say, 'Oh, well.'"

"I submit as evidence the utterly typical reaction to my column last week about gun control, which I wrote after a troubled teen walked into an Omaha, Neb., shopping mall and mowed down eight people with a semiautomatic AK-47." ...

"A Vancouver police officer was put on paid leave after he drew his gun while off duty during an argument that started inside a meat market, authorities said."

"Vancouver police asked the Clark County Sheriff's Office to investigate the incident ..."

"According to the sheriff's office, the off-duty officer got into an argument with an employee inside the store, and they both eventually went outside to the parking lot. At some point, the off-duty officer told deputies, he felt threatened and pulled out a handgun to defend himself, the sheriff's office said. Officers arrived and calmed everyone down."

"Investigators did not release the name of the off-duty officer. He was put on administrative leave ..."

Submitter's Note: As David Codrea asks: "Any guesses what would have happened had the meat man pulled a weapon on the cop?"

"The sentencing of Wayne Fincher last June attracted national attention from several pro-Second Amendment Internet bloggers, which led to a Montana lawyer taking on the case for free."

"The 61-year-old lieutenant commander of the Militia of Washington County was arrested in November, 2006 after federal agents seized illegal machine guns and sawed-off shotguns from militia headquarters and his home nearby."

"... Rhoades filed a brief on Fincher's appeal ... stating that Fincher is entitled to protection under the Second Amendment from criminal prosecution for violation of federal gun laws. Rhoades argues in the brief that the Second Amendment protects the right to bear arms where reasonably related to the maintenance of a well-regulated militia. ..." ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
I do believe that where there is a choice only between cowardice and violence, I would advise violence. Thus when my eldest son asked me what he should have done had he been present when I was almost fatally assaulted in 1908 [by an Indian extremist opposed to Gandhi's agreement with Smuts], whether he should have run away and seen me killed or whether he should have used his physical force which he could and wanted to use, and defend me, I told him it was his duty to defend me even by using violence. Hence it was that I took part in the Boer War, the so-called Zulu Rebellion and [World War I]. Hence also do I advocate training in arms for those who believe in the method of violence. I would rather have India resort to arms in order to defend her honor than that she should in a cowardly manner become or remain a helpless witness to her own dishonor. Mohandas K. Gandhi, Young India, August 11, 1920 from Fischer, Louis ed.,The Essential Gandhi, 1962
