"There is a tendency amongst practicioners of the armed citizenry to slavishly copy the gear requirements adopted by the US Army and Marines. This tendency finds its way into 'gear lists' of 'required equipment' that strain the budget, and worse, the backs of citizen soldiers."
"One of my favorite photos of the Irish Civil War is found on the cover of the trade paperback edition of Tim Pat Coogan's classic, The IRA: A History. It shows anti-Treaty Volunteers ... patrolling a Dublin street. Their uniform is trench coats and fedoras and they are each armed simply with an SMLE in .303 and a bandoleer of ammunition in stripper clips. ... They are ready to fight, or if outnumbered and put under pressure, to easily dump arms and blend into the crowd." ... |

... "The oath represented the culmination of 'Machtergreifung,' a German word meaning 'seizure of power'. This term was first coined by the Nazis themselves in order to portray their accession to power as an active seizure. However, since Hitler's accession to power was the result of intrigue rather than of an active revolution, the term has been criticized by historians, some of whom prefer Machterschleichung ('sneaking into power'). This term could apply to any tyrant who uses existing democratic forms to sneak into absolute power. It remains to be seen whether Barack Obama has committed Machterschleichung." ... |

"Jack Allgood from Michigan City High School wrote a column Tuesday titled 'Guns Should Be Outlawed in U.S.' I am afraid he needs some education (as opposed to indoctrination) on that subject."
"The basic premise that outlawing guns will resolve violent crime is simply wrong. Why not just outlaw violent crime? The answer is the same - it is because criminals do not obey laws. They will not turn in their guns to assist the nation in becoming gun-free. Gun control laws only result in the disarming of the law-abiding public, taking away their right to defend themselves - while the criminals ignore the gun laws along with all others." ... |

On Friday, the Marine Corps Systems Command in Quantico, Va., announced contract awards for three competing weapons manufacturers to produce and deliver their final entries to the Corps by the middle of next year, in what signifies a final round of competition that began with ten candidates."

"In response to a man dressed in a Santa suit opening fire at a home in Colvino, California, shooting an eight-year-old girl in the face, her 16-year-old sister in the back, then killing eight others and himself, Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign, issued the following statement:
"'Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and community touched by this terrible tragedy. It is profoundly sad that a distraught man would take up arms to kill his family and others.'" ... -------
KABA Note: Why don't Paul's "thoughts and prayers" go out to the 14 hospitalized when an elderly driver lost control and crashed into a Hanukkah celebration? Is he too busy dancing in the blood of the slain partygoers (most of whom were killed by the fire)? |

... "Consider some of the bogus claims we've debunked just since Election Day:" ...
"President-elect Obama never promised to seek a ban on all semi-automatic weapons, as claimed by some fearful gun owners." ...
"The election of Barack Obama and the expansion of Democratic majorities in the House and Senate have spawned some misinformation spread by viral e-mails and bloggers. One is a fake quote in which Obama supposedly promised during his presidential campaign to seek 'bans on all semi-automatic guns,' a category that would include many common handguns, hunting rifles and shotguns. As we detailed in an Ask FactCheck item posted on Dec. 8, this claim is baseless and the quote is almost certainly fabricated." ... -------
KABA Note: Really? A quick google search turned up these answers on a Political Courage Test. Or see his answers to question 35 on the 2003 Independent Voters of Illinois Independent Precinct Organization Questionnaire. It seems that the 'bunk' and 'whoppers' are coming from FactCheck.org. |

"Earlier this month, the Virginia State Crime Commission danced back from an opportunity to help reduce crime. It declined ... to recommend that the General Assembly close the gun-show loophole."
"Loophole? Gun-rights advocates never tire of arguing that there's no such thing. There is indeed."
"Federal and state law require that people buying guns from licensed dealers undergo background checks. ..."
"But at a gun show ... vendors who don't have federal licenses are permitted to sell guns ..." ... -------
Submitter's Note: Of course these are the same people who decried "kitchen table dealers" saying that they should not be licensed. If the antis really want to close the 'loophole', drop the price of an FFL to $10 a year and get rid of the felony charges for writing 'Y' instead of 'Yes' on a form, or filing the forms in the incorrect order, and I am sure people whould be lined up to get licensed. |

... "The Tactical Life blog has this article from the Miami Times wherein the cops warn us that criminals are getting more violent and senseless in their rampages. Beyond mostly clucking their tongues at the problem that they seem to despair of solution, one of the things the cops claim will help is, you guessed it, disarming us -- stripping citizens of semi-automatic rifles of military utility. As in this quote:"
"... [Miami Police Chief] Timoney blames the trend on the proliferation of assault weapons on the streets. Whether people with homicidal tendencies seek out such firepower or the weapons trigger an aggressive response in those who hold them, Timoney said the constant factor is AK-47-style weapons ..." ... -------

"We do have less ownership per capita vs. the US (about 1/3) but ownership for much the same reasons. While the idea of some sort of totalitarian government take over seems highly unlikely in Canada, I'm sure many thought the same thing in a post WWI Germany. It is prudent to note here too, that almost every country that has enacted civil disarmament, has gone on to systematically 'cleanse' the portions of their populations most affected my the disarmament."
