Taking a lesson from the 1981 Sean Connery sci fi western Outland, which showed how dangerous it can be to mix guns with spaceflight, the Federal Aviation Administration wants to keep passengers from carrying firearms on rocket ships. Given the FAA's rules for air travel, that much is unsurprising. But while defending its space travel regulations in the December 15 Federal Register, the FAA casually and gratuitously endorsed the "collective right" interpretation of the Second Amendment, according to which the amendment poses no obstacle to gun control because it has nothing to do with an individual right to keep and bear arms, instead protecting states' prerogatives vis--vis their militias... |

Passage of this bill marks the first attempt by the General Assembly to clarify its intent in giving journalists access to the records. When it becomes law, the burden will be, as it has always been, on the media to honor the will of the General Assembly, and to prove they want the information only for the purposes they originally claimed (verifying training and background checks were being properly conducted), and not as a means of gaining access to foster a wholesale publishing of the list.

I GREW UP IN ANTI-GUN CANADA AND have almost zero experience handling firearms. But I've always been intrigued by the contradictions of sharpshooting: The watchlike precision of the gun and the shooter's mind, mixed with the macho violence of bullet play. I figure one month of intense training will turn me into a crack shot. |

Prosecutors in Genesee County will evaluate whether to file charges after a man was fatally shot while allegedly terrorizing a couple in their home. Police say a 51-year-old Sterling Heights man came to the Atlas Township home of his ex-wife last weekend. He reportedly sprayed the back of the home with bullets, threw a whiskey bottle through a window and broke into the home. The homeowner then fatally shot the man with an AK-47 assault rifle. The Genesee County Sheriff's Department says the 9-1-1 tape recorded the caller saying he was going to have to shoot the man firing shots at the house.A new law in Michigan allows homeowners to use deadly force in certain situations. |

Nebraska is about to usher in a new law that will allow people to carry concealed weapons but that doesn't mean you'll be able to carry those weapons everywhere. The first step toward getting legal is to fill out the paperwork and go through a training class but come January 3, it will be legal to carry a concealed weapon in Nebraska. There are a number of places where you won't be able to go while toting that weapon. |

"...With our unexampled advancement in all the elements of national greatness, the affection of the people is confirmed for the union of the States, and for the doctrines of popular liberty, which lie at the foundation of our government...."
"...but, at the same time, to be prepared to resist aggression and maintain all our just rights...."
"......It has never been our policy to maintain large standing armies in time of peace. They are contrary to the genius of our free institutions. . . and be dangerous to public liberty. Our reliance for protection and defence on the land must be mainly on our citizen soldiers, who will be ever ready, as they ever have been ready in times past, to rush with alacrity, at the call fence...."

"A rigid and close adherence to the terms of our political compact, and, above all, a sacred observance of the guarantees of the constitution . . . while personal liberty is placed beyond hazard or jeopardy. . . . leaving the private citizen in the full exercise of the high and ennobling attributes of his nature. . . . these are the great and important guarantees of the constitution, which the lovers of liberty must cherish . . . Preserving these, and avoiding all interpolations by forced construction, under the guise of an imagined expediency, upon the constitution, the influence of our political system is destined to be as actively and as beneficially felt on the distant shores of the Pacific, as it is now on those of the Atlantic ocean" |

Six days before Christmas, 6-year-old Donye Johnson was shot while standing in her living room in North Richmond. Any parent of a 6-year-old knows how excited he or she is about the holidays, anticipating presents and parties and watching "Frosty the Snowman" on TV. Instead of toys and treats, Donye got two bullets in her back. That is why I am starting a West Contra Costa Chapter of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. The California Brady chapters are working for a gun-violence-free California. |

[Excerpt]U.S. District Judge Denise Page Hood dismissed an indictment against James Thorpe in 2005 after the U.S. Attorney's Office refused to turn over records related to the Project Safe Neighborhoods program under which Thorpe was prosecuted. [...] The three-judge appeals court panel reinstated the indictment against Thorpe, charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.[/Excerpt]
Seems a tortuous path to prosecution of a felon. I wonder which part of 'shall not be infringed' is involved here. NRA apologists, do you know?
Either we are equal or we are not. Good people ought to be armed where they will, with wits and guns. |

Here's a nature friendly hunting gun. Instead of killing poor Bambi's mother, you can use this nifty camera gun from the folks at Leica. They've outfitted what appears to be a hunting rifle with a 400mm picture camera instead, so there's no deadly bullets coming out the other end. Just some crystal clear shots of Mother Nature at work. |
