The itinerary for legislators' spouses on their annual visit to the Capitol has always been a day of wine tastings, museum tours and the occasional fashion show.
But now that more women are winning seats in the House of Delegates, their husbands want a different kind of field trip. Something for the guys: an outing to the shooting range.
Ted Drake, of Norfolk, whose wife, Thelma, is serving her fifth term as a Republican delegate said, "I just thought it was time to have a little action." |

"The gun lobby would have us believe that a well-armed populace is the best defense against an oppressive government and nasty individuals in the streets... Isn't it strange then that there has been no comment at all, by anyone, that Afghanistan is the ultimate example of what happens when everyone has an arsenal to protect themselves against bandits and the "oppressive government"? Warlords. Total anarchy, where might is right. Danger at all times."
KABA NOTE: Isn't it even *stranger* that those people described are ALL CRIMINALS. Not ONE good citizen. |

Nebraskans should be allowed to join the pistol-packing public, according to Sen. Gene Tyson, whose concealed-handgun bill advanced out of the Judiciary Committee on Wednesday afternoon.
"I think we have some more support this year that we didn't have last year, and it's going to be interesting enough to try on the floor of the Legislature," said Tyson of Norfolk. The bill, LB496, advanced out of committee by a 5-2 vote. It is the latest concealed-carry proposal. |

Maryland House and Senate leaders want to stop a Maryland State Police crackdown on gun owners convicted of minor and, in some cases, long-past offenses.
"We need to concentrate our police power on drug dealers and current lawbreakers, and not look for work that's not adversely affecting our society," said Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr., a Democrat who represents Prince George's, Calvert and Anne Arundel counties. |

Recently three boys were expelled from Lake Oswego High School for shooting Air Soft BB guns at one another at swim practice.

Libertarian Carla Howell announced Tuesday that she plans to run for governor this year on a platform of massive tax cuts, a drastically reduced state budget and "100 percent gun freedom."

"But don't look for guns in a church, college parking lot or state park near you just yet. The bill is still going through a verbal shoot-out in the legislature. The concealed weapons bill is stuck in the Senate judiciary committee. Representative Knotts expects it to make it the floor for a full vote sometime this session."

Turnout has been light in the election to renew Southlake's crime control sales tax for 15 years.
The stakes are high for the Southlake Department of Public Safety, which handles police and fire functions in this fast-growing city.
The population in Southlake is expected to increase...during the next decade. The department is planning for two more stations to accommodate the growth, and funding for both stations would come from the sales tax.

-- A judge denies a bounty hunter a gun permit based on his bias to guns.
"People who want to carry weapons in New Jersey must show they are of good character, know how to use a firearm and have a justifiable need to carry one. Because the state does not have a law directly addressing the rights of bail enforcement officers to carry weapons, the judge applied existing gun laws to deny Borinsky." |

A bill that would have "allowed" public school children to defend themselves against bullies who start fights with them died in the House Education Committee yesterday.
Del. Bradley P. Marrs, R-Chesterfield, cited an incident where an honor student at James River High School was suspended after another student attacked him last year. The honor student was trying to defend himself, he said.
"We punished that student for doing nothing wrong," Marrs said.
KABA NOTE: It is a HUMAN RIGHT to defend yourself against any aggressor. No school "allowance" is needed for that. |

Dear Fellow Gun Owners,
I was visiting my local gun range in Texas and I noticed a letter near the register from the BATF. It was a "ruling" from a few years back that was reclassifying certain shotguns, such as the Striker 12, as a Class 3 item which would now require permission to own from your local law enforcement authority, fingerprints, photographs, background checks, and, Hitler's favorite: REGISTRATION. |

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said yesterday that in times of national tension, the country should not compromise constitutional values in the name of homeland security.
"If we gave up our freedom as the price of security," she said, "we would no longer be the great nation that we are."
In a rare, televised appearance with high school students, Ginsburg addressed issues of the day, why she became a lawyer, and customs at the court. |

People in Greater Lawrence who apply for a handgun license for the first time now need a letter from their doctor stating they are medically and psychologically fit.
To police, this is one more tool to help them decide who should be permitted to carry a gun. But to gun owner advocates, it is one more step designed to make it "virtually impossible" for people to obtain a permit to own and carry a handgun. |

A Superior Court Judge refused to follow 130 years of precedent and denied a gun permit for a Fugitive Recovery Agent. The Judge said the agent had no right to arrest bail jumpers and therefore no "justifiable need" for a gun. The potential impact of the decision is enormous; it opens the floodgates for civil suits and criminal defense motions to be brought by fugitives. |

Attorney General Roy Cooper is visiting schools across the state in hopes of reforming the way they react within the first 20 minutes of a shooting or "any other crisis."
The video is of a dramatized school shooting, like the 1999 shooting spree at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., that left 13 people dead and 21 injured. "We live with that fear every day. You look at that video and you can see it happening at this school."
KABA NOTE: Do they also live in fear of fatal car accidents, which happen *every single day* in every state of the country, as opposed to the rare incidents portrayed on the video? |
